I've been away for a while and just found that the old Battletech forums are closed and everything has moved here. This is brutal. We can't even set our own avatars - whats up with that??

Is there an officially unofficial forum alternative?

I think most people have settled in nicely, there is a discord channel but I'll have to look it up for you if no one else posts it as I don't get on it very often.

I agree that the Avatar selection is complete ass, but I believe one of our HBS staff mentioned that the selection would be expanded upon after a time. More than likely we will see an expanded selection with the source being from the actual PC game, but it might spoil some hints if handed off to us too soon before the game release.

I think Dagger said there’d be something like 30 avatars on day one and they’d try to add more later, but i havent heard anything about that since the switch happened. I think they’re too busy testing and polishing for release... probably a better use of time.

Welcome over.
Yes, the selection of avatars is limited, if you go into your backer kit there will be a PDX forum code which will unlock the BT avatars.
A lot of mechwarriors suffer TDS on arrival, but it passes, at least this forum isn't on the verge of collapsing.

What i dont understand is why on earth HBS chose to move from their previous site which beautifully married Battletech, Form, and Function, to this site which looks like a highschool kid set it up with InvisionFree forum software in an afternoon.

The previous forum had a lot of functionality issues (both on the back end and for the user). Forum staff was missing key tools, normal features for users like spoiler tags weren't possible, and all those issues (and many more that weren't stated) were starting to get worse and was compounding itself once the community became larger and larger. With the game launched, the old forum with the additional traffic, lack of tools, forum bugs, and limited staff would have resulted in some rather big issues. Unfortunately, the old forum was not up to the task.

That is why I'm glad Paradox has invited the community onto their forum.

The previous forum was on shaky ground in technical terms, amongst other problems. It wasn't built to handle an influx of new users like we'd see at launch ("would have crumpled like a locust hit by an AC20" I believe was the phrase used by one mod).

And while nice looking and iconic, I'm not so sure about the old forum having married "Function" into the equation anyway: it was terrible on mobile for me, slow and glitched out fairly often. This one has a much more robust set of features (for example, "Following" the Devs to where I can see what they "Agree" with gives a nice peek behind the curtain).

Yeah I mean the old forum one day randomly forgot about half of the devs' posts. I'd regularly be confused what page I was on of a thread because I'd scroll down to the end of a page on the forum and click page 2, then once on page 2 the page listed at the bottom would say 2 but at the top it would still say 1. There were weird bugs in that forum code. Not to mention the repeated attacks by spammers that had to be cleaned up by our volunteer moderators. Paradox's forum is a bit more refined and reliable.

No kidding. This is the Standard Big Forum Software style.

Yeah, it helps I was already used to it. But it wasn't from here. I've been posting on this forum style for 15 years give or take. No need to reinvent the wheel, and I found the HBS one clunky at best. Being here means they don't need to worry about updating it and keeping it up to snuff, and that leaves more man hours for working on the game!

Overall I think that Paradox has the best forums, but I'm not used to having things like custom avatars or signatures you can have images in. I appreciate that there must be a huge culture shock for those who've grown accustomed to that kind of thing.

True, that was nice. Too bad it'd broken for me and only showed one topic only.

Sigh.
Forum is "quirky", but not "buggy", like a late SW 'Mech after a few too many battles. Click the tab at the bottom, in the center, which says "Forum Options", then choose the button on the right marked "Set Options". That will display an older forum that's been marked as inactive. Unfortunately, every time you go to another screen in that sub-forum, or back to the first screen, you'll have to go through that same procedure. Not intuitive, but at least it works.
