When I formed Mughals as Timurids it gave me claims on the whole subcontinent. If I remember correctly, forming Russia did something similar for European Russia.

Are we expected to actually use these claims? I feel like the twenty five years in which claims are valid typically don't allow that much conquest. In the case of my Mughals, I'd racked up a bunch of AE annexing Delhi, so I spent most of the twenty-five years after formation getting the Indians out of their coalition. I was able to nab, like, four provinces with those claims before they expired.

It's a relic of when those decisions used to give cores (in EU3), and I, at least, have said that the claims for forming nations should be extended beyond normal claim time, due to the large area covered by some of them.

Even with those claims the window you have to use them is incredibly small, and if you did somehow manage to take all the lands you had claims on in that window you're probably in for a world of trouble with rebellions.

Nation forming claims are a nice minor benefit at best, useless at worst as it stands right now.

Yeah, I had the same problems forming Qing and getting claims on China.

"I have captured the northern capital, and declared myself Emperor of China! All the lands of the Middle Kingdom are mine by rights! Well, so long as I conquer them within the next few decades. After that I guess I'll just forget about it."

Mughal claims had a weird effect that they never expired if you didn't quit and reload the game, not sure if that's still true.

However, they are still useful, especially if there's a big empire with most of them, because claims don't expire when you have a truce with the holder of the territory. That lets you repeatedly bite off chunks of claimed land. It also allows you to, for instance, pick off a vulnerable Ceylon that you'd normally not be able to get claims on, et cetera.

They do expire the day the truce ends, however, so you'll have to either truce-break, or subvert the truce by causing a defensive CTA on said empire.

Unless something changed recently, they expire at the end of the month when the truce ends. I've played Mughals more than enough to be certain of that.
