Moving Courts

Will you be able to move your court (capital) to a new province.

If I become king of France (and wasn't before) can I move my capital to Paris?

If I am the owner of one small german province, and a heck of a lot of piety, and the crusade I'm in nets me Jerusalem, can I move my court there and become king of Jerusalem?

What if my dynasty divides due to low amount of claimants, and I have little claim on current capital province, but better on another one?

If I start out as far north as I am able, and then manage to gain a nice rich southerly province (Novgorod?) and assimilate them culturally, can I move my court there, to my richest province, or must I remain in my paltry, distant, backwater, cold corner of the map?

What if I have expanded a bit, and the mongols/turks/neighboring lords come and take my old capital province and keep it, can I move my capital to the safe lands further away?

Was the entire idea of a "capital" city even relevant for this time period? Wasn't the capital and the court wherever the lord was at the time?

Depends which country, and which time period. In the beginning, in Poland there weren't real permanent capital, but in the end, Krakow was true permanent capital.

That's probably true. Thinking about it, England didn't have much of a "capital" in 1066, but London sure was it by 1453.

On the other hand,orthodox kingdoms rarely moved their courts.In fact,aside from the move of 313AD,Byzantium-for example-never moved its capital voluntarily away from Constantinople.

Slightly off-topic but I thought Alexandria was considered as a capital during the reign of...can't recall for the life of me. Your point stands however, Byzantium at least never moved its capital voluntarily. I'm not too sure about the other Orthodox states.

I think it is because Byzantium wasn't really at all a feudal state, it was much more centralized than the kingdoms of western europe.

Yep IIRC during the Angevin reign, neither Rouen, London or (Aaahhh, what was the other city?) were of more importance over the other.

So do you think there will be no capital province at all, or that one will get a capital province at a certain tech-advance, with associated benefits (and some minor penalties)?

Wrong. Winchester was the acknowledged capital of England before the 12th century, when London slowly took over.

I don't know about Alexadria, but I know that Constans II attempted to center the Byzantine Empire at Syracuse. After a few years there, his court got so upset that they assassinated him and subsequently moved back to Constantinople.

He began to build the Tower there, and like all English kings was crowned at Westminster Abbey, but the old Saxon capital at Winchester continued to be the administrative center of the kingdom. However, it was with such actions by the Norman conquerors that started the change of capitals; they really didn't like Winchester with its long Saxon history and much prefered less historic London (well not very historic during the Saxon period; Roman London is a different matter). The Nordic kingdoms were late in developing capitals. The court rather moved along with the king to several "kongsgårder" (royal estates).

However, by 1167, Bergen was made capital of Norway by king Magnus Erlingsson (the first king to be crowned by an Archbishop).

that is, you can move capital and you would probably very much want to do that to (a) be closer to economical center of your realm and have lesser amount of taxes lost on the way (b) be closer to the regions of war to be able to decrease travel time for royal armies.

The most likely should be cost in $$$ and temporary lapse in some sort of control. (Taxes, mustering, whatever)

Wasn't Gneizno considered the capital during the early period?
