have you ever compared mecator map with a globe or at least with an non mercator projection... have you ever seen the real distances of the world, lets say from kairo to johannesburg, or better from marocco to kairo? or as said before the unbelievable size of the pacific... from my point of especially for the WW2 area it matters, where distances like pacific were really a problem... especially for planes...
and also in africa or asia, the size of the sahara for example, nearly impossible to conquer...

on the other side, in africa, following correct shapes, so many more options are possible, more provinces for example... not for micro mgmt, but to simulate the giant efforts to control this continent...

for me, correct shapes and distances, accuracy matters, for strategy as well as for historic correctness as well as for atmospehre..
Yes, I do see your point if you are concerned with macro strategic moves, you want to see accurate distances . I suppose I just never think of it as game breaking for me to have a little inaccuracy. That's my personal thing/ but I am not that detail oriented in the game.

Didn't Stalin (in)famously plan offensives on a globe?

Back on topic, the problem is that we need a cylinder, so the pretty circularized maps here don't work: http://xkcd.com/977/ (Robinson 4 Life)

And Hobo-Dyer or Gall-Peters (which would troll cartographers epically, so let's use Hobo-Dyer and avoid rage :) ) might be good for EU or Victoria, but so much of HOI happens in Europe that it probably should be blown up a bit.

I say we go old-school with a Plate Caree'

If it would be globe, I expect an accurate representation of the stars and other heavenly bodies movement near Earth, and then I want the earth's albedo, and other atmospheric conditions including weathers represented accurately and in such details that I can recreate the famous image the Blue Marble, or see the Aurora Borealis, eclipses, etc at the right time. The Earth without needing any mention should also have high-resolution terrain textures that I can see Alexander Platz in 1939 when I zoomed in closely.

but then why do a globe at all if it turns back into a map once zoomed out further? Other than a desire to just have a globe for aesthetics, I just don't get the point of using ram or vram on a 3d globe. Not for this game anyway, but again definitely useful for cold war to modern or future era. That would be awesome.

The truth is there's no need to have this kind of switching - if you zoom down onto the globe in say, Google Maps, so that the BeNeLux countries occupy the whole screen, the world already appears to be fairly flat.

And this is really more about the basic game engine than the specific title - once they've got a game engine that can do it, then all world-games will feature it.

Like I said, it's not a huge feature, but it would be a definite improvement.

Everyone has his own focus on the game... that's absolutely fine :) I never played as japan or concetentrated as US on the pacific, because I did not like the inaccuracy there...

correct. the only thing I could imagine is an re-sizable mini map, highlighting the points of interest or points of action... something like that.. but even that is not really
necessary...
