I have just bought a new monitor (20 inch Samsung 206BW) with native resolution of 1680x1050 - now the map seems pretty stretched. Can I change this setting to improve performance ?

tried it out, didn't work !

has this been confirmed to work for somebody ?

I follow the instructions and I launch the new exe file and then I start a new game in the game menu and the thing crashes ... the game menu is not in the correct resolution either,

It could be that Lord Ederon's hack is for a different version of the exe then you are running. I believe I tried this out about a year ago myself but grew tired of the unofficial hack making the game crash at least once or twice when playing.
Did you try run the game in windowed mode after patching it with Lord Ederon's hack?

Change your shortcut on your desktop (or create one) with the following setting:
"<path to your hoi installation>\HoI2.exe" WINDOWED

I guess this will become a real issue if Paradox don't take different resolutions into account when releasing future titles.

about that resolution thingy ... I was thinking that Paradox brings honour to their intro movie - an artifact from the past ...

For resolution hacks other than 1280x1024 you have to create 'gfx/load_high.bmp' with appropriate size (1680x1050 in your case Spruce). But I didn't hear from anyone running that resolution. Mybe windowed would be better try for you.

where do I have to make that file ?

and how do I make windowed mode ? I created a shortcut to {"C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Doomsday\Hoi2.exe" WINDOWED} but that doesn't seem to work - the game crashes after the paradox intro screen.

You either resize existing 'gfx/load_1024.bmp' or create new bmp from scratch.

You need to set desktop color depth to 16bit prior starting game in a window. That's probably why it failed it initialize.

back to the resizing of that .bmp file - how exactly does that work ? I would like to try out because now either the image is awfully stretched or it is to small (windowed mode).

Open it in some graphic editor (like Photoshop, or Paint) and resize it to your size. It may be stretched, but who cares.

I don't understand why a customer has to pay so many euro's (HOI2, DD, ARMA) just to find out that when he replaces his old monitor, the game isn't working like it should. I mean, HOI2DD is not a retro game from 20 years ago !

Isn't there any official Paradox support for the money I payed ?

So if you went and bought a monitor with a native resolution higher than what the game supports then that is your choice. Nothing we can do to help you. I would suggest you play in Window mode using 16 bit colors.

wow that's an honest answer, but I'm afraid not the one I was waiting for ...

Well the good news is the ne game engine Paradox uses for its games supports multiple resolutions. This was the engine used in EU3.

Use Window Mode though even though its not supported it works fine and should solve your problem.

I have an Alienware laptop with a native resolution of 1920X1280. Up until the latest new games - LOTRO, UFO Extraterestrials, and Armageddon I have not had a problem running at the rez with any games. These three games were causing me to get a black screen and a shutdown of the computer (I still get some black flashes on screen at times) However when I run my laptop at 1280X1024 32bit color then I never get shutdowns (still get the flashes once in a while though)

One other note - Nvidia has not provided an updated driver for the 7900 Go Nvidia notebook cards for almost two years now..... I am thinking this one is video resolution related to the new game graphics.
