So I picked up CK2 and some of the more important DLC for a buddy of mine (cuz I'm AWESOME) and he's about 350 hours in when he noticed something odd about the coats-of-arms. When he started a new game in 769 and moused-over the shield of his King, it had a date in the future. Upon some investigation, it seems that the shield displays the historical death date for those characters that are from actual history (with a few exceptions such as Ragnar's father.

So... um... how long has this been there? And what is its purpose other than just to give the neat historical info?

That should be the date when your character got the title in game.
Looks like a bug then.

Ahh! I'll ask around and see who else has the same experience. See... that's what I thought it was, but my friend was adamant that it was happening, so I looked into it and sure enough, everyone that was a historical person has their death date pop up on the mouseover, and everyone who is ahistorical had 1 January, 769 pop up.

Anyone else having this?

Bug.

When you start a new game, the game executes history up to 1066 (the original start-date). Then, when you select an earlier bookmark it executes history backwards. When executing history it notes the most recent change to display, and when executing history backwards the most recent change is in the future. So the date you see is the date that they lost the title (generally due to their death).

If the title isn't held by anyone at game-start a random character is created and given the title, so the most recent change is the start-date.

That shouldn't be the case anymore since 2.5, as history isn't kept in memory before start (as i recall) to prevent exactly what you describe.
Unless if i recall wrong what was changed in the patch in this regard.

Konstantinos (70501) is emperor twice. maybe that's causing it:

Code:
741.6.18={
    holder=70501
}
742.7.1={
    holder=145225
}
743.11.2={
    holder=70501
}
775.9.14={
    holder=70500
}

@yonderboy

Did he and you start your game on 2.5 or 2.4 ? If before 2.5 than it is probably indeed simply what Silver Wizard said.

Just checked myself (on 2.5.2.2) and this is still there.

So I take it this is one of those bugs I simply never noticed?

And, if 2.5 was supposed to fix it, should I report it?

Just go ahead and report it. Can't hurt.
I might have recalled another fix or what it did/does and this might be unrelated, so just report it as is.

I've noticed it before (and still) as often I'm looking to change inheritance laws which requires a ten year reign so you do check for an accession date and then find this. Annoying but you can look at when the previous holder died/got usurped etc. instead in the history of the title to get the info in many cases.
