Strange crash ... help?

Whenever I click Multiplayer/Internet, the game freezes and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete back to the desktop. I can play LAN games fine ... it just locks cold when I try to even goto Internet.

I'm running the lastest version (1.10), Windows 98, well above the minimun requirements, and no firewall. Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

This crash occurs when I click on the "Internet" button in the multiplay menu. I click and my mouse freezes, I wait and nothing happens. The computer then needs to be restarted. I have no firewall, use 1.10 patch, have re-installed EU, and am using latest IGC if it matters. What can I do to play a multiplayer game. I click the LAN button and it works fine but I cant play internet games. Help.

check the running problems thread on top of the forum, some suggestions can be useful.

btw, is it a coincidence that you both have the same ISP and similar IPs? :)

Thanks for your replies.

We are truly different people but my friend was having the problem and since no one responded I decided to post a similar message in the support forum.

I'll see if it helps.

that's what I thought.

Well, I don't have any idea on what is going wrong with you two :(

Now you are on DSL, so it could be a network card problem, however, you said LAN is ok...

Do you have more than one network card? If so, try to disable the one that isn't used to go on the internet. If you use a router/hub, try a direct connection to the net. It could be the router or its config in the internet...

Can you list me all the protocols you have installed on your network?

You should really try EU2 btw. It's much better than #1 and MP will be working fine with patch 1.05 (the next one).

Actually, I have not yet tried running ScanDisk and Defrag. I don't see a great chance of them working, but I suppose it's worth a shot.

EDIT:

I do use two network cards. One connects me to my DSL modem, the other one runs to my 2nd computer, so I can share my interent connection (I use Windows Internet Connection Sharing).

Let's call my DSL card DSLCard, and my other card LANCard. My protocol setup is as follows:

DSLCard: Internet Connection Sharing, NetBEUI, TCP/IP
LANCard: same

I don't seem to have any problems with sharing my connection or trasfering files over my LAN, nor do I notice any problems with my main internet connection.

Before we all rack our brains over this too much though, I'll do a defrag and such. :)

You do not need NetBEui on your DSLcard, but it shouldn't affect your gameplay (but it's a security risk).

Here is something you can try:
go to the System applet in the control panel, right click on your LAN card an check the box "Disable in this hardware profile" and check if you can play the game over the internet, if it works, you've got a conflict with your two network cards.

If it doesn't work, try changing the card functions, i.e. DSLcard becomes LANcard and vice-versa. To do this, simply change the cables.

Now, try your LAN, internet connection and the game. If the game now works fine, it means you have a problem with your DSLcard (the first one). In this case, either you change it, or your replace it with a hub; with a hub you'll be able to connect your two computers (or more) to the DSL modem.

one more question: do you both have the same problem? In other words, do you get the crash/freeze no matter who is the host?

so, what did you do to get it to work?

About the crash: I do not know... Try the latest drivers for your LAN cards, try uninstalling and reinstalling the game, etc.

I'm not sure why it worked ... I defragged (I was pretty fragmented ... 5% maybe), and ran ScanDisk, and it worked. Whether what I did actually helped, I dunno ...

I'll try your suggestions for the crash problem, although I've already done a few reinstalls for various things and they never seem to help.

The most common cause for MP crashes is the Chat function, so avoid that if possible until the next patch at least.
