I would love to see a multiplayer campaign. And I think that it would boost the population of players and life of the game.
The reason why I love the game as a singleplayer game but dont even bother with multiplayer is simply that I'm not invested in the multiplayer games. In singleplayer I'm invested. I care if my pilots are hurt or killed. I look forward to capturing my next mech. I refit my mechs all the time to gain a small advantage on the desert biome I'm travelling to.
In single battles it is instead drop-rush in-shoot some stuff-die or win-repeat. No reason to fall back with a damaged mech to avoid losing it. It is a quick slug-fest. Kill or be killed and then on to the next game.
I would love to take some of those singleplayer elements and add them to multiplayer. Shogun 2 did a great job at this so we all know it can be done.
As a rough draft I would suggest (and this is just me quickly writing down whatever I come up with at the moment):
Take whatever you like from that list. But the real issue is that I want a multiplayer campaign!

-Use the current star-map. It is good enough and there is no reason to change a good part of the game.
-We play as a mercenary company, not an empire. So we battle over fame and fortune. Fortune will buy you new mechs and parts and Fame is your ranking.
-When starting your company, you get a set amount of C-bills to buy 6 mechs. For each drop you then choose 4 of those 6.
-You also get to create some custom Mechwarriors for your own company.
-In each system you will have a Fame value. Reach a certain number of Fame in a system and you will be awarded bonuses or even mechs.
-Fame will decay over time if you dont battle in that system. The rate of decay will be dependent on your Fame in nearby systems. Low Fame close by will increase decay, making you think more strategically where to operate. Low total Fame will decrease decay to encourage new players to start. Fame will increase when battling in a system. It will increase more if you win. (time is counted in turns, not real-time)
-Between campaign turns you get to refit your mechs or buy new ones as well as spend XP on your pilots.
-So say that you have your MP company. You look on the map and see that if you win one more battle in system A you will get a discount at buying a Centurion. You choose that system to do battle in.
-You get placed in a que to a random battle to be matched up with someone with a similare Fame value.
-You get to see the name of the opponent company, and maybe even get shown their single most used mech (would be fun is we got to see the one mech each company is known for fielding). You are also told the biome and the mission. Both player give a bid on how much to commit to the battle (in C-bills or tons) and the game then take a random numbet between those bids. That is the limit for the game. You then select 4 of your 6 mechs and their pilots.
-You do battle. A pilot that is incapacitated lose XP. If it have no unallocated XP to lose, the pilot will get low spirits the next couple of campaign turns. Damaged mechs will need to be repaired, costing C-bills after the battle. A disengage-point will need to be added to both sides to enable withdrawing damaged mechs.
-Post battle, the player that won the objective or is last man standing is declared the winner. C-bills is distributed with a boost for winning. C-bills is withdrawn for repairs. And both players get some Fame in their respective selected system (yes, even if you lose you get Fame, just not as much).
The aim should be that your Fame should be limited by your ability as a player. A better player will be able to maintain more Fame on the campaign map but all should reach an eventual equilibrium.
Your C-bill income should limit your mech choices. Bigger mechs are more expensive to maintain. Maybe even put a limit of how much the mechs in your 6 mechbays may be worth together (or total tonnage). If the developers like a slow and static game then put a high limit. Personally I enjoy a more mobile game so would say about 40 million C-bills or about 350 tons. That is an average of 6,6mililon C-bills/mech or 58 tons/mech. Placing the average around a heavy mediun to a light heavy should give a game with manouvers but still have room for some really big mechs.
