I know it's not possible to add lakes that are 'above sea level' in any way, due to how the game engine renders land and water, but perhaps it'd be possible to use a workaround of sorts with the terrain to get something that looks right?

It's a fairly simple edit on my part; add some 'lake' provinces to the map, then add a bluish texture to the map files and use that in the area. In all the map modes but Terrain, the game automatically colours the area dark blue to match all the other water sources, so it's only really noticeable if you're in Terrain mode AND zoomed in super close to the map.

...in short, it's a bit choppy, but if it's the only way to get these lakes into the game short of rebuilding the entire engine, maybe it's something to consider?

What they need is a flag that can be added to otherwise landlocked provinces that allows them to overwrite the automatic assignment of coastal or not, that way a player could build Fishing Villages, Ports or Shipyards - for example it would be cool to sail across Lake Peipus or Lake Ladoga to raid your enemies.

The only problem I've found in testing it so far is that if each lake is turned into an individual named province, the game treats it in the same way as a wasteland province, which throws a messy border outline around it and also means it changes colour if someone controls the provinces around it. If you use the same 'water wasteland' province that's used to fill up the empty sea areas of the map, you don't get this problem...but you don't get labels for each lake, unlike other lakes on the map. So it's ultimately a case of deciding which is more tolerable to you and going with that...

This looks... pretty good. Would love to see the Caucasus Lakes and Lake Qinghai finally make it into the game.
