Greetings everyone. I am thinking about installing a second copy of this game in a different location on my harddrive so I can try out the new beta patch while keeping my original "and heavily modded" install intact. When I try to do this, it only gives me an option to uninstall or repair.

Is there a way to get around this so it will let me install the game again to a different spot? I want to put the beta patch on a vanilla version and then mod it from there as needed.

Thanks

There is absolutely no copy protection on any of the files; I just copy/paste a new version from my clean 1.3 install every time a new beta rc comes out. That is what I would recommend. If you wanted to reinstall you could delete the HOI3 entry in your registry, if you are familiar with doing that. If not don't try you can ruin your entire system.

I use the Generic Mod Enabler, and it's great. It is a small program that allows you to load and unload 1.4 beta files, mods, etc. with a few clicks. The program always keeps a clean backup of the game, so that you can remove all mods at any time, and return to the fresh 1.3 game. In this way you only need to have one installation of the game. :)

Thanks for the replies guys. My problem is I dont have a clean install of HoI3 to copy. My only install is modded heavily, thats why I wanted to install a second copy. I figured if I simply copied the folder to a knew location it wouldnt launch since it wont have a registry entry pointing to it. That not being the case, I may try copying my modded game to another folder, then uninstall and reinstall the vanilla game to the original location. Will this work? I would rather not mess with the registry itself, since I have no experience doing that on windows 7, which is rather new to me.

I don't know for sure, but I am pretty sure you have to uninstall/reinstall. The install/uninstaller works off of the registry and copying the files doesn't change that, AFAIK.

Uninstall the program, then when you reinstall it make sure you keep a clean install that you can copy as many times as you want for your various modding/patching needs.

Would this work?

Make a copy of the game you now have installed. Name it something different. Uninstall the original, install a fresh. Rename your saved copy of your modded game.

Well, I tried to uninstall, and now my uninstaller crashes every time it tries to start:mad:. I think its related to the game being installed in the Program Files (x86) folder, which seems to hate having anything modified in it. I installed the game the day I got this new computer, so I wasnt aware what a load of crap it caused to install a game in that folder.

Looks like my only option is to delete the registry entry then delete the game folder manually. I did a search in regedit and found several entries for paradox interactive in different places, but dont know which ones need to be removed to fix this issue. Anyone had this problem before and know how to resolve it?

Unless you have other Paradox games installed deleting everything you find should be okay. As Kallocain said a dedicated uninstaller program wouldn't be a bad idea either.
As a tip, I'd suggest installing all your games from now on into a dedicated "games directory", I have no idea why developers still insist on putting program files as the default install location but there you go.
Cheers

Ok thanks for all the help everyone, I will download one of these uninstaller programs and give that a shot.

The reason I installed it in the ProgFiles x86 folder is because it was the first game I ever installed on a new computer that I bought the same day I got the game. I had no idea of the troubles that could arise on this new Win7 operating system. My last comp had winXP and it didnt mind at all having games in the ProgFiles directory. I now have a seperate folder in C drive that all games go in, and another folder for application programs.

Thanks again, now its time to try out 1.4!
