I think war could really use some more tactical and strategic options in this game. It's such a large part of the game, but also hasn't gotten much love. I have a few ideas in mind at the moment. First, I would like to be able to garrison my army in whatever Holding that I desire. As long as the Holding is large enough and has enough supplies.
This could be a useful defensive option for a player who is smaller than their enemy and knows they can't win a pitched battle, at least not right away. But they may be able to outlast the enemy in a siege. There could also be an option to sally forth from your Holding and engage the enemy. If you wait long enough the enemy army may have suffered severe depletion from disease and attrition.
Also, I would like the ability to call forth the garrisons of my Holdings. This would make your Holdings very vulnerable, but could be an offensive option when you need more manpower to take the fight to your enemy and defeat them in battle.
Another option I would like is the ability to pillage your own Holdings. This would cause serious long lasting damage to your Holding, but be a last ditch defensive option for a severely outnumbered player.
Another option I would like is a button to prevent allied armies from attaching to my own army. This often happens and causes severe attrition problems. Most of the time I would rather my allies act independently anyway.
A big addition to combat I want is some basic form of ship combat. Naval battles happened during this period and I've been disappointed for a long time at their absence from the game. The Byzantine navy should be a significant source of their strength for example, along with Venice. This would also open the door for naval blockades and make playing a Republic much more interesting.
I also think there should be a way to force your enemy to tear down their castle or at least turn it into a ruin that has to be rebuilt. I'm pretty sure this happened historically during this period.
Also, like in EU4 there should be a summary screen of the losses you've suffered and inflicted at the end of a war. It's interesting stuff.
I also think that siege warfare could be made much more interesting with the option to build certain defenses (moats, wall mounted artillery, ditches, stakes, boiling oil, etc) in the Holding screen. Which would increase general defense and open the option for certain beneficial events to take place during a siege. For the attacker maybe there could be a technology (trebuchets, siege towers, etc) which increases general siege effectiveness and opens the option to experience their own beneficial events.
Another idea is for there to be more options beyond the general "Assault" during a siege. Maybe there could be more specific things like catapult/trebuchet barrage, tunneling under walls to collapse them, cutting off the water supply, filling in the moat, launching diseased corpses into the castle, digging ditches to advance on the walls, etc. The Stronghold series has all kinds of ideas on this stuff.
