I'm pretty much exciting with the release of Mass Transit next week. But as far as I noticed that all the new transportation options are geared towards moving people around and not freight. As of now, there's only three way freight can get into your city: trucks, trains and ships. That's about it. And even then trucks are used more often since once a ship or train arrives at it's destination it unloads all the goods and transferred to trucks for distribution and can congestion when it got too many even with the best traffic management you can try. So I'm thinking that this game should add any of the following in the near future:
Cargo planes
Cargo planes are fast. They can get goods in and out of the city faster than any other modes of freight transportation making perfect for use near commercial districts since they need to restock their products often. The downsides are you obviously need a lot of space in your city since you have to build a new airfield for it unless regular airports can handle cargo from the get go and planes have small carry capacity. But in case mass air cargo was in your vision then you need...
Cargo blimps
When I saw blimps in Mass Transit DLC I was hoping that these thing can also be used for cargo transport for this is where blimps shines the most. Blimps can carry more goods than cargo planes and the best part is that it requires an area just a little bigger than an average football/soccer field to use it. This makes it useful for that small hamlet near the edge of the map or that bustling downtown in your city. It is however a bit slower.
Cargo Trams
Yes, trams are used to transport freight as well. It can't carry as many goods as a freight train but it can carry more goods than 10 trucks/delivery vans combined. Since it uses tram lines it is useful in places that is too tight for regular freight trains. The idea was that the cargo tram stops at freight stations/ports, take their load there and then transport it to the industrial/commercial center. Industries and stores near a cargo tram stop may not need to use trucks at all as the tram transports goods directly to them. All they had to do is to cart/forklift them back to their respective places. Cargo trams however requires some planning since stops has to be placed strategically for maximum usage.
