It's hosted by individuals (you can too if your computer and internet connection is good enough). Just load the game fresh (clearing cache on the load up icon) and click on the Refresh Internet on the multiplayer menu on startup. Just make sure you read some of the tips first else you'll get kicked, etc.

Yah, there will usually be some all welcome games you can join. As others have said the previous thread is a decent place to learn some of the pratfalls that could get you in trouble. There is also a dedicated MP subforum, which is usually pretty quiet, but could help you find an organized game if that’s more your style than a pickup game (you’ll need to register your game to your account if you haven’t already though)l.

Despite claiming to be a new and improved list, it is in fact quite outdated and filled with broken links to long deleted channels. I'm looking to update it so if you have any non-expiring links to a discord you want me to add, message me.

Remember, your reputation will follow you. The HoI4 MP community is small. If you play 10 games, you'll start to recognize the regulars in your timezone. Follow the rules, be polite, don't rage quit if your tanks are encircled.

https://www.reddit.com/r/hoi4/comments/ewa7rq/_/fgq0vi8

Really do want to emphasize the point about the community, you will know people by their voice pretty quickly. You'll find groups of people by time zone and by game preference, I know most of the EUW/USE Horst and HFD players at this point. You can easily tell a newer player by checking mutual friends/discords and seeing where you line up and your reputation absolutely matters. Don't be discouraged by one toxic player, you will find a group of friendly people if you maintain a friendly facade yourself (ruthlessly crush them if they're on the other team ofc) and you will know which side to play in games to get a better experience.

------

All should not expire as of 2020-06-21. There may be duplicates, I copy pasted 100 something links and I'm bound to have messed up somewhere.

Disclaimer: all these server ratings are arbitrary and just based on a glance at the rules, channel setup, and who I recognize of the players on the server.

Serious - Almost exclusively historical using mods, extensive rules and many channels

Good - Generally historical, solid setup of channels and rules

Casual - Semi-historical/meme game oriented

Minimal - Anyone can create 3 voice chats and a barebones ruleset

I'll add one thing: be aware of the fact many open games have severely curtailed game mechanics - e.g. no strat bombing, focus trees from mods are cut down to historical paths, template changes are "XP free" etc. In other words, they all play within a very narrow meta range, and you need to know that meta - watch a few twitch guys to see what they're up to and what the current meta is - e.g.
- Italy doesn't join the war against France so the Allies can't do an early rush in Africa giving the Germans time to move their tanks down before the battle for North Africa takes place
- Build port and airfields in specific strategic locations (e.g. port mountains in Egypt, airfields in the east of India, etc)
- Nations have very specific requirement that you'll need to be able to do - e.g. Australia and Brazil will need to put out a large number of marines, you need to know how to do that

This isn't necessarily an optimised version of the game, it's just the meta that's settled on for balance - else Germany just builds a ton of sub 4s and destroys the UK, and the USA just builds a ton of strat bombers and destroys Germany. The flip side is that after a few of these games, you get into pretty boring rinse/repeats and changing the meta takes a lot of effort and willingness from your partners to try it out, which they won't do until you've proved yourself. It doesn't mean it's not fun, it just means you need to go in with your eyes wide open. Meme / nonhistorical games tend, IMHO, to be a lot more fun and have a greater diversity of people.

Stale meta is BS, play more games and you'll experience a ton of different players/mods/rulesets.

Just looking at Axis in vanilla you can see the range of options. You have to have the early conversations on what each team member is doing. I'd say vanilla meta is: Germany - MT, inf, fighters; Hungary - AC, TACs or fighters; Romania - fuel refining, marines, arty 3; Bulgaria - mech2/amtrac2 rush, tanks for Ostfront; Italy - inf, coastal defense, rush fighter 2; Spain - HTs, mech/amtrak, tungsten, take Portugal and send vols.

But that can vary quite a bit. Bulgaria gets the same 10% air superiority high command as Hungary and so does Romania. Romania can get fighter 2 earlier but doesn't have a second bonus. Italy and Hungary can get fighter 3 faster, Germany is going to have to license produce and hard research regardless. Italy can also choose to go naval bombers, Hungary could build CAS, Bulgaria could be AC and making TACs. Germany can also air control for himself and that makes the ground support expert even stronger but with more micro required for Germany. Spain has a 15% air superiority expert but that would require rules on him joining the war early.

Then look at the land meta. Bulgaria has cav and inf leaders, he can go mass mob 6-5 cav-inf divisions which get buffs from cav/inf high command and both sets of leader traits. These are exactly 20 width and make great coastal garrisons; Bulgaria produces mech and Germany lend-leases guns. Bulgaria can also go Grand Battleplan left and take German expeditionary force tanks to stack planning bonus. Romania can go mountaineers instead of marines and can go AT if Russia/Allies do mediums. Depending on who rushes fighter 2, Romania can clear his debuffs and have a decent eco at the cost of Italy taking Yugo later. Hungary can specialize in SPGs (though SPGs are trash) or mech/amtrac or heavy tanks. He can have 4 mech heavies for Barb if he builds his economy correctly and doesn't have to air control. Germany can go heavies or mediums, surface or sub raiding, air or no air, mech or amtracs, arty or no arty, and there's a ton of ways to make the focus tree work (as long as 4 year plan is 4th, you're good to go). Italy can go fighter heavy or land heavy, has 4x100% armor research, and a bunch of research for arty. That can rush arty/RA/AA tech and get way ahead of time, I've even seen 8-7 inf-AT from Twix Italy to counter South Af heavies. Italy also has a variety of naval builds and can make naval bombers. Spain can go mediums if Germany goes heavies or could choose a type of special forces to specialize in. Depending on rules about joining the Axis, they can make an impact in Africa or on the Ostfront.

This is just the Axis in a total vacuum. When you start to respond to what Japan/UK/Russia/USA are doing, there's a massive array of possibilities.

This is exactly what people mean when they complain about the meta in high rules games being narrow/stale. A lot of the acceptable variations you mention are still pretty rigid, and I think that some of them are more generous than a lot of servers/team leaders even allow for.

Like just switching out which Axis minor is stuck on air control or what precise month Italy takes out Yugoslavia isn’t really that different.

Thank you. I didn't want to offend, but the variations @28lobster mentioned are very narrow indeed - who's going to rush fighters 2, and is Germany going to do 40 width unpierceable medium or unpierceable heavies isn't exactly stuff that keeps me coming back for more tbh.

Also, all the who's going to rush what is totally and utterly irrelevant. The fact is that no-one ever helps France defend (else there is no game), so it always falls. And then all that matters is what tech people have late 41, early 42, and then they're always the same techs: huge soft attack marines for allies, etc. Yawn.

The worst part is that if you do anything that might break the meta (e.g. "space marines" because you notice Germany has no AA on its divisions and Romania has gone mass mob so has tons of utterly rubbish infantry, so you could just destroy their infantry with the tiniest of armour), most people will lose their rags and go on a massive rant. It's funny. Once. Then you realise you'd rather play a meme game.
