  • Europa Universalis III: Chronicles
Hi all,

after the Christmas break I decided to continue my first game in EU with Castille and by 1700 its not much left to do. I'm going to declare war on whole Europe once I have finished the battle for America and all the truces run out but there's really not much of a challenge left.

To sum it up my goals were:
- to spread the catholic idea in the whole world and to be the Curie Controller as often as possible,
- to have a contiuous coastline along the Mediterrean Sea,
- to get used to the colonial part of the game,
- to manage my economy.

My current income is around 13.000, next AI has about 2.000. My total army size is equal to the 3 best AI armies combined. So I think this game is over now.

What's next in your opinion? Which nation provides the biggest difference to Castille so I can learn something new? Maybe one in the HRE to get to know that system? Or one which is not in the western technology group?

Btw: My slider settings were mercantilistic, free subjects, narrowminded, and the rest in the common positions.

Opposite of Castille? That would probably be something like the Chagatai or Khazak hordes although those are probably too big a step for a newer player. Brandenburg or Bavaria-landlocked and in the heart of the HRE madness but significant enough to not get day 1 squished. Bohemia or Austria if you aren't really confident will give similar but significantly easier experiences compared to those two. Burgundy might also be a good choice for an early HRE learning game although it has the potential worry of the Big Blue Blob.

So you think being part of the HRE gives more new experience than being in a non-western tech group?

Lots of countries are more or less different to play. I am playing already for several months and there are still so many countries I want to play with (except France, Castille, England somehow). If you wanna a truly different experience from Castille try one of the japanese daimyos (take Minamoto if you want to have the easy path or the others to have more competition) or maybe Ming-China with its faction system. HRE is interesting because you will learn more about diplomacy and personal unions and Hordes are also quite different, but you should try to switch to monarchies asap because those succession crisis' will drive you mad at some point. Timurids -> forming Mughal Empire is pretty cool. If you are more experienced you can do it as Chagatai or sth like that as brifbates already mentioned it.

With non-western nations you will learn about westernization. It ain't that easy for new players and you will make mistakes in the beginning but it is really fun to bring some backyard non-european nations to global power.

If you played the whole way through, you've probably gotten a good feel for most of the mechanics, I'm thinking. But I'd try something land-based, just outside the western tech group, near the hordes: Moscow, Novgorod, Poloand, Byzantium, or Ottomans. All (excepts the Ottomans) have a reasonable shot at becoming HRE, if you want to go that route. There is something particularly satisfying about becoming HRE as Byzantium.
