Let's start with the criticism: I feel like there are too few mounted units in this game. I might be missing one or two here, but it's basically most scouts, the tier 3 units of Feudal and Dark culture, the Tyrant Knight, and... well, that's as far as I get. And heroes can be mounted, I guess.

I'd like to see a non-scout non-T3 mounted unit for most if not all cultures, and a few more across various Tomes. Maybe such that not having a mounted unit is the exception, e.g. for the Mystic culture or something.

Having said that, one thing I do really like is the concept of taking a mounted adaptation gives some cultures an extra mounted unit - I'm currently brainstorming a mounted Fury focused build, for example - and I'd love to see that expanded on some more.

Oh, and one thing I'm missing slash suggestion I want to make: Cat mounts! Either as adaptation or as default trait. I want my cat-riding cats, just like in AoW 2. Honestly, the Cat Archer might just have been my favorite unit from that game, mounted, capable in both ranged and melee, and interesting design.

They need more variety in many aspects of the game. I hope with patches and expansions this game will really come to it's full potential. I love the game, but it does have it's issues.

Does anyone know if unique mount racial trait also changes researchable units into mounted or it affects only cultural units?
I know that:

Feudal - don't receive any additional mounted unit, as they already have tier3 cavalry;
Barbarians - tier2 archer becomes mounted;
High - tier3 battlemage becomes mounted;
Industrious - tier3 shieldguy becomes mounted;
Mystic - tier3 battlemage becomes mounted;
Dark - same as Feudal, none;

And that's all? Seems like a waste of a racial trait slot. Only wolf mounts with melees looks good (+20% dmg per adjacent friendly unit with the same mount) for Dark and Feudal, and may be Industrious. But what about researchable units?

I’ve been thinking that we need a nomad culture. Barbarians are kinda like Vikings. It’d be cool to have a culture based off scythians/Huns/mongols. Tier 3 horse archer unit, supported by tier 2 lancer cavalry.

It changes cultural units and one single tome unit - Tyrant Knight. And Tyrant Knight getting your racial mount is build into itself - you take Unicorn Mounts and Sneaky (+25% flanking damage) as racial traits (choose whatever looks your want, through I think elves fit this combo the best), take Tome of Beast as one of two tier I tomes (for it's hero skill that gives another 25% flanking damage and it's spells that boost your cavalry and make enemy vulnerable), then take Tome of Subjugation as first tier III tome. When you get Tyrant Knights apply simple tactics - phase and backstab.

Ironically, it feels like Dark and Fuedal cultures get the least benefit from the mount traits, since there's so much overlap between their tier 3 units and Tyrant Knights.

Interesting benefit I noticed, though: normally the Tyrant Knight's Sword and Shield doesn't give you a mount when you select it, but your ruler will get the special mount from the mount trait even so. I assume the same is true for the Necromancer's Orb.

Ah yes, more mounts would be great. I have high hopes for Primal Fury dlc, maybe even Mammoths? That said as soon as I'll get my Dragon Leaders and Lizzos in Dragon Dawn I'll probably forget everything else, no mounts needed thank you (though Lizard mounts sound tempting) :D

Ooooh, lizard mounts. That's another good one!

Huh, and maybe we can get AoW 1's frog mounts back, while we're at it?

Elephant mounts? Bear mounts? Would a flying mounted unit trait be too strong? If not, eagle mounts could be a thing.

Lack of mounts wouldn't be so bad if the scout could be used as an actual unit in combat somehow.

That'd be counter to their design, though. Scouts are meant to be quick, cheap units you can build a few of in the early game to explore the map. If you make them useful in combat, you need to make them more expensive in order to keep them balanced, which means you can't build them quickly in those first few turns.

Best to just add a few straightforward cavalry units, imo. Most would probably be Shock units, but I wouldn't mind seeing a mounted archer (as in, always-mounted, as opposed to mounted-only-with-trait) either.

Also, you could maybe do some creative stuff like a mounted support with touch-range abilities that uses their movement speed to move between your units in battle to keep them in the fight. On the other hand, it tends to be best to group your units up so the movement speed would often be unneeded.

If we're going by "AoW lore" here, we really need beetles, mamoths and frogs as mounts, ASAP! ^^

I agree with the OP, we need more mounted troops! ;P

Beetles! How could I forget about them?

I guess that makes the wishlist:
-Cats (maybe as a form trait that gives a special melee attack or retaliation, akin to the Cat Archer's melee attack from AoW2?)
-Frogs
-Mammoths (better than elephants btw)
-Beetles
-Bears
-Eagles (form trait that gives Flying to mounted units)

Also, while we're at it: I think we've got white and brown horses, but not black horses (apart from nightmares from the trait), that'd be a nice addition too. Would allow better recreation of e.g. Dark Elves. And I imagine it'd be relatively easy to add because you can just recolor the white or brown horses (or maybe I'm underestimating the effort required here, I'm not a game dev).

yep it feels bad that dark and feudal has less incentive for monted trait.
Any orb or "mountable" gear works, and not only for the ruler but other heroes of that race too.
And sadly no other mounted units from the trait (i would loved some horse archers, from nature tome, squires for knights horse arechers for dark for example ...)

They can be used in battle, you just need mount trait (except Nightmare Mounts) if you want to use them in battle. Just remember, there is only one enchantment to meaningfully boost scout's damage and it's in Tier V Nature tome.

I want to see a trait that does this:

Give the race the extra mount unit, but it's NOT a special mount. Just a regular one. And then give a small bonus to all mounted units. Maybe +10% damage, or maybe it could even be better than that.

It would also be cool to have a major transformation that puts all units of the faction on mounts, and gives them all evasive and heavy charge (for units that already have charge). Call the spell Rider Lords.

Also yes, I think scouts are overtuned to be a bit too weak. I would like to see them get at least +50% damage across the board.

I say this just because I want to be able to put a scout in my armies for the vision capabilities, but I won't because it ruins the army's ability to do combat.

Either that, or allow us to attach scout units to armies as some kind of strategy map only unit that don't take up a slot. Yes, we can move scouts separately, but it's just a bit of a pain to have a scout follow every army.

in the end game, my heroes end up all on special T3+ mounts anyway. but maybe if i end up doing the hero-build i am planning for a while there will be indeed a shortage (going a full stack of hero should be fun, but needs some time to make the 5-6 cities)

Hero cap is a soft cap. You just pay like, twice the cash for the recruit and then 30 gold upkeep, if you have enough gold income you can go totally insane on heroes.
