Hi, I havent found a clear answer yet.
If the answer is no, is there a way to completely delete old ship templates to avoid the modela spam?

Thank you

If you don't have any ships of the template you're modifying in service or construction, it gets overriden by the new design. If you do, the old one stays and a new one gets created.

You can set any design as obsolete and the list filters it out by default. There's no way to directly delete a design that I know of.

What I do to avoid getting confused by small modifications (a radar, a new model of AA, etc) is to name these variants with the same name plus a number.
For example: Kiel Class / II Kiel Class / III Kiel Class (the number goes in front so I can see it easily in the task force lists)

I do similar to you Apparadoxchik. I usually put the main mod item in front. A CL variant with aircraft is something like R/Chicuma. Radar CV is R/Soryu. Destroyer escorts - DE/Momi.
