I don't see why different religions shouldnt marry, as it was generally considered political rather than religious when considering most heads of state, although there should be a low chance of it happening, like a -50 score or something for being heratics.

Well, just because it was a political affair doesn't mean it wasn't religious. I can't think of one single example where a Christian monarchy would arrange and go through with a political marriage with a Muslim enitity.

That's reason enough why no change is needed in this case, imo. Instead, change the whole dynasty system into a very simplified version of the CK2 system, where there are actually persons marrying eachother, and succession and heirs are represented in a logical way.

It did happen though there were some frequent minor marriages with merchant state leaders and mamluks or ottomans in the hope it would secure better trading rights

But I was talking about monarchies, since Royal Marriage is for monarchy government types.

Point is, since this wasn't practiced in history, I see no reason why the barrier should be removed.

The most notable would be the marital connections between Ak Koyunlu, Kara Koyunlu, Candar, and Karaman with Trebizond and Georgia, with the founder of Safavid Persia (Ismail I) actually being the great-grandson of both Alexios IV and John IV of Trebizond as well as Alexander I of Georgia. The Caucasian states may be a little different than most situationally, but it did happen.

Merchant states including the monarchies of Naples and Aragon? Not just republics.
Yes, but did members of the Trastámara dynasty marry women from the Islamic countries?

I'll admit that I'm being a little Eurocentric here, since the majority and most important of the Christian nations are situated in Catholic Europe and a change like this would have impact there.

But sure, since the Caucasus region (where the Christians were mostly vassals to the muslims during the time frame of the game) is the great exception to the rule, I could go with making it eligible for Orthodox and Coptic rulers to arrange marriages with Muslims. That would be the best and easiest way to represent this in the game. But for non-subject members of Western Christianity, no.

I'm thinking legitimacy/prestige hit.

There should be some kind of minor side effect; Muslims -> lower piety, Catholics -> lower papal influence, Reformed -> less fervor
I think that is too easy to manipulate, giving a hard relationship malus makes more sense, one thats difficult to overcome, maybe even up to -75 making it extremely unlikely, a better thing to do aswell if you ask me is to not give it a direct hit but make it so its likely there is a string of events to take various penalties like opinions with neighbours, lose legitimacy ect.

I don't see why any of these are mutually exclusive. Throw in more maluses and side effects! That would keep the player form abusing it and we could give a low chance for the AI to try.

Orthodox and Coptic Christians definitely should have the option of making royal marriages with Muslim rulers, they did do so fairly frequently. Really it comes down to a distance issue. Christian rulers that neighbored Muslim realms engaged in royal marriages with them, Christian rulers who did not have Muslim neighbors did not.
