Strange this: I live in U.K. and can obviously obtain Channel 4 on my TV. So why is this blocked for the U.K?
Is there another Ch. 4 somewhere?
I still haven't seen the entire film, but I really like the tercio battle from Alatriste from what I've seen on Youtube. Other thing that pop to mind is The Borgias.

Yeah. Alatriste had some great fight scenes. Really authentic. Boring movie though in my opinion. I can't remember what it was about. Aragorn in Spain looking grim and putting holes in people. Something like that. At one point it rained.

Someone should make an entire movie about the Reconquista with Vigo Mortensen as the lead for the sole reason of him shouting "For Aragon!" at least once in the movie:rofl:

I fully endorse this endorsement of Barry Lyndon.
I don't think that movie will ever get old to me. I adore this movie.
Also, Hugus mentioned War and Peace. I sort of agree, but it depends on which one you watch. I really can't get into the 1956 version even though is has the lovely Audrey Hepburn in it. Bondarchuk's 1967 version is, in my opinion, a far, far better version of it.
Had to go check that. I was referring to 67's version, which is, honestly, the only one I knew of. Learned that there's a more recent version: a 2007 Russian-French-Italian-German production. (here) Will have to check it out

Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (how awkward Klaus Kinski in fact was that kind of monster. i highly recommend german version with subtitles) - dawn of colonization of S. America
Barry Lyndon (!) - Ireland, England, Prussia and Europe a true masterpiece
With Fire and Sword (Ogniem i mieczem) - Poland, Ukraine and the Wild steppes (again a version in polish with subtitles highly recommended, also a briliant theme there)
The New World (extended cut) by Terrence Malik - long but never tiring, founding of Jamestown and first contacts with natives (yeah yeah, it's bloody Pocahontas but a movie too well made)
Mongol - yes, too early but still a cool movie about the rise of the Great Khan (never play it other way than in Mongolian/Chinese languages with subtitles)

It can be incredibly difficult to find, but the 1982 film, Le Retour de Martin Guerre is a fantastic film based on a true case of "identity theft" in 16th century France.
Part of its greatness (other than being a stellar story in its own right) is the fact that it attempts to really portray what life for the peasantry at the time would have been like... a far cry from the lifestyles of the privileged classes that can be observed in other works taking place in the same period such as "The Tudors" or "The Borgia". Princeton University Professor Natalie Zemon Davis (and author of a book by the same name, on the same subject) worked as a consultant on the film, lending her expertise in an attempt to give it as much historical authenticity as possible.
Great story, great acting, and great suspense (if you don't already know the ending). Watch it and reflect, these are the lives of the poor men and women who fund, feed, and enlist in your world-conquering armies!

The Borgias is very good except for Iron's frequent over acting. He has been playing the stage for far too long!
