I got the game yesterday and after a few hours I am already hooked. I bought the After Dark and Mass Transit dlc before the sales end and now I wondering what are the most importants mods you can get on steam. I know a lot of them depend of your personnal taste, but do you guys think they are a few must have mods out there?

P.S. I saw a guy play on the paradox twitch yesterday on steam and he was building some old school train station as his city center. It's a long shot, but does anyone know where it come from? I haven't seen it on the wiki so I guess it's a mod.

For me, I choose mods that make it easier to manage my city, not ones that change the underlying way the game works. I've got mods to give me more info about cargo stations, improved city info on the bottom of the screen, to tell me what's loading as my city loads, which assets I have that have too many triangles, how my city is approaching the game's hard-set limits, and extended building info.

But the one that lets me turn off fires is a true must-have. I do not want to create beautiful, wooded parks, only to have them burn down every two weeks.

I also consider the FPS mod a must-have, as it lets me get positioned down on street level for taking tourist pictures of my cities.

I very much enjoy the mod that lets me change LUT corrections and other lighting details. Again, for photography.

I also use a mod that helps to properly report when a unique building is placed or not. Sometimes, workshop assets will have a glitch in that departments.

Did you try the Move it! mod? It's seem like one of the most useful feature (it kind of strange that you can't turn buildings in the base game).

For mods like Move It!, Traffic President, Parkify, Anarchy, Metro Overhaul, I choose not to work with them, as they're more likely to break with the release of DLC or a patch. Yes, they often get fixed soon afterward, but there's also the risk one gets abandoned over time and then I'm stuck with a city that won't load properly because it relies on one of those mods. They can also produce unexpected effects in combination with other elements, so that adds to the risk of a game crashing or failing to load.

It's my own personal risk analysis and maybe I'm being overly conservative, but I have plenty of fun playing the way I play, so it's the right choice for me.

Highly recommended: Move It!
It lets you perform small tweaks to thing's positioning to help you make things look right. You may not think this is a big deal but once you get into the game, its something you'll use a lot.

Absolutely necessary: Lifecycle Rebalance
There is one aspect of the game that doesn't function right. That being cim lifecycle. It leads to what is commonly referred to as Death Waves. Death Waves are exactly what they sound like. You get massive waves of cims dying in a short period of time. People will tell you to build your zones in certain ways, dance around the totem pole 3 times and sacrifice to goat to fix it but you can tell my opinion of their effectiveness by my sarcastic examples. However the Lifecycle Rebalance mod fixes it. Yes, fixes it, period, end statement. No constant monitoring or other crap. It doesn't have an effect on the way the game plays in any other way.

Ploppable RICO & Metro Overhaul Mod. i wouldn't recommend them, both are unstable and frequently break saves after patches. but it's your choice

I very highly recommend avoiding the workshop until you learn the game better, then you'll know what you want out of the game.

Randomly adding mods can have several side effects. Most importantly learning new game rules you don't need to learn by adding unnecessary abilities to the game. and worse, on patch day, they have a high chance of not only breaking your saved game from working at all until patched, it can have issues like disappearing roads, and your city not functioning properly.

Good learning tools are the scenarios. Mass-Transit has some good ones. Especially traffic ones, as this game has lots of traffic that needs fixing a lot.

But some of those mods are a mini game in themselves and can take a while to master and setup properly.

True. Don't use a mod that fixes something unless you've played enough to be frustrated by the problem the mod claims to fix.

For example, don't turn off fires in your game until after you've built a city where fire issues are driving you up the wall (Trees! Park areas!).

I didn't go with Metro Overhaul, instead I found assets that allow me to do metros the way I like without much risk of them being broken by a patch or DLC.

I will continue my first city until I got a bit a experience with everything and only then try a few mods. I had Lifecycle Rebalance and Move it! to my favorite on steam for later. I think I'll had the Recycling Center too since I don't have green cities yet and it look really useful, but that will be mostly it. I wont had too much mods to make every problems trivial, it wil kill the fun.

Thank you everyone for your answers.
