I have three:

1. what do you do with your tech investment sliders early game. They start pretty much balanced, but it seems that some things are more important early for me (as England) - like, government tech for NIs and trade tech for colonization. How do you set them if your goal is colonization?

2. Alliance CB. the popup says 0 infamy, 200% prestige, and 50%(?) cost. The first two are self-explanatory. What does the last one mean? Also, then the list of goals seems to be generic - true? Some will apply sometimes and some will not? Once I got Genoa to pay reparations and gained some prestige, but while my troops were in the Med, France declared on me again. Jeez - I know you guys think this game is easy, but....

3. How do you excommunicate somebody? Do you have to be Papal controller? Then where would you go - to the Papal states or to the See? (I don't see any option to do this anywhere.)

1) Most people going for the "hardcore" approach will tell you to put everything into stab to +3 (whenever needed), then govt to 4, then trade to 7 and swap your NI to QftNW for a colonization focused game.

2) The cost mentioned is the amount of war score required in the peace deal to demand that item so for example, a core that would normally require 6 ws to force them to give up would only cost 3 ws with the alliance CB. This is a much more important consideration for things like annexation, subjugation, forced religion change, and the like as they have higher base war score requirements.

3) You have to be Papal controller, then on the diplomatic screen of each country the "excommunicate ruler" option may be available. It requires that your target be a Catholic monarchy, have lower relations with the pope, and can only be done so often (every 3 years maybe?) so it is unlikely that there will be many options to choose from at any given time.

I usually just put everything into trade when I want to rush colonization. You'll get government 4 before trade 7 anyway, so you might as well just go all in with trade to get there faster.
