Gave it a go and ended up in a situation where Japan still joined the Axis even after going for the non-aligned branch so was at war with the other Axis Powers meaning if I beat japan (which wasn't looking good without a navy or anything) I'd still be in a war with Europe. Any good tips from anyone who's played as them in WTT?

My main thought is beat Japan much faster; Aldra Hill series shows him as Manchuko beating Japan very quickly. (China took much longer)
Note that you don't need a navy at all; AI Japan will surrender as soon as they don't have anything left on Mainland Asia.

Another thought: It's probably much easier if Japan stays Fascist and goes down the War with China path. (Small problem; in this case (under 1.5.0) you have to retake some land that gets given by China unless it got changed in 1.5.1, but since China doesn't have any troops in it; that part is easy.)

I had good luck building up some motorized divisions to rapidly conquer Korea. No tanks supporting them, just pure rapid response.

Of course, go assertiveness ASAP so that you don't get called into Japan's war.

One very simple stratagem is build your forces until Japan takes Nanjing, take all the factories and bonuses you can muster through the Focus Tree and try to declare war when you see you have enough forces to overpower China: The Japanese Invasion colapses on itself quite quickly once you declare war on them , have at least three full/half full armies at the Mengkukuo front, the Beijing front and the Korean Front. Also garrison the frontier with Dalin with at least 3-4 Division to rapidly occupy(or contain) the port there.

Afterwards, vassalize the Warlords, each one thatd efects to you is divisions China will be using and another front they will divert forces to. (To avoid themrejoining the United Front, create your own faction and include to lock them with you) The war will much more manageable at that point. The only you should watch out for if for commie China joining the Comintern

Does AI Japan ever pick that (or the Democratic path that also does this) though? There's quite a few focuses from previous expansions that I've never seen the AI take.
I've seen them go democratic several times. Never seen them go communist tho

While a democratic Japan does give you your freedom for free and give you that sweet Militarism buff, it has drawbacks. For one thing, democratic Japan behaves like an Asian UK, in that they'll just start obnoxiously guaranteeing things, and trying to protect China from you. Also, you get Mengkukuo as a puppet, which means you must annex it through the autonomy system if you want to claim the mandate of heaven. Democratic Japan also keeps East Hebei and Dalian, so you're gonna have to attack him for those. You can totally just gank him for those provinces while he's still fighting the civil war, but you're still fighting Japan just like you would if you declared independence, only you don't annex Mengkukuo directly, and Puyi doesn't get the Nationalist Symbol trait.

Finally, you don't get the satisfaction of doing it the hard way. The "hard" way isn't even really that hard. Train a dozen 20 width cav divisions and then spew 20 width infantry until Japan has pushed China back to around the Yellow River. Declare independence, rush Korea with your cav, gank his ports and watch his army collapse. It's pretty straightforward once you know the strategy.

Oh, and once you're independent, all those "dick with Japan" focuses that the various China factions have now dick with you. So watch for that.

I actually saw the Japanese attempt to go Communist once, only the Communists couldn't finish the civil war. They had full control of the Home Islands except for Tokyo and just couldn't kick the Fascists out of the city.

The best strat I have found after a few manchu games is to join the war against china with japan and then declare independence, you can go grab all the ports on the mainland and garrison them, I recommend to build up a small cav force for that. By also being at war with China, you can use your focus for cores on china for getting manpower. As the Japanese and Chinese are at war with eachother you can easily push the Japs out of your territory while making slow gains on China, by around 39 you should be able to just push through everyone and Japan will just peace out, at this point killing China will take 0 effort

The non aligned branch ends up joining the Axis as opposed to the fascist branch which I find very weird, I mean the non aligned Japanese should also have the co-prosperity sphere option and the AI should take it as opposed to joining the Axis.
