Not in HoI2 (it's a separate, independent branch of the BB line). I also doubt it would be separate in HoI3, because a super heavy battleship is just a battleship with big guns and a lot of armor, so it would probably still end up being a BB.

In HoI the superheavy BB was all the way at the end, the advanced BB, which was unrealistic. You couldn't research and build the damn thing until the war was over! I know that the HoI3 research will be a throwback to HoI, but I do hope that they keep the original SHBB researchable early on.

Well, given the setup of the technologies in HoI2 and the fact that Paradox is most certainly aware of the existence of Yamato and Musashi (they are in the 1944 scenario as SHBBs), I am certain that won't be a problem.

BTW, my best guesses for 3 new types of ships are -

1) Submarine tender
2) Oiler/supply ship
3) Landing ship tender/dedicated transport for amphibious landings (this one is iffy, since this could be conflated with marine techs as in HoI2)

Id like to see CVLs ability to bring everything into firing range removed

I'm hoping CVLs are in fact a type of carrier--by chosing different techs you can build either Fleet Carriers (big airwings, fast, good protection, etc. but 3-4 year build time) or a CVL (about 1/2 the airwing, slower, little armor/armament, but cheap and builds in 2 years).

There should be ways for SAGs to occassionally close with carriers, thru surprise, weather, occassional dumb luck, but having a CVL in your SAG should not be one of them.

Why not? A single CVL could bring more planes to scout than a whole SAG fleet. And it could help fight off the airwings of Carriers distracting them and preventing them from finding the SAG.

I agree that even a tenth of the power they have in HoI2 would be overpowered, but I can still think of a great deal of things CVLs can assist a SAG with when it comes to helping them find and engage enemy fleets.

But at the same time, trying to balance the different guns is going to be tought. They would need to give the human player a real reason to choose 37mm guns over 50mm guns for a tank, otherwise you will always see tanks with the biggest guns possible no matter what. . .
IC Days.

The cost for the 50 mm weapon doesn't have to be huge. Militia only cost 200 IC-Days. If 50 MM costs even 100 more IC-days that means you can have 2 50-mm divisions or 2 37 mm Divisions + a militia division.

A militia division doesn't actually fight well. At all. But it would soak up damage that would otherwise go to the tanks. So a country that has 5 extra manpower is probably better off with 37 mm guns.

A country that has limited manpower, and extra IC, OTOH, should go with the best.

Transports and escorts, since they seem to be seperate units now :)

Numerous options:

Refuelling/revictualling ships like Altmark (to increase the range of raiders and subs)

Disguised surface raiders (like Penguin)

Monitors

Special Landing and Assault ships

Make Pocket Battleships a wholly seperate tech tree (as they don't really fit anywhere else)

Flotillas of Fast Attack craft (MAS boats, E-Boats and so on)

Armed Merchant Cruisers

The list of possibilities for our missing classes is actually quite broad.

Did they say 3 new ship types in the dev diary or something? I must have missed it.

I'd say CVE and Landing Crafts. For the third one an armed merchant ship would be interesting. It could possibly represent both the British escort types and the German raiders. The german auxiliary raiders made generally much better account for theselves than the more famous (overpropagandanized) capital ship surface raiders. A PT boat style unit would be interesting as well, even if they generally prowed themselves to be much worse torp platforms than DDs, by missing all the time.

IMO, the tender/support types are better left to doctorines than Landing Crafts.

Hmm, I think one possibility that wasn't yet mentioned are MACs, or Merchant Aircraft Carriers.

though i am not exactly sure how the tech "tree" will work in HoI3, the latest Dev Diary indicated that ships would be modular in nature, so having a Pocket Battleship "tree" of its own seems redundant if we are really supposed to make decisions on hull, armament, armor, detection, etc. I'm imagining more of a Hull Tree, or a Main Gun Tree than a Destroyer Tree.

Though i could be wrong.

Lets guess:

Pocket Battelships (although this one can be part of battlecruisers or BBs line)

Assault Transports

Commerce Raiders (would be nice to have them not because it was important from strategic meaning of the war but because Allies will have to keep trade and convoy routes secured with cruisers).

Supply Ships to increase operational range of other vessels.
