I know new galaxy types are a possibility in the future but one I would really like to see is two or more galaxies on the same map separated just enough to require jump drives or Quantum Catapult, to hop from one to the other. Not something you could do at the start of the game. Allowing the two galaxies to develop before confrontation occurs.
