One thing I've not seen much of in many other city building games is something that I see everyday, certainly in Europe

Buildings that have shops on the ground floor and apartments or offices on the floors above Which, in simcity terms, gives duel residential/commercial properties.

Also in that picture is the triangular building shaped to fit the old rambling street layout of older cities.

And speaking of older cities

Streets not big enough for cars for that Claustrophobic feel

Or indeed streets that are a bit wider where one side is for driving and the other for parking (so essentially one way).

Very good ideas. Unfortunately, all of this seems to be out.

They said in the stream that they had last week that they made a design choice to exclude mixed-use buildings. It will probably be included to some extent as a visual representation. For example residential buildings with stores visible on the ground floors but with no commercial value in the game.

To build European cities they will have to include wall-to-wall buidlings. And they also seem to be out, at least at release. Hopefully they will be added later on.

Yeah, the goal or focus of the game is to build a new modern european suburbia style city. So all detached buildings, strict segregated zones, car-focused transport.

They ruled out mixed-use buildings/zones in the stream already. It seems to be difficult to simulate.

My idea to facilitate mixed zones is to create a special zone where residential and commercial buildings are built alternatively that are 'anchored' to each other by some mixed-zone tag only those buildings have as a property specified. Thus, technically, these zones would feature similiar-looking residential and commercial buildings that wouldn't appear on residential- or commercial-only zones.

Still, you can zone residential and commercial alternatively to get the mix, but it's not quite what a genuine mixed zone would give you.

The point is that old city centres do not make sense if you're making a city now. You can't have coal power & narrow streets.
Maybe in the future they will make a Cities: Medieval and then you can export the city you made there to Cities: Skylines.

The point is that old city centres do not make sense if you're making a city now. You can't have coal power & narrow streets.
Maybe in the future they will make a Cities: Medieval and then you can export the city you made there to Cities: Skylines.

I live on the edge of El Born in Barcelona and the buildings aren't quite medieval :) but I admit the newer buildings are built following an older street plan.
