just been watching the WoN video and noticed the "canals" , so in theory is it possible to put those on the major rivers in burma etc and have them spawn/despawn at certain times of year and make them non-passable to people but boat-able ?

What is WoN?
I don't think it is possible right now with the commands/engine we have.
The engine currently loads a single file that says where the rivers are on the graphical map.
The 'under the hood' river map is loaded from a .xls file I believe and can't be changed aswell, atleast not mid-game.

Might be Wealth of Nations for EUIV? In that case it should be the same engine as HoI's iirc.

Not sure if this is the best thread, but water barriers need a serious overhaul for HOI4. At that moment it doesn't matter if a river is a little stream or one of the truly massive rivers, they have the same effect on combat and movement.

I'd suggest that there should be 3 classes of river:
the current one being for large rivers that don't reach epic proportions
minor rivers with half the current penalties (which would include most of the rivers in eastern France and the low countries)
major rivers with effects like that for crossing narrow straits (this would probably be limited to the Danube & Volga in Europe)

The straits between islands also need to be looked at. Some of them are many kilometres of open ocean which units are not getting across without naval transports.

In regards to monsoon rivers - I'd say there should be an increased penalty for trying to cross a river based on the amount of mud on the other side. Maybe 100% mud doubles the river crossing penalty.
