And on the subject of religious "power", there are certain bonuses to being in an unpopular religion like Shia or Reformed. In particular, you can have all of the benefits of being DotF without any obligations to actually defend your faith from anyone.

Speaking of, I think that Shia is probably the best because of that combination of inherent power and the fact that, with Religious Ideas, you have CB on pretty much every possible neighbor. Catholic might have powerful bonuses, but dealing with claims is a drag compared to just holy warring absolutely everything.

Catholicism is the best hands down if you have a monopoly over the cardinals. In 90% of my games I go Protestant, as the idea cost reduction is tasty, and I don't feel like getting into a click war for the curia.

The second best IMO is Shiite. That morale bonus can't be beat, and since Shiites are scarce, that holy war CB will be used a lot.

For Eastern religions, it's Shinto. Similar to Shiite minus the 100% heir chance and the dual slider. Too bad it's only for Japan, as the other eastern religions suck beyond measure.

In fact, after 1.4, even Animism, Shamanism, and Totenism have better bonuses than Buddhism and Confucianism. I just find that ridiculous. I'd rather have a Shamanist Dai Viet than a Buddhist one

not confirmed for patch I suppose but its in the beta build being used in the dev multiplayer game. they want to add coptic christianity, ibadi, and Sikh.

Will they be redoing Eastern religions? Because Buddhism and Confucianism are the worst religions right now, even pagans have better bonuses.

The premier Shiite nation, Qara Qoyunulu (lol), can ally the Ottomans, as can Oman. In terms of potential Sunni allies, who else would you care about? Even once the Ottomans drop you, it's not like adding Algiers or Yemen is going to make a significant difference, although you might be able to do it regardless.

Bahmanis is Shiite and their ideas aren't horrible. At least they tech up quickly enough that you can plop a colony down next to a Euro power and westernize earlier. And if you do, and survive, the wealth of India and Indochina are pretty much yours for the taking.

While the curia bonuses are amazing, I don't really think of a diplomat, prestige and legitimacy when I hear the word 'powerful'. 35% Morale sure fits that description better as far as I'm concerned

+2 advisors, +1 free leader, and the tech bonus of the cardinals.

Then you have the HRE and the 8+ Decisions with Permanent Country Modifiers that the Catholics have access to.
