It strikes me as odd that as the Holy Roman Emperor, you have more ways to interact with the member states than you do as an overlord of a vassal.
At very least I think you should be able to force a vassal to switch to your religion. Other things like giving up territory is also a possibility as well.
Also, message settings and notifications specifically for vassals, such as when they are besieged, have rebels spawn, the progress of revolts in their country, or when they engage in battles.
