I have several times made attempts with my friend to play Iron Cross in multiplayer, we have been able to do this with many other games, including AoD and HoI2.
We have attempted to play through IP, but encountered the mysterious problems of the client not being able to get past the waiting for other players white text to the left, at the same time the client is not able to see the host talking, while the host can see the client talking. The waiting for other players issue makes it entirely impossible to play the game in multiplayer, one of us has no router or firewall to speak of that could cause issues, while the other has opened the correct ports for HOI2 on his router (whether we need more ports in Iron Cross or not we have no idea, but we assume we don't). Both of us have tried hosting, leading to the the same results.
We have also tried Gameranger, but GR seems to have issues with any differences from the ordinary exe for each new game (they don't really support Iron Cross, but they support AoD and therefore recognize the exe and load it properly). GR does not give us communication issues at all, and is letting us bypass the waiting for other players bug, however it always aborts the game as soon as it is saved (for him, not for me, I can save). We have tried this many times.
EDIT: GR also aborts when you upload a savegame.
