1681. Colony in Goa.
1687. Renew colonization of Jakarta.
1692. Jakarta upgraded to colonial town (1000+ people).
1695. Three trade post attempts in Indonesia fail.
1698. Trading post in Surabaja.

Wars and assorted things.
=========================
This war against France, Spain seems to really field some troops. The occupy French owned Modena, and have 18000 men in place to besiege the mighty fortress in Savoy. Still, the French quality and numbers of arms is beyond what we can field.

1678. Persia declares war on the Uzbeks. We are not involved, and there is no need for us to participate.

1680. Start of a naval equipment factory in Ragusa.

First Ayathuyan war
1684. We declare war on Ayathuya. We have assembled two armies of 30-40.000 men each, totaling 80 cannon, 6000 cavalry and 66.000 foot.
Our first target is Kwai, where our first army of 40.000 men meets the Ayathuyan army of 35.000 cavalry. We defeat them when our second army comes to our assistance. They are driven away with an unknown number of casualties. We do know our own casualties, 50% of our combined army. We split our army, sending half of our troops after the demoralized enemy to their capitol. When they arrive, the enemy has already fully recovered their morale. and in one of the most disastrous battles ever to befall our empire, the entire army of 12.000 infantry, 3000 cavalry and 30 guns is annihilated.

1685. Fall of Kwai, after 35.000 more casualties.
They offer Kwai, which we accept, as attrition caused the loss of the greater part of our army. They still have 22000 cavalry in the field, which seems to be immune to attrition.

1688. Russia declares war on Persia. This results in a war of Russia vs Persia, Uzbeks and Portugal. The war ends in 1690, when Russia pays Persia in gold.

"What an awful peaceful period. One war fought, with just one province gained. Your reports start reading like those of our enemies."
My boss was sincerely dissatisfied.
I answered:
"Well, on the positive side, we did bring the Q'ran to Indonesia. And we are the most powerful nation in that area. Our nearest competitor, Portugal, has just a minor colony of 300 people, and a number of trade posts. But they are still to far ahead of us to take them on directly. So the second part of my mission, 'Spread Islam in India and Indonesia', has been done. But I still need to unify India."
(ooc: Portuguese naval is 39, ours 30. Our land tech is 38, theirs is 40. The naval difference will allow them to kick our navies of their shores, and we must land and at least partly occupy their home area to claim their Indonesian possessions).
My boss shook his head.
"You say you have fullfilled one part of your mission, and you may have the nitty gritty lawyers on your hand in that, but I'd rather see more of Indonesia covered. See you get three or four large island entirely under your control. "
"I have already fulfilled one part of my mission" I objected. "Once the other part has been fulfilled too, I will be happy to do something extra. But not before that."
"You know what I believe about lawyers" my boss replied. "The best corruption of the the term righteousnous we ever invented. But we dont play by any rules except the rule of the most powerful one, and that is our boss below. So unless you want to face him..."

Report 13.

Commerce
The period 1700-1725 is marked by fierce competition for market share in Delhi and Manado. By 1710 it becomes clear that several countries are catching up in trade technology. From 1714 till the end of the period we temporarily concentrate on regaining our competitive advantage and suspend the arms race.

Tech race
1702. The navy exercises the fleet in the line-ahead formation. (naval tech 31).
1704. The navy exercises Grapeshot at close range (naval 32).
1704. The army introduces Artillery ammo carriage (land tech 38).
1705. The navy learns the advantages of chainshot against enemy sails. (naval 33).
1706. Naval tech 34: early clocks.
1710. The navy introduces and trains melee tactics (35) as nets and grappling hooks.
1714. The navy intrduces triple deckers (naval tech 36).

Colonization
In 1702 we establish a colony in Cambay, the last shore province that was open for colonization. For once, we do not murder its population.
In 1719 Cambay becomes a city with nearly 3000 inhabitants.

Rulers
This period was marked by a frequent turnover in rulers.
1707. Bahadur Shah rules the glorious Mughal nation
1712. Jahandar Shah rules
1713. Farrukh Siyar rules the nation.
1719. Rafi ud-darajat rulkes the Mughals.
1719. Shah Jahan II rules.
1719. Muhammad Shah rules.

Wars
1700. Denmark, Sweden, Crimea, Russia and Hanze have a european war against Poland, Austria, Spain, New Spain, Bohemia, Prussia and Brandenburg. peace with mamelyuks.

1703. Persia declares war on Uzbeks.

1705. Turkey decalres war on mameluks. Uzbeks and Persia sign a peace, Alga goes to the uzbeks.
Russia declares war on Persia.

1708. Poland declares war on Crimea, resulting in a war of Denmark, Sweden, Crimea, Russia and Hanze have a european war against Poland, Austria, Spain, New Spain, Bohemia, Prussia and Brandenburg.

1709. Russia receives Astrakahan and AzarBajdan from Persia.

1710. Persia declares war on the Uzbeks. Persia receives the aid of Genoa & Portugal. Predictably, the war ends with Persia paying the damages.

1713. Spain declares war on England. This results in a war of Iroqouis/England/Hessen vs Spain/Poland/Austria/New Spain/Bohemia/Prussia.

1716. Persia declares war on the Uzbeks again.

1717. CtD!
The war between Spain and England ends when Spain receives Nova Scotia.

1718. The war between Persia and the Uzbeks ends with Persia paying them off.

1720. Russian declares war on the Uzbeks. The Uzbeks agree to peace a year later, receiving 35 in indemnities.

The 7th Persian war
In 1723 we declare war on Persia. France forsakes its obligations, so we have to fight Portugal, Genoa and Persia.
We march on both Helvetia (owned by Genoa) and Genoa itself. In the middle east, we have all our troops on the wrong side of Isfahan, so we recruit heavily in this part of the world. The Persians succeed in taking Iraq with less troops and less guns much faster than we can take Isfahan. With minor recruited forces we siege Kurdistan, Nuysaybin. Turkey takes Kirkut and helps to retake Iraq.

In Europe, we concentrate on Genoa first. If we would concentrate on Portugal, they would be a thorn in our side on every trip to Portugal. Helvetia is the first Genoese province to fall, half a year later followed by Genoa itself. Now the most difficult part remains: Corsica.

1724. Corsica turns out to be a tough nut. Not only does it have a medium fortress, attrition is high too. The Genoese fleet contests ours with varying degrees of success. Throughout the year, we regularly succeed to supply our troops (ooc: read : we deliver more guns and troops). The Turkish admirals Ishaf and Nish play an important role, they land additional troops and keep a fleet of 70 ships in the area.

We also land 46000 men on the shores of Algarve.

Towards the end of the year France turns out to have changed sides: they have joined our alliance, and ask us to join them in a war against the Palatinat. We say yes, and find ourselves into conflict with Baden too. We send an army of 37000 from Genoa to Baden, but before we get there France signs peace with the Palatinate, receiving a single province.

1725. In March, Corsica falls into our greedy hands, and we annex the state. Three more provinces to raise tax and soldiers from.
The Portuguese have their homeland heavily fortified, so the siege of Algarve goes slow. When after a year of siege we finally make some progress, the Portuguese general grabs his chance when our force has dwindled down to a 150 guns - no infantry or cavalry left.

1724. After being beaten in Algarve, the army flees to Tago, only to find the enemy their again before we get there. Our flight takes us back to Algarve, we are lucky the Portuguese does not pursue us again. We reinforce several times with 7000 infantry.

The Portuguese kick us out of Transkei. The armies involved are small, just 2000 Portuguese versus 3000 of Mughals. We raise new troops and attempt to make a comeback with 12000 men, but are repulsed by 9000 Portuguese. From now on, they Portuguese monarch insists we surrender Transkei and all our gold.

1725. We make very slow headway against Algarve, despite 200+ guns, a blockade and several 1000's of infantry. Infantry recruited in Milan and Genoa deserts in Algarve almost as fast as we can recruit them in Italy.

"What are you trying to do?" my boss hissed. "Trying to beat our enemy in peacefulness? Out of 25 years, and with all the money in the world, you fight just 2 wars. That does not befit our kind! Arms, bloodshed, war, treachery, those are our tools! I feel you are usurped too much by development and building up things."
With a shock I realized he might be right. But there was no way I was going to admit that.
"The Mughals are the most powerful nation, but even they can not take on the world alone." I replied. "The western nations generally still have better arms. But as you can see I am fighting them right now."
My boss grumbled:
"Better annex those Portuguese bastards right away. They have done too much harm to our cause in southern America."

I'm afraid your boss has got a point. That's a whole lot of peace. In my Sibir game I have fought 3 wars in the first 6 years, two resulting in complete annexation. Or maybe I'm just really bloodthirsty...:p

Great Job CP, I'm enjoying this one. I like to play as the Mughals as well...its nice to see a different strategy employed to great success. Keep up the good work...pretty soon you should be done...quite an accomplishment.

It may not be the world, but it does show most of the Med.

The Dark Green in Northern Italy, the former yugoslavian Adr. coast, and Cyprus are M. owned. Of course the dark green on the right side of the image is also Mughal controlled.

Report 14: 1726-1750

Seventh Persian war (cont'd)
1726. With over 450 in cash we start by recruiting a lot more infantry in Italy.
In the middle east, Armenia is the last Persian province to fall to combined Mughal Turkish armies. The Sultan sure earns a letter of thanks. Persia gives up Kurdistan and Armenia as indemnities.

Turkey accepts 41d from Portugal. From now on, we will have to do without the numerous Turkish fleet. Twice Portugal invades Balucht.
Somehow the peace of Turkey resets our siege of tago to its initial strength of 6.

1727.
An army of 10.000 men is sent from table to Zambeli. This poor province has been turned into a large fortress. With a local supply for only 4000, the siege this will be costly.
In July we capture Tago. We continue to Oporto. But revolts are growing, and when the Portuguese refuse to give up Bali, Manado and Algarve, we settle for Manado and Algarve. With a base on Portuguese grounds, a new war will be less costly. Alas an annexation now is out of the question.

Tech race
1727. We invent pre-capitalism (trade level 9).
1728. Salvo fire (land tech 39).
1730. Military land tech: mathematical siege(40).
1742. Our trade level advances to pre-industrial (level 10).
1743. The army efficiency is enhanced by sappeurs (tech 41).
1744. Light infantry further enhances the fighting effectiveness of our army (land tech 42).
1745. The brown bess musket greatly improves fire speed. (land tech 43).
1746. Standardized artillery greatly reduced the need to carry all kinds of ammo. (land tech 44).
1747. Cartridges speed up musket loading and artillery loading, enabling a higher rate of fire. (land tech 45).
1747. Attack columns increase our attack effectiveness in battles. (land tech 46).
1748. The navy works out a system of food supplies for ships on blockade duty. (naval tech 37).
1750. Copper bottoms will increase the speed of the ships in or navy (naval tech 38).

Colonization
1728. A new colony is founded in Madras.
1728. Trade post in Manira.
1729. Colonists establish themselves in Karroo.
1731. Trading post in Sambalpur.
1736. Trading post in Bilaspur.
1738. Aires is expanded to a full colony.
1747. Madras is expanded to a colonial town (1000+ people).
1748. Trading post in Allahabad
1749. Trading post in Jamshedpur.

The 2nd war against Ayathuya
1728. China declares war on Ayuthaya. We have 3 armies of around 15-20K in the area, not much, but when China rolls over them first...
China has already annexed the Dai Viet. I watch this war with more than average interest.

1729. Upgrade of fortress in Kwai against future Chinese aggression.
Russia declares war on the Uzbeks.

1730. The are revolts in Helvetia(2) and Genoa (2 or 3) to deal with.

1731. China seems to have exhausted the large Ayathuyan cavalry army, so its time to reap the results. I declare wear on Ayathuya. Troops go to Bangkok and Kuala. China storms Bangkok with our aid, than finds gold sufficient compensation. We siege it again, and send extra troops to Kuala as the siege goes very slow in that province. On December 30, we annex the small state. Just before that, they manage to burn our trading post in Sunda.

Among the bounty is a fleet of 4 warships, more than we discovered in Genoa.

War against Napels, Austria, Sweden, Venice
1732. Naples declares war. The annexation of Ayathuya has made us the bad boy of the world.
The main problem with this 2 province nation is that has 80.000 men, about as much as we have in entire Europe. But we have it scattered over Cyprus, Illyria, Ragusa, Milan, Portugal and Helvetia. They got it concentrated in 1 army.
In April Austria declares war. This is worse. Austria is a lot larger, and adjacent. And I am not interested in more wars. Just in a short, well prepared war against France.
Turkey and Georgia remained loyal to us when it came to tiny Milan, but the DoW of Austria shows how deep the love of Georgia goes: only skin deep.
One month later, Nubia declares itself independent of Turkey. Of course we are loyal to Turkey.
In May, Persia declares war.
Twice the Austrians storm Istria, twice they fail. After the second attempt we attack their demoralized army, but our 9000 men are butchered by their 22000 men.

1733. The Austrians finally capture Istria. We pay them 250 and they march home.
In April, Venice declares war. We settle the war with Persia by claiming gold for our selves and Nuyssaybin for Turkey. The Venetian army of 58.000 men chooses Istria as its target.
We choose Venice.
By November, the Venetian army has been halved to 19.000 men, both due to attrition and incessant Turkish attacks. Then Sweden declares war. They own Tyrol, a province we march upon without delay. The grateful fools in Thrace invade Napels, with the only result that their 23000 men are decimated by their more numerous adversaries.

1734. We crush fresh Swedish recruits in Tyrol, beat of an attempted invasion by Sweden in Algarve, and storm the walls of Innsbruck. Meanwhile the Turk takes Swedish held Moldavia. Though we could claim Tyrol, I wait till our brave Turkish allies also hold Swedish owned Maros or Banat.

Towards the end of the year, we suggest a white peace to Naples, an offer they happily accept. Napels was the first to declare war, but had just sat on its **** and defended itself.

1735. The war with Korea, a remnant from the conquest of Ayathuya, ends in a white peace due to inactivity.
With Tyrol, Moldavia and Banat occupied by Turkey, the peace dialog with Sweden show just 1 star. They refuse to give up 250 gold. One month later, they refuse again, this time to give up Moldavia. The third time I try settle for Tyrol, something they refuse too.

The Venetians refuse a blank peace. The Turks are doing very well against the Swedes, who simple don't succeed in building an army large enough to contest the Turkish forces. But they remain stubborn and unwilling to give up any land. So I suggest a neutral separate peace to them - let Turkey quarrel it out with them. I have to get rid of the war exhaustion. And, oh surprise, when the Doge realizes that he is the last nation to be at war with me, he too agrees to a neutral peace.
This ends the war.

wars abroad
1736. The Uzbeks surrender Alga and Bouzatchi to Russia.

1739. England declares war on France. This means Naples/France/Tuscany vs England/Iroqouis/Portugal/Scotland.

1740. Turkey finally receives Moldavia from Sweden.
Poland declares war on Crimea. These two nations have fought several wars over the past decades, and Crimea is getting out worse and worse. This time its Russia/Denmark/Crimea vs Poland/Austria/New Spain/Spain/Bohemia/Brandenburg. But this time its different: within one and a half month Poland pays of the Crimeans.

1741. England pays the contents of the vaults of the Bank of England to Paris. I take the strategic decision to abandon Cyprus. I have two orthodox provinces, which both revolt several times a year. So does Protestant Helvetia. Tolerance for all Christian religions except RC is 0. Armenias population is slowly brought down.

1743. Armenias population drops below 5000 and a group of settlers proclaims islam as the official religion.
Turkey gets one of its anti-Mamaluk fits and declares war again. We like to do this ally a favor, and declare we will help them, as we have always done over the past two and a halve century.

1745. We make a separate peace with the Mameluks.

1748. Ahmad Shah rules the Mughals.
Crimea ends another war with Poland by surrendering Poltava. Mameluks pay their annual tax to Turkey in gold.

1750. In a war between Sweden and Poland, Sweden gains some of the latter’s Balkan provinces.

"How often did you declare war this period". Again the face of my boss showed disapproving looks.
"Well, I declared war on Ayathuya." And as a result of that, I fought wars with Naples, Austria and Venice."
"And what did you get out of them? Ayathuya? Yes. But nothing in Europe!"
"You yourself told me I should keep my fingers of Europe."
For a moment he had no answer. Of course that had no been my motive. My armies in Europe had been too small to achieve substantial results. Also, my aim was Indonesia, not Europe. And most of what I had in Indonesia was trade posts. Trade posts which could easily be burned. But I didn’t feel like telling that to my boss.
"What I mean, is that your are way to peaceful. You know full well that we do not love peace. Take your colleague in Turkey as an example. He happily sacrificed 23000 souls of his army to send us some extra souls down here.
“He is a fool. Don’t forget I had to bring him back on target. Those 23000 souls could have been used a whole lot better. But as you don’t appreciate our alliance and my efforts in this respect, I will discontinue our alliance. You are forgetting my targets. India is virtually unified. Three of the larger islands in Indonesia are under Islamic control too. Some more trading posts on Borneo, and conquest of the Portuguese islands, and the job is done.”
“Yes how nice you remind me. I told you to annex Borneo. But unless I overlook it, I don0t seem to see a trace of Portuguese annexation.”
“If will regard this as your permission to further mettle in European affairs.” I said. “OK, I’ll DoW Portugal.”
“You are taking too much liberties against me. I already told you to annex Portugal! You are too peaceful! Don’t rule like our enemies! Fight! Kill! Plunder! Or do I have to degrade you to furnace lighter third class?”

Mughal1750.gif

ooc: about the above image: It shows an un-edited map of the world. Uzbeks control a sizeable area, Portugal holds the small islands in Indonesia, and both are dark green like Mughals.

Russia. And a very normal development for Russia, I may add - I have seen this in several games. It looks very impressive, but most of it consists of trading posts.

Rulers
1754. Alamgir II rules.
1759. Shah Jahan III rules.
1760. Shah Alam III rules.

Tech race
1753. One trick we learn from the French navy is double shot (naval tech 39).
1753. Platoon fire will certainly help is in the next battle against the French.
1754. In the next war, dragoons (land tech 48) will certainly drive those French beasties of the field.
1755. We now employ brigade formations (land tech 48).
1758. Grouping brigade in divisions (land tech 50) will further enhance our operational efficiency.
1761. Gribeauval guns (land tech 51) increase fire power.
1766. Infra structure Late baroque. (infra 6).
1772. Government tech (infra 7).
1774. Square formations (land tech 52).
1774. In November, we equip the ships with carronades, (naval tech 41).

Colonization
1751. TP in Riau.
1762. TPs in Sulawesi, Makkassar and Salabanka. 3 of the 4 Indonesian islands are now fully Mughal controlled.
1763. Inhabitants of Patna killed, trading post built. While we are on the job, trading posts in Bandjarmasin and Selatan are built.
1764. TP in Jaffna. French establish TP in Colombo.
1765. TP in Sarawak.
1766. TP to Brunei.
1767. TP to Sabah.
1770. TP in Natal.

Wars and assorted bits
1752. The First French war
France declares war on us. The diplomatic message does not even specify a reason - I smell the dirty hand work of a colleague. The French march on Helvetia, which we in vain attempt to relieve (13.000 casualties on our side). They take it by storm. We take four trading posts in India and on Ceylon.

Russia declares war on the Uzbeks.

Nice has only a small fortress, but it still impossible for 45.000 Mughals, assisted by 150 guns, to take it by storming the walls. At the end, the Mughals have lost 20.000 men and 30 guns, the defenders just 2000 men. France has two Italian provinces, which we start to siege with 15000 men forces. Modena is the first to fall.

Invading Algarve with 11000 men, the French entirely destroy our army of 150 guns, 2000 cavalry and 28000 infantry.

We land 20000 men on the shores of the US, where France has a large number of trade posts. Out of revenge for the defeats in Algarve and Nice, we simple start burning them.

1753.
Nice is taken, Helvetia is under siege again, and so is Luca. With four stars, we suggest a peace treaty to France for their two trading posts in India. They refuse.

With 6 stars, they offer Pondicherri. Too little guys. We demand three trade posts, they refuse. Com'on guys, Luca, Modena, Nice, Fox, Detroit, Carolina and Michilimaikan are worth a lot more than three trading posts.

Then they finally offer two India trading posts + Jaffna : yes=CtD.

Ok, again:
Burning trading posts in Santee, Alleghany, Alabama, Tennessee,Kentucky, Miamis, Illinois, Hindua, Milwaukee, Niagara. Some of them have 40 or 60 traders, some just 10. From a distance, it looks like half of North America is in flames.

We win a battle in Nice, siege Languedoc and Alsace. France sends an insulting peace offer of Pondicherri.

Burning Oshawa, Huron, Ottawa, Nipissing, Nipigon. I offer peace for Colombo, Pondicherri and Trivandrum. CtD!

Reload. I offer the same peace again. CtD!

Reload. As a test, I offer peace for Trivandrum and Pondicherri. They accept. But this is not the peace I wish.
Reload. Peace for Carolina, Pondicherri and Nice. They refuse.

We storm Roussillion with 11.000 men, their 5000 men surrender when we have suffered 8000 casualties. Their only offer of peace is a ridiculous Pondicherri.
I counter with an offer of Carolina, Modena and Pondicherri. They refuse. They retake Helvetia and Nice.

I take Languedoc. They offer Pondicherri and Fox. I decline. Milan is briefly sieged by a French army, but its large fortification is the best what Mughal engineers can build, and after three months and 7000 deserters the French march home.

I send a peace offer for Carolina and Pondicherri: CtD!
Frustrated, I load again and settle for Modena and Pondicherri.
end of first French war

The Uzbeks agree to end their war with Russia with the surrender of another 2 provinces.

1754.
In order to evacuate our army in North America, we establish a trading post in Santee.
In the next war, dragoons (land tech 48) will certainly drive those French beasties of the field.

The second French war
In November, France again declares war. This causes internal chaos in their government. But their main army of 59000 men annihilates an army of 9000 Mughals in the fire phase, while in Languedoc 29000 Mughals (20000/5000/40) are defeated by 9000 French (4000/5000/0). Their main army takes Helvetia with hardly taking a pause, and marched on to Milan. In North America, we overrun the French holdings.

1755.
To my great worries, they make significant progress at the walls of Milan (ooc: within two months, they tumble from 8 to 5).
The French refuse our offer of peace for Nice (ooc: 3 stars).
But when Cevennes is taken, the French offer 3 of their north american colonies. An offer which we think we cannot refuse.
end of second French war

1756.
The Uzbeks agree to end their war with Russia with the surrender of another 2 provinces.
Revolts in Modena and Helvetia force us out of these provinces, but we succeed in returning soon.

Algarve revolts, a revolt which we crush with fresh recruits from Genoa.

Third French war
France declares war again! Will they never stop? We again call on Turkey, but this time they forgot their centuries old obligations. We march south and take Luca.

In the North, Sweden declares war on Russia.

After Luca, we take Roussilon, but The French refuse our single province peace offer (3 stars).

But then the tide reverses. 2000 Frenchies (2000/0/0) repulse an attack of 7000 Mughals (7000/0/0), all morale invincible. To my big surprise, 32000 French have taken Kars. Where did they come from?

But I manage to crush a force of just recruited 7000 cavalry armies in Savoy, and take Languedoc.

1758.
Russia accepts Ingermanland from Sweden in return for peace.

After taking Kars, the French have marched home. Homesick, no doubt. But I suppose they have stuck at early cartography, as they land in Luca instead of France. They unship their entire army, fire a single round of ammo at the town, and ship again.
The Mughals take Gascogne, besiege Cevennes, Helvetia and besiege Nice. The latter is under siege for over a year.

1759.
After two years of siege, Nice falls. I suggest a peace handing over Luca and Nice, and France agrees. Their stability is already up again from -3 to 0 again.
end of third French war

1760.
Reinforcements of the army.

Tuscany declares war....
Tuscany beats up our army in Luca, asks 5 gold and receive it. Cheaper than continued warfare.

1762.
Spain declares war on Persia. Why?

1764.
ooc :Loading somehow means a new invasion of merchants in Delhi.
Hessen declares war on France. It is followed by Palatinat and Naples.

1765.
Persia pays Spain in gold.
Palatinat pays France for peace.

1766.
Revolt on Cyprus.
Russia declares war on Sweden: Bavaria/Sweden vs Russia/Crimea/Venice/Denmark/Georgia.

1767.
France pays gold to Sweden. Rebels capture Cyprus, and we besiege it again. Recon shows that Portugal is virtually undefended.

1768. Cyprus captured.
Full annexation of Kleves by France.
Turkey declares war on Mameluks. Just for a change, I suppose.
In May we have fleets with armies in position for the coasts of Zambeli, Algarve and Oporto. That will mean that Tago and Algiers will have to be be attacked in a second round. The only serious opposition is expected in Zambeli, which has a force of 8000 men.
On May 29, we declare war. The Portuguese take the first round, chasing away our observation merchant (transport) from the coast of Pernambuc.

Hessen gives up Munster to France.
Portugal replies with a demand for 250gp.
The province where we expected the heaviest opposition, Zambeli, avoids combat. Our army of 17.000 foot, 5000 horse and 100 cannon lays siege to Zambeli without combat. That means they will probably sail of to an unknown destination.
Attrition in Zambeli quickly wears us down and the local officer is forced to abandon the siege before we can rush in reinforcements.

Twice Portugal invades Hormouz. Our 27000 men and 52 guns easily dispose of them. A new siege force in Zambeli is also fast run down by desertion, illness and incompetence.

Our admirals take revanche on their earlier defeat by defeating three Portuguese fleets of the Coast of Table and Zambeli.

At the end of the year Algiers, Oporto and Tago are still at their intial strengths, and prediction is still 12 months - the same as half a year ago.

1769.
Two forces of 13000 men each have landed in Zambeli. We try to build up a force in the neighborhood, but in July despite 6000 men reinforcements from Table the remnants of 30000 men have run down to 2x3000.

By September, we capture Oporto.

But Zambeli is not again under siege by October. The Mughal empire needs five large fleets, but we have just 3. One is needed to keep Tago blocked, one to keep Algiers blocked, one to transport news troops to Algiers, one to keep Zambeli blocked, one to ferry lots of reinforcements to Zambeli. In Inhambana we establish a trade post to ease supply to Zambeli.

1770.
Oporto is solidly in our hands. Expectations for Tago and Algiers are 9 resp. 12 months. (118 resp. 40 guns). Zambeli refuses all attempts to become undersiege.

About every three months Portugal sends a peace offer, since the fall of Oporto this has changed from a demand for 250d to a white peace.

Russia accepts peace with Sweden and receives Karelia.

In April, Tago is taken. Algiers is slowly crumbling. By July, we manage to collect 23000 men in Inhambane, and march to Zambeli. The 23000 are down to 19000 by the time they arrive, which is insufficient to siege this sickening fortress.

In October, Algiers is taken. This frees troops and ships for Zambeli!

1771.
Just Zambeli - is it worth it?
Jan 1 starts of with a revolt in Mysore. War weariness set in a while ago, and more and more revolts can be expected. But with Algiers taken, we can ship these guns to Zambezi. The army besieging Zambezi is down to 11000 men.
A small cavalry force is sent along the Brazilian coast to burn all Portuguese trade posts. In april, we have after three years of warfare an infantry force of 10300 assisted by 132 guns. By July, their number has dropped to 5889 and 128 guns. Siege has stopped and walls are still at 7. 23000 men from Algiers unship in Zambezi, swelling the numbers to 37000/280.

Saxony declares war on Austria. The Saxon diplomats must have made a slight oversight: Saxony finds itself alone vs Austria, P-L, New Spain, Spain, Bohemia and Prussia. Or perhaps it is just a matter of honour?

By September the force in Zambezi is down to 220 guns. Just guns. 60 guns and 37000 men have disappeared. October 1 means the loss of another 35 guns, down to 185. This also means the province is no longer effectively sieged.

In November, we loose another 20 guns, the guns are down to 165.

Saxony escapes its erroneous war by paying its entire cash.

1772.
In Indonesia, I start taking measures just in case I have to give up sieging Zambezia. I burn their trade post in Bali and start building my own.
Flores, Timor, Ceram, Tindore and Buru are occupied at leisure.
The siege of Zambezia makes slow progress, despite a constant stream of 3K armies from Table and a constant supply by sea of 13K armies from India the number of besiegers often drops below the required number.
But by June the walls are down to +3.

1773.
The walls of Zambezia are down to -1. But we are desperately short of soldiers. By february, the army in Zambezia is down to 27 operable guns out of probably over 350 we shipped to it. But with reinforcements the walls luckily go down to -4.
But then, despite having supplies at sea, our blockading fleet drops below some required number of ships. All through the rest of the year the walls go steadily UP from -4 to -1.

We are able to correct a slight oversight: Azores. We capture them. Portugal thrice invades our Italian holdings, they invade Hormouz. In these cases the local armies can easily dispose of them.

1774.
The Portuguese invade Sunda, take Bandung, and defeat us there. We raise 3000 new troops in Jakarta.
In July 1774, our 15000 men reinforcements arrive just a day too late and find the walls repaired to a perfect state: +7. Time to burn any remaining TPs in Indonesia.

1775.
Thrice P. rejects our 3 province demand. We settle for Oporto and Algiers in March. The next day, we raise our TP in Inhambane to a colony.

"It pleases me that you have finally managed to wage some wars and shed some wars." the voice of my boss sounded so friendly I was nearly taken in. I forced myself to keep silent, which made my boss continue:
"But you ability to wage war is so abysmal I simply cannot find words to express myself. Three wars with France, and still France has a trade post in Colombo! 10 years of war with Portugal, and a simple province escapes you!"
"Simple! People die like flies! I must have sacrificed over 350 guns and 400.000 men to that blasted fortress!"
He waved his hand.
"You have not yet fulfilled the task to bring the Islam to entire Indonesia - several islands are empty and France can get there any moment. And France is in Colombo. I regard Colombo as part of India."
"I don't"
He waved his hand in dismissal. "But I do. Kick them out and take the area. Both Indonesia and Colombo. If you don't, what about destroying the enemies headquarters on earth?"
"Rome, you mean?"
"Exactly. Else, failing all of these, I was very serious in what I said about becoming furnace stoker third class. You know our motto: Better to reign in hell than to serve else where. You got the exceptional privilege to reign on earth. If you are not up to that privilege..."

I grumbled. An attack on France would not be easy. All of Europe has been at peace almost all of this century, except the wars against us. As a result, nearly every nation is spending huge fortunes on raising the defenses of their holdings. Soon they will have to spend their money on something else - I estimate 75% of the worlds provinces have large or maximum fortifications. Even the French provinces of Carolina and Niagara have maximum fortifications. The most noticeable exceptions are a large number of low income provinces in South America. I checked the maps. P-L had annexed Austria. With both Hungary and Austria under Polish control, it formed a super country. Better avoid that.

Attack Russia. Take back the Siberian territories.
Aye, aye, captain.
I indeed fought a war with Russia, though a brief one and unintentionally. I took a few Russian provs, but not Sibir - despite your well known fondness I find them way too poor.

Report 16: 1776-1792

Tech race
1775: August 1: Breakthrough tactics(naval 42).
1786. Infra tech advances to Manufacturies (land tech 8). All other techs are already maxed out. The next tech will be available after 1800.

Colonization
1775: May 1: TP in Flores.
1775: May 4: TP in Buru.
1775: May 5: TP in Timor fails.
1776: July 30: TP in Timor.
1777. TP on Ceram.
1778: TP in Tindore fails. To prevent further failures, the populations is exterminated. Its a nice treat that our 1000 men army in two battles does not loose a single soldier.
1779. TP in Tindore.
1780. TP in Kalimantan.
1781. TP in Irawady.
1782. TP in Tarakan, connecting India and former Ayathuyya areas.
1785. A group of colinists is sent to Santee.
1790. Some merchants establish a TP in Esklimat.
1790. Failed colonization attempt in Manado.
1792. Colonists to Manado.

Wars and other bits
1775. July: our army arrives in Madira to crush a revolt, but alas during the battle the naval equipment factory is destroyed.
October 1: Oporto revolts. The nearest fleet is in Table, the nearest army in Cyprus.
December 1: Aurangabad revolts.

1776. There is still an army in Tago! Demoralized, 120 guns, 7000 horse, 19000 foot strong, it is sent to Oporto. They should be able to deal with 23000 peasants. Not!. The battle is saved by 17000 fresh troops from Cyprus.

May 1: Persia declares war on Uzbeks. Persia is joined by Turkey and Nubia. There is no need to participate, and we need our strength later.

1777. RM with Turkey renewed.

1778. Jan 1: Turkey invites us to a military alliance with themselves, Persia and Nubia. I accept - against France, which has nearly every province at its maximum its fortification, I can use all help they can offer.
Modena revolts with 32000 men, but the army in Luca is 13/7/3 strong and crushes them.
In March, both Luca and Modena revolts. Both revolts are handled easily by the same army.

1782. Oporto revolts twice. Both revolts are crushed.

1783. The war between Persia and Uzbeks ends with Persia receiving Persis. Turkey and Nubia have contributed nothing. Uzbeks have sieged Isfahan for a while, but gave up. Persia slowly took Lut and Persis.

1784. Turkey declares war on Mameluks, Persia dishonored themselves. We are loyal to Turkey, but wont send any troops. Regrettably, the Mameluks have no allies. Predictably, the war ends with Mameluks paying gold.

The Polish War
1785. July 23: Sweden declares war on P-L: The first major war after what seems like decades of European peace. This DoW creates a war between P-L, Palatinat, Hessen vs Sweden/Turkey/Mughal.
In Austria, we defeat 3000 Polish recruits before we are forced back.

1786. A Mughal army of 15000 men and 30 guns is insufficient to effectively siege Styria. We are chased away by 123000 peasants.

1787. Sweden controls Hessen owned Zeeland. I declare war on Baden to reach Hessen itself. And the Palatinat. Marching through Baden, our army of 23000 men and 120 guns takes Mainz by storm. The 13000 men army of the Palatinat is quickly defeated, after which we march on Pfalz. Meanwhile, Hessen is recruiting fast in their home lands - from 6000 to 20000 in a year.
Then, in July, Sweden decides on a status quo peace with P-L. Our gains in Palatinat are lost. But there is still the war against Baden, so all troops go to Baden.

1788. The year is spent with building up the army in Helvetia and reinforcing the army in Baden.

1789. In March Baden is taken and the mini country is annexed.
End of Polish war

1790. All of France is fortified to maximum level. So is virtually all of Germany. So is all of European Spain and all of P-L, England and northern Russia.
But Chino is a new French colony.

The Russian war
August 3: Sweden declares war on Russia. Turkey is loyal, Crimea and Ethiopia forget their obligations. Venice is allied with Russia.
Venice has just 10000 men on Corfu, 22000 in its home country but 56000 on Crete. We will just sit and dont move. In this war, we wont be troubled by Russia, Russia will be far to busy with Sweden and wont go to the trouble to sail to our Balkan and Italian holdings. As for Venice, Venice holds large armies, but we will sit still. Let Sweden exhaust itself.

1791. Against France, we could use Sweden as an ally. Despite our loyalty to the alliance, our relation is still icy : -200. A large gift to the Swedish king moderately improves the relation.

The Spanish war
March 14: Spain declares war. Turkey and Sweden forgo their obligations. This brings us, together with Crimea, into war with Spain. Spain now has almost all its provinces raised to maximum fortification, except a number of its low income south American provinces, which are medium. We had hoped to use Aires as a base for a quick sweep of South America in case of a war with Spain. But with every province heavily fortified, this tactic wont work.

Slight miscalculation: Russia attacks us in Kurdistan. I completely overlooked a common border! Turkey attacks Venice with increasing larger armies. The Mughals send 31.000 men against the maximum fortress in Bologna in Italy. We capture and burn a series of Spanish trade posts in South America. Spain kicks us out of Oporto. Our fleets are chased away again and again. Spain storms Oporto but fails. Our counterattack against the demoralized Spanish army fails.

The siege of Bologna makes no progress at all. On 16 October, the Spanish forces defeat our armies in Aires in South America. The Spanish king refuses a peace offer of 500d.

In the East we fare slightly better, capturing Azerbeidjan.

In Italy, we storm Bologna, capitol of Emilia, and fail, 90000 Mughals and 60 guns are insufficient to take this fortress after half a year of siege. At the cost of 40000 lives and 20 guns, we cause nearly 8000 casualties.

1792.
On January 3, Russia accepts Azerbeidjan for peace. We accept.
Spain has left Aires, so we send our small army back and recruit new troops.

In March, Spain marches with a new army on Aires, defeats us and storms it. Spain gets a generous offer: Aires + 500d. CtD!

reload Jan 1 save.
Again Russia offers Azerbeidzjan on jan 3, but this time I refuse. Russia lifts the siege of Kurdistan defeats us in Azerbeidjan, and we march to Algra instead. Storming Volgograd with nearly breached walls succeeds but this is a victory in the Phyrric tradition: Of the 15000 men which stormed the 5000 defenders, barely 3000 survive.

We storm the walls of Bologna again on March 23, with 45000 infantry against 22000 defenders. While this battle still rages, Russia offers Azerbeidjan and Algra. I accept! The second attempt to storm Bologna ends with 27000 casualties on our side, and just 4000 Spanish lives.

Spain makes constant invasions in Istria, but our 30000 men army defeats them all. Spain has take Oporto and now tries his luck in Algarve. The Spanish army makes an unsuccessful invasion in Algiers, but later a large scale attempt in Algiers defeats our troops and lays siege to the town.
I offer Oporto and 500d, and Spain accepts.

This peace treaty, disadvantageous as it is, frees our hands for France.

On August 5, we send a letter to the King of France with our DoW. Our army in Europe has been decimated by the war against Spain, but we can still field two armies which are both sent to Savoy. The only reason for the war is the tiny TP in Colombo, which will be taken by a small force of less than 1000 foot. Our only ally, Crimea, forsakes its obligations.

On September 2, 3 critical days behind on schedule, we take Colombo and burn the wooden hut serving as a French TP. It looks like a great spot for a Mughal TP. On Sep 11. we lay siege to Savoy with an army of 86000 infantry and nearly 270 guns. It would be nice if we could capture this very rich province, but it is not our ultimate aim.
Our worries grow when on Sep 20 our old enemy Portugal declares war on us.

Oct. 8: France offers peace for 250g. I refuse. Attrition has worn the army in Savoy down to 73.000 men and 266 guns.
Oct 14: Persia declares war. We have 25000 men and 250 guns in the area, which march on Isfahan. Persia is joined by New Spain.

November 2: We establish a TP in Colombo!
Nov. 30: France starts to siege Helvetia with 57000 men.

France burns two of our north American trading posts.

On Dec 30, the mission is over.

With a glad heart I walked to my boss' office.
"Hi chief, what's the next job?" I asked. "This one went fine. All of Mughal and Indonesia are under Islamic control."
He raised an eyebrow.
"Furnace stoker 3rd class, that's what I promised you when you would fail."
"Failed? But I succeeded!"
"Thar is not under your control" he bothered to explain.
"That's not a part of India proper. Besides, there isn’t anyone living in that desert."
"I do regard it as part of India."
"But you never said it was. And even then my argument still holds, there isn’t anyone living there, so there's not a soul in India not under Mughal control."
He grumbled. "But there isn’t a trade post. Let alone a colony."
"You never asked me to do so. If you had, I would have set up a Trading Post there. I sent the last two groups of colonists to other provinces, I could have sent them to Thar if you had requested it. Well, my successor could easily remedy that."
He looked angry, but didn’t seem able to find the right answer.
"OK, perhaps you came close." he admitted. He sighed. "Don’t worry about your next job, plenty to do down here in hell..."
