I noticed that other rulers don't go into minus with the gold, it just stops on 0. And they can be at war forever because they don't lose gold beyond 0.

The AI is not affected by money loss in War's only human player, its to stop human player going on a rampage etc, which imo its a stupid way of doing things as human player losses Honor let alone troops so, but thats the main reason, imo you shouldnt have to pay anything until after a war because if the troops wernt alive then you wouldnt have to pay them. Or the less men return to claim thier fighting pay the less youd have to pay out, also 1 gold was alot in them day's that could pay off around 50 men or more lol.

The payment of troops is abstracted in the game, but soldiers then weren't stupid they needed to be paid upfront. :) at least partly.

And the troopmaintenance is not just the payment of the troops but also the money you need to spent on supplies/food and so on.

The AI can't go into debt, that is to help the AI, cause else it would be to easy for a human player, the AI just isn't smart enough.

The AI isn't that rich... i remember having vassals who held 4-5 provinces or such, and they had a -0 or less income... even with no scutage at all

They had standing armies.
