If I set Mongol Invasions to random with Horse Lords enabled but no Reaper's Due, how does the invasion work?

I mean, most of Mongolia is already on the map. So, does a leader spawn in with troops and start unifying the steppe? Does it invade from the edge of the map? Does it randomly give troops to a powerful Khan already in the steppe?

Does it care what the political situation is on the steppe when it fires? I don't want to be on the cusp of forming the Mongol Empire and then some two-bit charlatan shows up to steal my glory.

Under normal circumstances, with Horse Lords, if the Mongol Empire don't exist by 1220 (aka all mongol tribes unified under one Great Khan) Genghis Khan (or one of his sons) will apear with large amount of event troops an proceeds to unify the mongols and them then the events will continue as usual...

So if you already have the Mongol Empire... you will be fine, or should be fine :)

So Reaper's Due enabled or not has no effect on this?

It might affect the amount of event troops he gets. Because his late game stacks are balanced for exactly that, late game.

I too randomed both Aztecs and Mongols. Aztecs have arrived in 825 of all times but thankfully I am operating in Persia.

Also, Black Death and other epidemics might hopefully eradicate his entire family, though that is unlikely.

The Mongols, once they arrive in 1220 or so, will arrive with their typical murderdeathstacks of around 70,000-100,000 (as far as I know in numbers); they will be Nomadic instead of tribal like they used to be, which means they'll refuse to fracture unless a faction does what it does best. This is because Nomad succession works akin to a Merchant Republic, and they will not lose titles through Gavelkind. However, a character with the greatest_of_khans character flag will generally have Loyalist councilors in their Kurultai (Council) if you also have Conclave.

As I understand it, they will spawn in and declare a invasion war for for the kingdom of Mongolia on whoever owns the province of Khanghai, which of course they will win (barring player shenanigans) and start expanding from there.

The key element of this is the "Become Khan of Khans" decision.
If no-one has been able to make this decision by 1220, Gengis Khan will spawn with his troops.

If the player or an AI character manages to make this decision before 1220, he is basically considered Gengis Khan himself, and the event that spawns Gengis Khan will be turned off permanently.
