It of course depends GREATLY on the band. Most of the medieval bands out there play 16th century madrigals, bu there are some with gems. German Poeta Magica and to a lesser extent Wolgemut are fairly well-known good examples, though they also mix originals and later compositions for more variety.

Medieval Music:

try Hildegard von Bingen, Guido d'Arezzo,
- try the performmers from Hysperion XX and Hysperion XXI, Tom Koopman.

In the Historic Archive in which I'm doing voluntary work, I've found some parchements from the 11th and 12th century, that bounded books from 14th and 15th centuries, had musical signs - those are called Antifonários.

there is only one CK being released, which is by paradox entertainment. all the things snowball guys were saying was gonna be in the game, is still in the game. there is no snowball version that is more role play elements than paradox version. johan has said all that stuff and more is in CK.

Well, there is a Snowball version, as in (from what I understand) now they're producing their own game seperately from Paradox, with a different title, based in the same time period. So you're right, there will only be one CK, but there will be two games in that time period.

I maybe in the minority, but I hate it. It doesn't remind me of the period at all, and the sound seems made from a small scale. But I can atleast hope the sample is but a small portion of the overall work...

Actually from the beginning, I was hoping there would be different music for some of the different cultures. Whether that was ever planned I don't know, but to me it would seem more appropriate, and appealing.

I've loved the music for EUII HoI and Victoria.... so I really have no reason to doubt... but sometimes doubting is the order of the day, is it not?

I must say I agree with you. From what I've heard so far, I'd prefer the music to be the way they did it before. That's why I was wondering if that music was for the paradox game or the snowball one. I mean it doesn't even sound 'right' for the era.

I'm pretty sure it's for the game being developed by Paradox - IIRC, Johan posted here a while ago about this music (though I can't seem to find it now). If Johan's talking about it, it's probably not something Snowball is doing independantly for their game. ;)

How can anyone say that little tune is good for this game? Not that we particularly know a lot about medieval music, but the game's music should be reflective of what we associate those times with. Basically, those times were hard and depressing. Depressing and mystical music would sound much better.

You know, it's a myth that the Dark Ages actually were dark...;) That was something one came up with during the renaissance or somewhere around that time(at least after the Dark Ages were over.:p).

With all the philo-medievalists haunting the CK boards, there is a tendency for revisionism to go a bit far. Pre-1050 life in Western Europe was pretty harsh. Post 1050 things improved, but it wasnt until the early 1300s (at least outside Italy) that signs of a sophisticated urbanized civilization began to develop. And then there was the successive waves of plague, which improved economic conditions for the peasantry in the long run, but at a horrifying cost.

One thing is true though, the Rennaissance was probably literally "colder"; with the Little Ice Age starting in earnest around the mid 1400s

The whole Dark Ages thing is about a lack of recorded history, in the Western world anyway. Historians are literally in the 'dark' about much of it, which is a useful way to explain the name!

But to me the instruments in that clip don't even sound medieval.

I think of chanting and troubadours and minstrels and harps.... much simplier music, but having a much more inward scope about it. To me thats what this game seems to be as much as anything... it's not so much global as EUII or HoI, rather a smaller more local scope.

Who knows though... that one song might be nothing like the rest, or perhaps my vision of the game is totally inaccurate, and the music really does fit the game like a glove. Only the beta testers and game developers would know for sure....
