I know that we can get max 1mln people in the city, which is ok for me, but what if we decide to "unlock" the whole map and build outside of those 9 squares? Can we then have more than 1mln people, or it just gives us more place to build but the population limit will stay the same?

I hope someone makes a mod to unlock that limit. Just like unlocking the tile limit.

How can you get one million people out of 9 boxes it seems to be too small of a land mass. It would have to be really condensed. Something like New York City or even more condensed. That would look unrealistic with skyscrapers everywhere right to the border of the squares. And then the rural land right beside it.
The one way you can pull that off is use the nine squares together. And for tiles that aren't being used. One third of it could be used for an inlet part of a lake. The rest will become all high hills and low mountain sides. An good eg is the Enodo demo real 2012 video. Check it out on YouTube. The airport is built off the side of the lake looking very realistic !

If you want to build a real New York, you need a map with dimension 35x35km.
This is with CSL unrealistic, because the map has max. 10x10km (after modding with all 25 tiles).

A real New York is at the moment only makeable with Cities (X)XL

Obviously it's just a game, 1mln people won't take as much space as a real life city.

I know its just a game but every person is accounted for and you have to place them in a home somewhere. Don't forget where they work and shop. That takes up some space in those boxes it's not all residential.
For CO to give us a million people with identity etc. is something else. That's a lot!
It will hard to keep tabs on a thousand of them on where they work and live and how many kids they have and where those kids go to school or work etc.
When you look at that in perspective that is amazing. The stats will have to equal up with the person's home and work place making this game amazing. Not like the other builder games having a false population count with no real identity of citizens.

Well, lets hope that modding will eventually be able to make maps as big as we want. Maybe even a DLC! Who knows. It depends on how much we want it.

What? Can we only have 999.999 inhabitants on our cities? Are you joking?

Every Cim is simulated. They have house, a car a job/school and (probably) a favourite store. Having one million of them simulated is very hard. 1 mill is already amazing.

If it does pass the one million mark I think they start to clone the Sims starting from firsts Sims up to a another million of them. And the computer system starts to overload and slow down.

That's good if it does that. At least we will be able to get more than 1,000,000. Does the game really do it that way?

I don't know its just my opinion. But if the computer simulator does duplicate a Sims persons identity. Complications could occur between Sim person number 1 and 1,000,001 slowing the system down.
Maybe the computer can keep the Sim person and families identifications but change each persons home ,work, school and leisure activities. Remember their not going to be living and working etc in the same place.
I'll say this again, I'm just giving you my opinion on this subject. It would be great if was possible thanks !!

Well, they did say that they are optimising the game for those 9 squares, but we can unlock the whole map with our own responsibility ;) So Im GUESSING that we can have more people but if it won't work properly, we can't get mad at them. The problem is, we don't know for sure if we can unlock only the terrain or also break the 1 000 000 pop. limit. Would be nice.
