"This mission will be hard, but not impossible. Your neighbours are aggressive, but not extremely, so you will have abundant chances to wage war on your neighbours.
The nation I entrust you with is called Mughal empire. Your predecessor has provided you with ample funds: 525 pieces of pure gold.
In addition, he has built up an incredible army of over 70.000 men and 70 cannon. He has succeeded in keeping infantry costs so low that you can recruit them for nearly nothing.
The country is extremely rich - use it to your advantage.

Your people are already fanatical about this new religion we have created. It will be your task to spread this throughout the Indian subcontinent. There are two smaller states - incorporate them. Spread our new religion east towards the region we call Indonesia. You will plenty of volunteers for the latter.
Simple, aint it?"

I nodded.
"You make it sound very easy. Then why did you start by calling this mission hard?"
He smiled the cruel smile I knew all to well.
"You can easily discover it when you are up on your job". He waited a few seconds before adding, with a studied careless tone in his voice:
"You will understand that with so many advantages, you have no excuse if you fail."

(Game Settings:
IGC : Hard / Aggressive (Not very hard/furious, my usual settings)
No fantasy or historical missions - instead my targets are:
a) Unify India
b) Spread Islam in India and Indonesia.
It is not my aim to beat Spain or any other country with regard to victory points.
Persia, Mameluks and Turkey have been defined as other major powers. )

cool. moghuls are the best of the "third world" to play, they are sooo rich, have a great position -- rich, annexable neighbours--
and get colonists and some leaders too.

by spreading islam to india, do you mean all of india and thereby try to force convert-- bringing the pop down to <5000 then colonise --- the "pagans" ?

i like the indonesian goal you have set ... and this time you'll get to FIGHT portugul !

I've never seen a non-european AAR in the EU forums before. This will be interesting to read. Do you plan on beating up on the Persians much?

rich, annexable neighbours--
Rich, yes. Annexable neighbours, yes and no. Moguls are sunni, while their neighbours are hindu/pagan. So peaceful annexation is out of the picture. Military annexation is the aim.

I've never seen a non-european AAR in the EU forums before
Most non european countries are pagan - pagans cannt do much in development. No fortresses, etc. Makes them really boring to play. I know, I tried Japan once.

by spreading islam to india, do you mean all of india and thereby try to force convert-- bringing the pop down to <5000 then colonise --- the "pagans" ?
I will try to answer this question in the story. (may take a few issues, but I wont forget).

Do you plan on beating up on the Persians much?
No, the Persians are not in my target list. But a short war would not be amiss - one got to think about ones back.

The India and Indonesia missions of course have a historical perspective. In the early part of the 16th century Moguls did conquer most of India. They were defetaed by guerilla tactics later and lost much of their influence.
But I think it was from this region that Islam spread to Indonesia, though it may have been through Arab sailors.

Report 1
I could and should have known. Things were not as easy as he had presented them to me. They never had been.
First, relations with all neighbours are at a solid rock bottom of -200. Great for waging war. Yes. NOT good if I want anything else.
Second, Mughal is rich in cash. Yes. But technological development is awful. It will take till 1560 before any advancement in
trade or infrastructure will have been made.
Third. These people know virtually nothing about the world. To our west are some uncolonized regions, starting with an unattractive desert. Then there is Persia. But we know only the tidiest bit of it. No way of knowing how powerful they are.
To our south are two neighbours. Each of their armies seem to rival the sum of ours. And our armies are dispersed through the realm.

Knowledge of our neighbours is limited. Three of their provinces we know about. We know they have more. But how many? I should send spies, but my means do not allow me to transfer that kind of knowledge to them. I can just influence their actions. Anyway: marching straight into the jaws of a foe of unknown superiority does sound like a great idea. For a false start, that is.
Fourth. I have a large army. Yes. I have been more or less ordered to march straight to war. Yes. But Mughal lacks the diplomats to declare war.

Than that 'new' religion. Islam they called it. Not new at all. had been in existence for already over 700 years. Well, it might come in useful. For the moment, I couldnt see its advantages. This kingdom belonged to the Sunni, our neighbours the Persians were Shiite. Our neighbours to the south were Hindu. No royal marriages possible. No political annexations.

Lets start with an inventory of what I DO have.
Cash 525, and an army as promised.
Provinces are :
Delhi (20/11/2.5/18),
Jaipur (11/10/2.5),
Aurangabad (12/9/2.3),
Madhya ( 5/9/2.3),
Agra (17/5.5/2.8)
Total cash yearly: 65.

Report 2
"Report. In detail. No excuses."
His voice showed no love. It never had. His desk was cluttered with reports. But still he wanted to hear my failures. I knew there were too many.
"The realm, and with it the 'new' religion of Islam, has been expanded both west and south."
"Good. All India is yours, now, I suppose?" The bastard knew it wasn't.
"For war, the country needed diplomats. So the first year, I had its rulers send colonists to Kutch and Kalat. Traders went to Bombay. They were successful.
5000 new troops were recruited in Kutch. After training, they were sent to Kalat, but were butchered on their way in Indus."
"Continue"

"In 1493 I had new traders sent to Indus. 15.000 men were recruited in Kutch for duty in Katar. Kutch was slightly fortified. Katar was slowly expanded throughout 1493."
"And the troops?"
"Were kept in Kutch"
"Continue."

"In 1494 we again tried to build up our presence in Katar. Both attempts failed."
"I do not tolerate failure. You know that."
I omitted to mention that I had maximized tolerance for the Shiite cult reigning in Persia. He would not have approved. Still, it had failed to improve relations with our western neighbour.
"In preparation for war, fortifications in Aurangabad were upgraded."
He frowned:
"Did you really consider this necessary? Surely by this time you had sufficient troops to attack both your southern neighbours?"
"Not yet."
"Misjudgment. I will remember this. Continue."

"The next year, in 1495, Kalat became a colonial town (1/3/1.5)."
"Why so much trouble for a tiny and poor province?" His question seemed to sound neutral and interesting. But I knew his motives were different.
"When waging war, I got to be sure of my back." I continued to prevent him condemning me again.
"A new trader was sent to Indus. 6 Merchants tried to gain some market share in our capitol, but just 2 of them mad it. They seem to have the richest market in the world, just cant trade anything themselves."
"No excuses. You know that."

"In 1497 "
"You omit 1496."
I sighed. I had whished to skip that incident.

"In 1496 Indus still had rebellious inhabitants, so we sent an army of 14000 men - who got driven away with horrendous losses."
He grabbed some papers from his desk, and read:
"According to this information there were only 3000 inhabitants! Surely you can do better than wasting 14000 valuable soldiers - having them butchered by 3000 farmers." His voice was filled with contempt. He smashed the papers down at his desk. Then he controlled himself again. "Defeats should not occur." He remarked dryly.

"In 1498 we declared war on Hyderabad. Nagpur was taken by storm. But storming the walls of Hyderabad failed - 5000 defenders caused 30000 casualties among the Mughal army.
A smaller force sieged Madhya Presh. When the main force, with a 100 cannon and 30000 infantry, stormed Hyderabad again, their capitol
was taken. However, the Hyderabadians had retaken Nagpur before we could take Pradesh, so from Pradesh we continued to Nagpur again.
This time the town was taken before they could liberate their capitol again. We didn't waste time and their sultan signed his abdication with a knife on his throat."
When I mentioned the knife on the rulers throat, he showed a smile for the first time. I went on:
"Casualties were horrendous: 93000 infantry and 16000 horse. We didn't mind the 4 cannon. But the war was over by October 9 of the same year."

"The new provinces are:
Nagpur (7/4/2)
Madya Pradesh (9/4/2)
Hyderabad (15/4.5/2.3)
The trade post in Bombay had been burnt.
Correct?"
He glanced up from his paper.
"Yes, correct" I admitted.
"Go on."

"In 1499 we had traders sent out to Bombay (successful) and Indus (failed again). Started rebuilding the army.
In 1500 we had the first colonists in Indus succeed in their mission!"

He thought for a second.
"There were rebellions in Persia. You could easily have taken their territory. You failed to do so."
"I purposely did not use that opportunity. I build up the army to conquer India, as you had ordered me."
"I do not remember ordering you to use your army. And when you had an army, you squandered it by assaulting an enemy town and you did only half the unification of India I demanded."

"I am certain that next time I will be able to report a new expansion of Mughal territory towards the south."
With that, I escaped from of his office.

I considered myself lucky. I still held my job. I had not informed him that among the booty in Hyderabad we had discovered 40 cannon. Very worthwhile for a nation which can not produce any themselves. I had also 'forgotten' to mention the maps in the Hyderabad palace, which had opened up the entire Indian subcontinent to us.

Report 3
This would be a very tough talk. I reread my written report before I entered the office of my boss:
This report contains a detailed list of all actions taken in the period 1501-1510. All actions have been taken with the goals of the mission in mind.
1501.
Colonists are sent to Indus but they do not succeed. A trade post in Ganghes is established. We reinforce the army to prepare for war against Mysore.

1502.
Two bailiffs are promoted to tax collector.
1800 Portuguese arrived in Goa, lead by Gamoens. I take this very serious. They are the first representatives of our enemy. So we beat them in an attempt to establish a trade post there. Both ours and their attempts to establish a trade post in Goa fails.

1503.
The fortress is Nagpur is upgraded. A new Portuguese trade post attempt triggers a revolt and Camoen dies.

1504.
Attempts to establish trade posts in Goa and Manira fail. In the west, we hear news about a country called Turkey which declares war on the Mameluks - another country we know by name only.
Reinforcements are recruited.

1505.
15000 men recruited.

1506.
Fortress upgraded in Hyderabad. A war with Mysore will take much longer if they can easily counterattack.

1507.
We recruited troops.

1508.
We succeeded to upgrade the trade post in Bombay to a small colony. We recruit more troops.

1509.
The Uzbeks declare war on Persia. The Uzbeks are our least enemies. (game: relation with Uzbeks is -187, the best relation we have!).
There are numerous rumors about revolts in eastern Persia. I conclude that if Persia has both internal unrest and a strong external foe, it is in serious trouble. I set up one of the leading imams to hold a sermon, which I take the liberty to reproduce in part here:
'Ye people of Moghul! Allah has chosen you and you alone of all the people on this continent to server him! And what have you done with this privilege, I ask?
Have you spread the holy Q'ran throughout the people? I do not answer this question, answer it yourself.
To our west are heretics. They falsify the teachings of our most sacred religion. What have ye done against them?
Did you send them imams to teach them the true Q'ran? Did you send them the word, that they should repent from their erronious ways?
If they do not listen to the word should they not listen to the sword?
Did you send them the sword? When, ye privileged people, will you send them the sword?'

After this sermon, feelings were aroused so much that the ruler Baburid declared war right away. The army was ill prepared, but
Baluchstan, Mekran and Hormouz, held by rebels, fell in quick succession.

The strategic necessity for this war arises from the need to fortify our western border. It is better to hit them when they are weak, else they will hit us when we are.

1510.
Balucht however is held by the Persians themselves and falls after three failed assaults. Our army marches on to the Persian capital Isfahad.
Isfahad turns out to be besieged by Uzbeks. So our troops joined them in the siege of this important trade center."

I looked it over. It was not strong enough by far. To much time had been wasted with settlements. Mysore had not been taken, not even attacked. He would certainly object to that. And I had no answer. I had not fulfilled the explicit mission he had set me. Worse, I had no definite successes in the war against Persia. A war that fell outside my mission, even though he had hinted at it himself in our previous meeting. Still, I had to report. With trembling hands I knocked on the door of his office. No reply. I knocked again. Again no reply.
I opened the door, his office was empty. I slipped in, dropped my report on his desk, and hurried to go back to my duties. It had been a narrow escape. My boss is not easy for those who fail him.

report 4.

"Report!" The face and voice of my boss both spelt T H U N D E R.
"In 1511 Moghul troops took Isfahan in December. In an effort to concentrate on my main mission, I offered Persia peace for Balucht, Hormouz and Mekran. They refused.

During 1512 we continue to siege Awhaz, and the Uzbeks joined us. Shoulder by shoulder we stormed it. The Persians then decided to surrender Kerman to the Uzbeks in exchange for peace.
I had hoped for three provinces. But two months later, I settled with the Persians for their two richest provinces we had taken: Balucht and Hormouz. Losses had been comparatively minor: just 30.000 men in three years of fighting. (game : total is now up at 122000 infantry and 17000 cavalry).

The year 1513 found us at peace. We rebuild the army in India. The second Portuguese attempt to built a trade post in Goa was successful."
"The Portuguese are servants of our enemy. You burnt it, I suppose?"
"Not yet. They trade, that's all. Besides, I have a purpose with them.

In 1514 I recruited fresh troops.

In 1515 "
He interrupted me, groaning:
Don't mention that year. A disaster for our European efforts."
"Well, we recruited more troops to prepare for war the next year. That was in 1516. We quickly took Deccan, after which they offered it for peace. I had the offer decline, but regretted it next year. They had 66.000 riders under arms, and crunched us at Bangalore. But we regrouped and finally threw them out.

That took us most of the year, and throughout the first quarter of 1517 184 cannon constantly bombarded the walls of this small fortress without doing any damage. I suspected treachery, but couldn't find any. Who did you assign them?"
I had hoped to surprise him, but he waved my question away.
"Report! I ask the questions!"
"Well, it took months to storm it twice. In September their capitol Mysore was taken and their realm incorporated in the Mogul empire."
"So now all of India adheres our new religion?"
"That depends on your interpretation." I answered. "Central India is under Islamic control. Not all individuals do, but Central India is under Islamic government. According to the info I was able to look up, this means they are part of the Uma, the Islamic world of peace."
He nodded. "That is sufficient. Use force and exclude others from giving witness in court" He grinned. "Simply propagate the point of view that every non believer is untrustworthy. People will slowly convert."
It was one of the few times I had ever witnessed that he did not scold me. I must admit I was very surprised.
I continued:
"Then there is the matter of the 'wild regions'. They are still Hindu. I can not conquer them."
"What do you plan?"
"Partly I can colonize them."
"I don't like building things up. Except arms. But in this case you have my permission. And for the rest?"
"That's where the Portuguese come in. I intend to let them settle, than attack."
He sniffed.
"When you can not attack their home country, they won't yield. Its bad to be in war when you can just try to fend of their attacks."
"Actually, I do have my plans for that."
I went on:
"In 1518 we doubled our settlement in Bombay from 300 to 600 people. In 1519 we again expanded the settlement in Bombay. But we also increased trade in Delhi.

In the last year, in 1520, we further expanded settlement in Bombay. We also recruited new troops."
"What are your plans next?"
"You know that each one of our kind excels in treachery. So not revealing to much about plans is second nature to us. For the moment,
can we conclude that we fulfilled the first part of my mission?"
"Yes. But do try to get those native provinces in your realm."

Report 5
He looked over the brief report:
1521. Recruit troops. Expand settlement in Delhi.
1522. Murder population in Parlakimedi. Two groups of merchants fail to establish themselves. Expansion of market share in Delhi.
1523. Expansion of fortress in Balucht. New troops in that region. All investments are switched from infra to trade.
1524. Start trading in Isfahan. Persia declares war on Uzbeks. We grab the opportunity to declare war on Persia again.
1525. Isfahan slowly falls due to methodological siege.
1526. Awhaz and Basrah fall due to siege. Persia offers these two for peace and we accept.
1527. Upgrade fortresses. Two tradeposts attempts in Parlakimedi.
1528. Invention of monopolies. Automatic sending of merchants.
1529. Built defenses in Kalat.
1530. Built defenses in Bombay. Failed mission to Parlakimedi.

"You should look over that last sentence." he said. Our boss does not tolerate failures."
"You are right" I quickly changed it into:
1530. Built defenses in Bombay. Colonization of Parlakimedi not successful.
He should not have read my report, but I had been careless and dropped it besides my plate. While I was away to get some more kawah, he had picked it up. I didn't like him knowing what I had done. Gossip, blackmail and treachery are all to common among our kind. He never had told me what his responsibilities were. Now he knew what mine were, he had a slight advantage over me.
"You aren't doing too badly" he remarked.
"No, not bad" I agreed. "But you know our boss. He always wants more. What are you doing?"
"I got a commission to create a general war in Germany. Will take a century, but with the recent activities of our enemy there I suppose it is unavoidable."
"I heard something about it. What did the enemy do?"
"Let's not speak about it. Works of over a millennium of corrupting got lost by a simple monk. My predecessor got what he deserved for his neglecting of details."
I shivered.
"Your boss is in a terrible mood" he warned me.
"I have a secret weapon." It was a boast, but he didn't need to know that.
"What?
"If I tell you, it's no longer secret" I smiled.
I didn't need to tell him I had brought a detailed map.

Report 6
I handed him my report:
1531. We upgrade the defenses in Kalat. The colony in Parlakimedi is sucessfully expanded to over 200 people.
1532. Trade expansion in Delhi.
1533. Trade competition in Delhi. Upgrade of colony in Parlakimedi to 300 people.
1534. Three failed colonization attempts in Parlakimedi are followed by replacement of the responsible vizir.
1535. 4 promotions of bailiffs to tax collectors.
1536. Upgrade fortresses in Kalat.
Persia declares war. In the field we suffer, I must admit, several defeats. Lut (6000 Mughals vs 800 Persians) and Awhaz (14000 Persians vs 27000 Moguls). Our morale is strong, theirs very strong. Persis (9000/700/37 vs 1100/1200/7) is another defeat. Still, Hamad is taken.
We siege Isfahan with 14000 men and 168 cannon. It is yielding very slowly, certainly compared with Ahwaz, which the Persians siege with 11 cannon, 7300 cavalry and 8000 infantry, and which is going down nearly as slow.
1537. The Persians offer Hamad for peace when their capitol falls, a peace offer we happily accept, as they seem to recruit troops faster than we do.
The Uzbeks invite us for a military alliance. They have always declined our offers of such an aliance, so we happpily accept their suggestion.
1538. Colonization of Parlakimedi.
1539. Colonization of Parlakimedi.
Uzbek asks us to honour our alliance when Persia attacks them. We suffer a major setback in Persis (19000/1000/74 vs 3000/4000/0).
We siege of course Isfahan, then continue wit Persis. The Uzbeks have taken Lut. Then the war stalls. Again we loose several field battles.
1540. The war with Persia continues. Slowly, so very slowly, city after city is taken by siege. Several attempts to storm cities fail (24000I/0C/103A is insufficient to storm 5000 defenders). They refuse all our peace offers.
1541. They refuse our 3 province peace offers. But when we lower our price, they do agree and we gain Iraq and Tabriz. The Uzbeks fight on.
1542. The exhausted Persians surrender Persis to the Uzbeks.
1543. We rebuilt part of our army.
1544. Fortification of Tabriz. Merchants to Delhi. Troops in newly gained Tabriz.
1545. Fortification upgrade in Bombay. New fort in Parlakimedi.
1546. One of our armies enters Berhampur, to ease colonization we simply exterminate its population. After this, it is easy to establish a trade post in Berhampur.
1547. We construct our first fleet in Kutch. Fortress upgrade in Parlakimedi. The trade post in in Berhampur is expanded to a colony.
1548. More ships! Market share in Delhi continues to increase.
1549. More ships! Market share in Delhi continues to increase. Colony in Berhampur increases.
1550. Keep trade up in Delhi. Expand colony in Berhampur. Build ships!
He didn’t need more than a minute to read it. Who he is? My boss, or course. That infernal source of misery to his subordinates. Like me.
"When will you use this fleet to colonize Indonesia?"
"I can not yet answer this question."
"You failed to throw out the Portuguese." It was not a question.
"I repeat I have my purpose with them."
"Despite the period of twenty years I gave you, you haven't achieved much in the area of colonization. Just Parlakimedi and a start in Berhampur".
I remained silent. I had no defense. I had stopped colonization during the wars. And the number of colonists had dropped to one/year.
"Still, I will not punish you this time. Not yet. I might even say I liked that genocide in berhampur. But continue with the utmost urgency. Our enemy stroke again at low level, in 1546 in France this time. We cannot yet calculate its consequences, but my colleague in Europe has already put his best gal on the job to exterminate its followers."
He hesitated. He seemed to be uncertain - one of the few times I have ever seen him that way. He walked up and down his office.
"Do not misunderstand me. I A M thoroughly dissatisfied with the peaceful path you have chosen. In twenty years you have fought just 2 wars. None of them were initiated by you."
"But these wars were very bloody ones." I defended myself. Losses on our side now total over 320.000 souls. And than I suspect that casualties among the Persians and Uzbeks were of the same order of magnitude."
He rubbed his hands. "Well, that is the misery I like to see. But can't you pull Turkey into the conflict? There seems to be something wrong with our man in Turkey. I'd appreciate if you could sort things out."
"What's wrong with him?"
"That's what you will have to discover."

Report 7
1551. From now on the market share in Delhi is a matter which requires our continuous attention.
1551-1557: Colonization of Berhampur. The colony was started as a trade post during the previous period. It was build up till 400 inhabitants, while we restocked colonists. When 600 people were available, we rapidly expanded the colony till it had 1000+ inhabitants.
Possession of this colony adds to our financial potential and should contribute to our potential for warfare.
1551-1553: For themMasterplan, we need fleets. We start construction of a fleet in Kutch.
1553-1555: Construction of a refinery in Deccan.
1553. Military alliance with Uzbeks renewed.
1555. A big war starts between Turkey assisted by various minors vs Austria and Hungary. In september, Hungary pays 76d. for peace, with which the war ends.
As soon as its over, Turkey declares war on Mameluks. Turkey gains a single Mameluk province and a province from Oman.
1556. Akbar rules Mughal empire. (ooc: very glad I got through Humayuns rule without problems - he is often a considered a weak, addicted ruler. His government was plagued by internal / external warfare. When his rule started, I was plagued by nightmares of a repeat of the persian civil wars).
Trade level advances to High baroque (Level 5).
1558. We generate a wave of promotions of bailiffs to tax collectors. In a coordinated effort they reduce inflation to 0%.
1558-1559. Persia declares war on the Uzbeks, the Uzbeks call for our assistence. We declare war. Our troops march to Lut & Isfahan and start sieging it. We make good headway. Uzbeks arrive to assist, and their king takes over command. When Lut falls, they control it. Same for Isfahan. Then they sign a peace treaty, receiving Lut +125d.
1559. 7000 English arrive in Pondicherri. They leave in 1559.
1560-1565 Defense increases in Berhampur and Hamad. Rebuilding the army, which needs much more troops now we have three distinct areas to defend.
1562-1568: Turkey fights a series of short wars against the Mameluks, who escape each year by paying gold.
1563-1570: Colony in Cuttack. We use the same pattern as before: assemble 600 colonists, first establish a tradepost, than a colony, and expand it till 300 people. Than wait again till we have 600 people waiting to emigrate, and built up the colony to 1000+ people, after which it will support self-sustained growth.
1569. Infrastructure improves to High baroque(Level 5).
1570. In all provinces created as colonies, mayors are promoted to governors, to improve population growth.
1570-1572: Defenses in Bangalore, Mysore and Cuttack are improved.
1573-1575: Succesful trade post in Howrah.
1574. Start trading again in Isfahan. Trading post in Howrah. We gain a monopoly in Isfahan, which is sufficient reason for the Persians to boycot us.

Of course it was in evitable that a report over a period of twenty five years was longer than one. But by summarizing years by topic I had shortened it considerably.
"Your report is too short!" my boss snapped.
"I thought you would like the new format"
"I want details! You are hiding something!"
"I have reported all essentials."
He grinned:
"My man in Uzbek played a nice trick on you". It was a statement, but it felt like an accusation. Our kind always tries to chreat, and should be trained not to be taken in by cheap tricks.
"I see you also mentioned the Tukish wars against the Mameluks. Something wrong, you think?"
I nodded.
"It certainly seems that way. They once fought a war against Hungary and Austria. But many people feel they fought with only half their heart in it. On the contrary, they fought several short wars against the Mameluks."
"Try to change that situation."
Wondering how I could achieve that, I left his office.
