Hey folks,

I've started a Mutapa game lately and it's been pretty fun - I've managed to devour all the muslim states on the east coast of Africa all the way up to Ethiopia. I beat Ethiopia in a war, but couldn't force-vassalize them in one go so I took 3 provinces to prepare them for a later meal. In the meantime I actually reached Admin lvl 4 and ideas - went for exploration to maybe reach some western country with a colony and get the chance to westernize. I got distracted, left Ethiopia to its devices and went to start colonizing down south towards Cape of Good Hope. It was absorbing quite a bit of my manpower as I wanted to preserve the locals, but their uprisings put a real dent in my army capability at sub-saharan tech group african units... All this time I'm periodically getting nationalist revolts from this or that nation - even though I've got all those cultures along the coast as accepted in my country. At one point yesterday I get a holler from Ethiopia - they declared war citing reconquest. I was thinking - hey, np, just drown them in mercs, right? Well, when I wasn't looking they allied with a blobbing Najd.
And that's when I got completely steamrolled. Muslim tech group vs Sub-saharan tech group isn't even a contest.

So, I was wondering - what should I do? Should I reroll and take a different approach, hope for a different situation in Arabia? Or is this something that's supposed to eventually happen, take the losses up north and scramble to westernize ASAP?
I'm leading a PU with Benin, but they don't give me colonizing range and I can't get fleet basing rights from them when they're PU, so no range to get a colony in America. Spain and Portugal won't give me fleet rights at -1000 colonial power malus, Mali is rivaling me and won't give me that either - that's like the only folks that could give me range... How do I westernize from this position?
I was also trying to get religious zealots to spawn so I can utilize them to change to Sunni, but they just refuse to spawn (8,34% revolt risk for conversion at 0,1% rate). Is there any other way for Animist to change religion?

Do the same thing any large country does vs overpowering tech groups. Scorched earth and 2 merc regiments assaulting the castle the moment they move a large stack off it. As long as you have a big stack in the region the AI doesn't like to spread out much.

If you're going to lose a merc, just delete it first. The attrition and inability to actually hold onto any provinces will eventually make them give up. I was able to do this with a blobbed out Assam against *both* Portugal and England dropping 3 stacks of 30 on my shores (literally 90 regiments held off via stalling and attrition)...heck with najd/ethiopia you might even get land if it goes well enough.
