Mughal- AAR

Well, this will be my first AAR, so please bear with me.

The Settings are:

IGC. 2.3.
Free Bretagne, Free Norway, Super Hansa, T.O. Ingmerland, Unified Prussia.

Difficulty: hard, Agressiveness: wild

Three times in the game I will cheat: I will give myself an explorer and a conquistador in 1492, 1592 and 1692.

Also, I will try to smash Persia and maybe annex some asian and Arabian countries, but steer clear off the Europeans and Turkish, if possible. This way, I can build my own empire that will be able to defend, but the Europeans can pretty much do whatever they want. (Except for colonizing India, that is ;))

So, in short, I don´t want to conquer the world, but use my good leaders I have in the beginning to conquer and empire and then consolidate it for the rest of the game.

I will write about what is going on in the world as much as about my own country. I am simply assuming that, even though I don´t know the exact location of the rest of the world, traders, etc. will tell me those things.

Part1: News and preparations

It was a wonderful January day in Delhi, as Babur the magnificent sat in his Throneroom.
“Well,”, he said ,” I am young, impulsive and quite a stud. In other words, I want to wage war!”.
Words and actions are one in Mughal society, so off he went and moved his troops to the border with Hyderabad, being certain that his superior troops would easily defeat Hyderabad, enlarging the empire.
Also, 6 settlers were sent forth to several Indian provinces and the conquistador set off to the east do discover new lands, and the explorer sailed southwest. Also, some loyal followers are promoted.

Feb. 1. 1492- Traders tell of Rebellions in the Inkaempire province Cajamarca.

Emperor Babur: Huh?

Feb. 20. 1492- Russia declares War on Kazan

A minister enters the throne room.

“Your majesty, I bring you grave news. All settlers but the one sent to Kutch failed. This means, we don´t expand and 600 Mughal civilians are dead.”
Emperor:” Ah, don´t worry…”

And, among much cheering, the minister is boiled alive, and then quartered and beheaded.

3. 1. 1492 Treaty of Tordesillas
4. 12. 1492 Our conquistador discovered Patna and something called Asia
5. 16. 1492 Turkey declares war on the Mamelucks

Somewhere, in central India, in the camp of the main body of the Mughal army. The emperor is sitting together with his advisors, talking about the news of some heathens thinking the world would be their backyard and the Turkish declarance of war.
Emperor:” You know what?”
Advisor:” What?”
Emperor: “Hey, we can do that, too, let´s declare war on Hyderabad!”
All advisors in unisono:” Emperor Babur has the best of all ideas”

5. 21. 1492- The Mughal empire declares war on Hyderabad.

Chapter 2: This is harder then I thought or Why do they all hate us?

An impressive army of 59.000 soldiers moves off towards Nagpur, singing songs as they are looking forward to smash the army of Hyderabad. Emperor Babur, the conqueror, as he now calls himself sits on a hill, overlooking the vast army, and starts to weep as the thought comes to his mind, that all these wonderful men will be dead in a hundred years.

6. 16. 1492- The main Mughal Army of 59.000 reaches Nagpur and battles the defending army of 40.000
6. 24 1492- As the battle of Nagpur still rages, the Mughal conquistador discovers Santal, meaning that the Mughal are the first humans to discover India

Emperor Babur is quoted upon hearing these news thusly: “Wow!”. It is hard to tell, because at this time he was rallying his troops as they were facing desaster.
As it turned out, Babur may be a stud, young, attractive and impulsive, but not quite the military leader he thought he were because.

6.26. 1492 and 6.29. 1492- While the second Mughal army starts a siege on Mady Pradesh, Babur and his army, which in it´s majority, didn´t need a hundred years to die, retreat to Aurangabad.
8.5. 1492- The Battle of Aurangabad. In the next days, the Mughal army fights Hyderabad, as Babur is being told these other news:
8.6. 1492- Austria and it´s allies declares war on Venice and it´s allies
8.7. 1492- If the Mughals weren’t fighting for their lives, they would mourn that Kazan was annexed by Russia.
8.9. 1492- France and it’s allies declare war on England and it’s allies.
8.19. 1492- After two weeks of fighting, the battle of Aurangabad is lost.

As the meagre rest of the Mughal army retreats from the field of battle and the army from Hyderabad starts laying siege on Aurangabad, the war council of the Mughal meets.

Emperor Babur: “Gentlemen, in spite of my brilliant planning and capable leadership, you morons have not done your part. Thus, you will all now be beheaded.”

On the next day, Emperor Babur sits together with his “new and improved war council ™” in order to discuss the matters of war.

Emperor Babur: “Gentlemen, I have a cunning plan. Obviously, there is always some mix up, and we can´t beat those dastardly southern Indians on the fields of Battle. So, why don´t we simply walk around them and take their cities as they are sieging Aurangabad?”

All Members of the war council: “Emperor Babur always has the best of all ideas!”.

And so, our brave emperors and his new and improved war council ™, which are not just a bunch of yes-sayers, march off to glory.

1.1. 1493- Our explorer discovers Oman. They hate us (-200). Emperor Babur is certain, that those are just freaks, but the other folks we will meet will just love us.
1.19. 1493- Emperor Babur and his army reach Hyderabad. Emperor Barbur orders to storm the walls.
1. 27. 1493- Our conquistador discovers Ayahatu (or whatever). They, too, hate us on first sight, and add that we Mughals smell bad, too. (-200).
2. 6. 1493- The Mughals conquer Hyderabad.

Emperor Babur: “HOODYHOO! Off to the next one. And don´t forget to erect a bunch of statues of me here, too!”

3.6. 1493- Our explorer discovers Aden.

The Mughal army has just set forth to Nagpur, as the emperor is told the news about the new country.
Emperor Babur: “And, how do they like us?”
Messenger: “Errr, not at all, I am afraid, sir.”
Emperor Babur: “What do you mean with not at all?”
Messenger: “Well, we sent a messenger a shore, and the locals killed him and pinned a note on his back, before returning him to our ship with a catapult. The note said WE HATE YOU in capital letters, and there was a little PS telling us to do something more often that is called “washing” more often.”
Emperor Babur: “Hmmm. You are right. They do seem to hate us… Anyway, send some spies forth do discover the meaning of this washing thing you mentioned. I have to wage a war, you know…

4. 13. 1493- The remnants of the Hyderabad army defeat us in Mady Pradesh, using 40 cannons.
4.25. 1493- Hansa declares war on Prussia
5.27. 1493- Our conquistador dies while heading back towards India. Some natives clubbed him to death while chanting: “You stink and suck, You stink and suck.”.
9.27. 1493- Amidst much “Hoody Hoo” shouting, we conquer Nagpur.
11. 2. 1493- We lay siege on Mady Pradesh, the last barrier between us and victory.
3.1. 1493- Ireland declares it’s independence from Britain
3. 11. 1493- Mady Pradesh is conquered. Emperor Babur gracefully annexes the kingdom of Hyderabad.

After the lavish celebrations of victory, Emperor Babur summons his Council of Peace.

Emperor Babur: “How many troops do we have left?”
Councilmember “We don´t know. We are the council of peace.”
Emperor Babur: “Dismissed.”

A few hours later.

Emperor Babur: “How many troops do we have left?”
Member of the new and improved warcouncil ™: “All in all about 20.000, your potent Excellency.”
Emperor Babur: “How many troops do we think does Mysore have?”
Member of the new and improved warcouncil ™: “All in all about 80.000, your most potent and attractive Excellency.”
Emperor Babur: “Sucks. Well, then I think we will improve the infrastructure, send forth colonists, stabilize and do some other boring stuff before we smash those… Dismissed.”

Yeah. The limit of the Mughal maps is actually pretty funny. I mean, at that time, if I remember it right, the turkish Kalif was already the highest authority of the sunnite faith, having the right to call out for a holy war, etc, having an authority that is comparable to the german emperor- that is, he is nominally the leader of the sunni world. Yet, Emperor Babur doesn´t even have the faintest idea the Turks even exist! :)

They start with all army, trade and infrastructure technology at lvl 2. Navy tech is 0.
Also, Babur is a very good leader (attributewise), and also a decent general with a bonus to sieging. (That is why I was able to storm those cities so quick, once I was able to avoid actual fieldbattles.)

yeah, i've always thought that a bit unrealistic. the mughals are sunni muslim, but they don't know where mecca is? at the very least they should know of the hedjaz and mecca, if not the turks as well. also, the mughals were of mongol descent (being the remnants of the indian part of genghis' empire), but they don't know where china and mongolia are? i could understand them not knowing much about europe, but being sunni muslim, they should at least know the limits of the arab world, and the location of the homeland of their ancestors.

nice job so far. with the mughal's military leaders and decent tech levels, you should be able to hold your own once the portuguese arrive in india.

another thing that bothers me too is, why are the mughals exotic tech? they should be muslim tech level, since their government (if not the general populace) is sunni. or does the tech level only reflect the majority population, which in this case would be exotic (given that most indians at that time would have been hindu or buddhist)?

Regarding those persian rugs, I will definetly go for those. It doesn´t sit well with Emperor Babur that there are those shiite splitters... Plus, I have a permanent casus bellum against them
Afterwards, I will go a bit more into diplomacy eventually. I don´t want to mess with the Turks, though. At least not actively. And I would like to go to war only when I have a Casus Bellum or someone else declares war on me.
Now, thank you all for your praise. I am pretty certain that I will be able to post the next chapter within 24 hours.

yeah, take those persian rugs (and their gold too). then you can convert the whole persian empire to sunni and get a HUGE point bonus. that should help you keep pace with the infidel spanish. plus, there's a good chance persia would re-convert to sunni, and you could attack them again with no BB hit, since you'd have a CB again. it's like your own little point factory. :D
