I have recently started playing this game more and more. My initial game as France was hard with darn England and Burgundy against me. then I started to see nations blobbing in central and eastern Europe and I was like, oh great. Then a strange thing happened on the way to the Forum, the blobs died!

The overextended (great feature) blob nations collapsed and reverted to their original size. This took years but was a great thing to see. The have been some epic see-saw battles in Europe due to this. Good game scripting PDX!

Really?
I have yet to see countries collapse due to overextension.
Some AI countries to coalitions, yes (though even there, very rarely).
But never due to overextension.

It happens, just not often, and usually requires a Peasant's War or Desire for Liberty. In my last game, France collapsed into equal parts Auvergne, Guyenne and France.

I had something similar happen with Lithuania. They lost all but 4 provines to Polotsk and Ukraine. I magnanimously restored all their provinces to them, and then to me.

I kind of prefer blobs. Makes the late game interesting. Back in EUIII you were constantly fighting fractured nations. Russia never formed, Burgundy always split France, Spain never formed, etc etc. Now you have powers like the Ottomans holding their ground and expanding in Egypt and massive colonial empires. Paradox has truly created their best game with this one.

I agree with Kuroiya88. Most of my memories in EUIII include all the supposed great powers being weak and the game lacking challenge after the first 100 years due to your nation having blobbed, but the AI having stagnated. With the changes in EUIV it's good to see players have challenges... and for a mediocre player such as me I still am not the dominant power in my games. That honour usually goes for AI led Spain or France! :)
