I wonder how many sprites there will be in HoI3. The Titty Twister page said that they made 8 tactical bomber sprites, and are now working on the naval bombers. It seems we may getting back some of the wonderful sprite-diversity of HoI1. I hope they really allow multi-level sprites for all models this time around...

Now that naval attachments are done away and with the new division setup, I wonder if they will have a naming convention for for units which allows all this diversity to be represented in sprites and pictures ?

i.e.:

[naval_unit_type] [country]_[speedval]_[armourval]...

[land_unit type]_[country]_[brig1]_[brig2] .....

I don't think there will be more sprites except for the infantry sprites and possibly navy. I'm guessing they will make 8 different ones for:
-Germany
-USSR
-UK
-France
-Italy
-US
-Japan
-Generic

They should at least include Chinese sprites.

Screenshots already confirm navy and infantry aren't sprites, they're 3d models.

There are tanks too.

I hope they make cavalry too, and they allow other kind of divisions (mountain, militia, garrison, HQ, marine, para) to have different models, to be modded.

I'm hoping multilevel sprites (or at least the ability to have those) is in :)

It makes it easier and faster to be able to see what you're up against.

It'd be nice to be able to see that those fighters that I want to intercept are biplanes or jet fighters ;)

I hope they include a load of sprites with lots of eye candy. That is what the mass audience want. Sprites sell games - the better HOI3 sell - the more money for developing more Paradox games.

I never understood the limited number of sprites in HOI2. It just irritated too many players and reduced the attractiveness of the game to a large number of buyers.

I use counters, and as long as I get the possibility to use them I'm happy.

It's a 3D sprites world out there.

I'm just hoping they find a way to reconcile sprites with performance. Sprites were a major resource-hog in HOI2, and the more detailed they are the worse they may be.

I don't know about the resource hog, playing with Counters slows my game down just as much. I think the major issue is that the game "grows" constantly: more IC built, more and more units and once the war breaks out: more and more combat. Now, I think the EU3 engine can handle a bigger load then the old EU2 one, but EU3 has the advantage that the number of troops decreases after war, in HOI they all stay. Also, some better coding might solve some issues.

Anyway, from Twitter: "Of course, it is very important to have unique cavalry sprites for most nations."

I sense a hint of sarcasm, but at least I think we'll have cavalry sprites! Huzzah!

The sprites in HOI2 was a load on the system. The best way to improve the performance was to delete the sprites.

If I have understood it correctly, the 3D engine from EU3 does this in a different way that ensures good performance even with a lot of 3D sprites..
