Bin wondering about mountain terrain and how it effects buildings, tried to find it on the forum but after some searching i got lazy.

Going to use Norwegian terrain as example.

Was trying to find maps of the terrain in Norway. Was hard to find.

Closest was this:

crusader-kings-3-war.jpg

Seems right as a mountain battle considering the area of inland Møre got much of this terrain:
76f4d375e22475c582a9af70421c29c6c81ed84e.jpg

Above is obvious hard for settlements.
However the end of fjords tend to have flat areas: but with limits

Even if there is much mountains in Norway you find places that have both flat and mountains:

norway_asset_import_dc4gfkrl2b_42c516d4-5056-9b11-669a4053e698f092.jpg

This is common for most of Norway.

So my question is how is Mountain terrain going to work when it comes to buildings?

Will a Norwegian, Scottish or Alpine area player get higher expense on buildings, reduced income from farming?

To my mind resources are most important when it comes to building expense. Import stone or wood or available locally. Someone who are used to live in mountains have no problem building in that terrain.
On the other hand farm fields as in corn is very much limited terrain. Livestock however are not that limited as they don`t need flat terrain.

Should there be penalty to all buildings or depend on what kind, any information on this?

(Sry if there is some bad English in there)

Different terrains are able to build different buildings with varying bonuses. Some buildings are shared between terrains, but there are unique ones for some terrains as well.
In the stream on Wednesday the capital of Leon could build normal farmlands as well as potentially hill farms that provided different bonuses.
Terrain also affects the progress of development as well. It will be easier to increase development in fertile farmlands versus the middle of a desert.
Finally terrain affects various parts of the combat system including combat width, advantage, army speed, and how well certain men at arms fight.

So to answer a couple of your questions:
So my question is how is Mountain terrain going to work when it comes to buildings?
Mountain terrain will have some unique buildings that offer better fort levels and defensive advantage, at the trade off of less taxes and/or levies.
I don't think we've seen the buildings screen for a mountain province yet so I'm basing this off of the hill province buildings from the second stream.

Will a Norwegian, Scottish or Alpine area player get higher expense on buildings, reduced income from farming?
I believe buildings won't cost more in the mountains, they'll just provide different bonuses to simulate the reduced income from farming.
Though I'm not sure if the number of building slots available in a holding is affected by terrain. We'll need to see more varied types of provinces to figure that out.

Should there be penalty to all buildings or depend on what kind, any information on this?
The terrain will apply a penalty or bonus to the progress of development. Since development directly increases the total amount of levies and taxes that a province produces, this somewhat simulates a penalty because places like the Nile Delta will develop at a faster rate than the middle of the Sahara Desert.

Makes sense you get less taxes from farming and i guess less levies due to smaller settlements. But iI wonder how they going to mix mountains with the sea. As of Norway living by mountains but travel on and living of the sea. Fish, Whales, Seals, shells etc. You were kind of desperate if you tried to travel on land that would take ages to go anywhere, while longships was the fastest transportation in medieval times.

I believe buildings won't cost more in the mountains, they'll just provide different bonuses to simulate the reduced income from farming.

That would be great. Lets see then :)

I get slower farming development due to smaller scale farming and to some degree smaller civic development due to smaller population. But when it comes to military i think you should give bonus to infantry development and penalty to cavalry. Not to mention how important ships was in places were travel on land was not an "smart" option.
Vikings was best known for Warfare, ships, trade and exploration and would be strange. If they developed slower in this things because of mountains then Norway would be still in the stone age. The Swedes at Paradox just gonna give their flat lands an advantage on us:eek::p

There is a penalty to cavalry in mountains. In the latest stream, they commented on the fact that their "pursuit" phase of battle was pretty poor due to cavalry not being good in the mountains.

EDIT: Btw, love the pictures of Norway!

Yes cavalry was close to useless in most of Norway beside farm muscle.
But looking outside battle the development of technology. I mean it makes sense Infantry gets an bonus and cavalry an penalty.

You focus on what works if its Huscarls, scottish Gallowglass or swiss pikemenn.

Thanks;)
