Mongol invasion game over makes no sense

Started as khangai in 1100 something. Was doing well against qocho and other hordes. I knew an invasion was on the horizon though. They came with their 100k deathstack saying they wanted to unite the clans... ok, sounds good to me... but game over. What?

And heres an even bigger what... i reloaded and formed the khanate of mongolia, which i had neglected to do. War over instantly as the deathstack leader became unlanded... and then he joins my court.
