as the title suggests, we just created a Multiplayer competitive game, not to really compete, but more to just build and have fun in the same map and city...

however, we can't destroy ANY city owned roads...it gives the warning 'You Cannot bulldoze objects owned by another company'. I tried to rationalize why this was like this, and could only come up with the idea to prevent players from destroying city owned roads used by their opponents to ruin their routes...however, that can still happen in a way, by destroying useful buildings that support an opponent's route. luckily we aren't trying to bankrupt each other, we actually want everyone to succeed in our game...but not being able to upgrade a normal road with 6 lanes to be a 4 lane road with 2 bus lanes, adding or removing sidewalks, adding or removing parking spaces....optimizing the traffic in an area with one-way roads...

there is a TON of stuff we can't do...at first we shrugged it off but it's actually really stifling some of our creativity.

is there ANY way around this? like, even hacky ways of destroying a road like placing an object on it first or...i dunno...anything really. we'll make due with what we have, but any advice here would be really appreciated!

When CO did this they didn't have in mind that multiplayer would be used this way, so its not possible to bulldoze other players infrastructure. A way around this would be to play as cooperative.

indeed, playing as co-operative seems to allow destruction of everything as is normal, and we will probably have to forgo the competitive play completely, until hopefully a solution for that is found...i realize either direction is not a great solution...either let people potentially troll the hell out of each other, or be unable to break anything at all. hopefully someone can think of a good third solution.

we unfortunately really love the idea of the competitive mode, too. not to actually play against each other, we just really love having our own distinct companies, colours, money pools, routes.

A third possibility would be a ruleset for competitive play that must be voted on unanimously. The default setting would be not able to destroy roads as it is now, but if EVERYBODY in the game agrees a ruleset could be set to allow for destroying roads.

Multiplayer has so much potential but was let down by the developer's lack of imagination. Instead of setting up a 'match' and playing to win or reach the objective, more sandbox gameplay should have been available. A simple voting system could have been used and players would be presented with a box with yes/no options to decide certain design decisions during gameplay. Players could also create their own custom votes with custom field as voting options but the outcome would be determined by those playing.

So as you mentioned, players could vote to turn a stretch of road (maybe selected by clicking?) into a 'city' road by starting a vote, 4 out of the 5 players playing say yes so this event takes place. I have no idea how a tie would work, maybe a GM or something could be created before starting play and would be responsible for deciding ties and would act at the city's mayor and would have the 'final say' of all decisions.

Custom votes would be for roleplaying, and players would simply vote on their choice and then the players would have to carry out the action.

Votes would contain certain fixed elements so the game knows what to do (just like when creating scenario missions,) the player would either select a premade vote option or create their own. So if you selected any player > join Framang Road > $5000 > month then any player connecting to Framang Road would receive $5000 a month in till the service was broken.

The players would see this as Any company connecting services to Framang Road will gain $5000 a month OR as a custom option.. The city major is offering a subsidy of $5000 a month to any company which connects to Framang Road.

So for example:
variables are in bold

Splott wants to make Voljor Road into a CITY road
YES [/] 3
NO [] 1

Splott wants to allow the use of road building (aka city creation)
YES [/] 1
NO [] 5

Splott will allow ohgr to use his subway line in return for $2000 a month
Accept [] (answerable only by the recipient)
Deny [/]

The city mayor/GM wants more services offering to the Grand Stadium and will grant $500 to any company which have such services running by February 2015

Pledge [/]
Ignore []

The city mayor wife gave birth to a beautiful baby at 13:05 today, mother and daughter are doing well. (Extreme example of roleplaying)

Send letter of congratulations []
Send $50 gift []
Ignore [/]
