Evening all,
I reccently managed to talk one of my friends into (eventually) picking up HOI on Steam. I'd love to set up a multiplayer game , but I have a few questions first:
1. Exactly how do I do this? All I know is that the official servers have been dead for years and that I'll probably have to use a third party client like Gameranger.
2. Do I need any special gear (headphones, mic, etc.)?
3. Will I need to mess with my internet settings (TCP/IP, proxy, ports, etc.)?
4. Does anyone have any good/fun ideas for a two-person mp game (we're booth kind of noobs)?
Please pardon my ignorance, but I've never played any kind of multiplayer before apart from Mount&Blade deathmatches, and I really could use all the help I can get.

Hey, I'm kind've new to the HOI3 Multiplayer but I use third party clients. I have tried so far Evolve, Hamachi, and GameRanger in order to play a multiplayer match. So far I've only got Hamachi to work, however I don't like using it or the poor security. You could use any outside chat sources that you want. All in all I suggest getting Podcast's HOI3 launcher. The ports are kind've a moot point for me. I suggest a British/French or British/US campaign for Allies, a German/Italian campaign for Axis, and a Soviet/Japan campaign for the Comintern. This however is just my experiences and is based on what I have witnessed.

I think there were some ports that had to be opened when I played lan with a friend of mine, I have a different router atm though so I can't remember. From a quick google I found 'Here you want to open ports ranging from 1630-1640 in both the UDP and TCP protocol. '

My advice, drive to each other's house and just lan next to each other on the same router. It's more stable and way more fun since you can talk face to face and see each other's builds/wars/etc. whilst waiting for things to do.

This thread in the Multiplayer subforum should answer lots of your technical questions (numbers 1 and 3).

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...ver-chat-and-practical-considerations.417188/

No you do not need any special gear, but a Microphone and a VOIP server/client (ie Teamspeak 3) would be good for you and your friend to communicate if you are not in the same room, but there is Ingame chatting system via text.

Other than that, when choosing two countries just do whatever sounds like fun! GER vs USSR is typically the matchup that matters the most, but you could do others like, REP Spain vs NAT Spain, or Italy vs UK, or Japan vs USA, or Japan vs China, etc. Or you could both be on the same team such as ITA and GER vs the WORLD. Have fun with your matchups.
