Japan

Yet another great session for the Japanese Co-Prosperity Sphere.
After initial setbacks in Florida, The IJA and it's allies (mainly Brazil and Italy later on) pushed further out of Florida, reaching out for Biloxi in the west and Virginia in the north. Washington is only 600 kms away.

After a series of heavy convoy losses the situation seems encouraging, since the gulf is almost blocked and Axis air superiority, thanks to Japanese and especially to german interceptors. Running from the mighty Japanese army, many troops found themselves dead thanks to a rain of steel from above.

On sea, one further major battle was won. A big combined BB/CV fleet, including 3 CVs and 3 BBs got sunk by the IJN, with no losses on the japanese side. the Soryu found itself aflame, though, and only barely escaped ravaging US bombing fleets.

King Jorian of Canadia was also defeated on sea by superioir Japanese forces. Most parts of Canadian navy were sunk or set aflamd. Canada is out of the game, the IJN is the undisputed naval super power.

Current projections suggest that with the ongoing success of Axis forces in America that the allies are ready to fall. The IJA has been on steady advance, and paired with Brazilian and Italian forces plus the security from above by germany victory is almost assured.

Hirohito will look forward to the next sessions, as they will be the most decisive in Monday game 6.

Scandinavia

The first three-quarters of the session saw little activity from either the defending Scandinavian forces, or the Soviet aggressors. The Scandinavian government spent most of the session in expectation - and preparation for -a counterattack by the Red Army which it reasoned would be desperate to retake its losses in the previous session. With the help of her allies, Scandinavia hardened its defences on the Finnish front.

The reinforcement proved to be wise, when in the last quarter, the Soviets again took the offensive, making a bid to wipe peaceful Scandinavia from the world map. A coordinated Soviet attack along the entire north Finnish front was met by stubborn resistance from the crack troops of the elite "Narvik front", who although by now a considerable distance from Narvik, continue to be proud to bear the title of one of their most famous victories.
In the mean time, a joint Scandinavian-German counterattack succeeded in actually pushing the Soviets back beyond their start line. Petsamo fell in the north, and in the South, a Scandinavian force defeated the Soviet-Finnish troops defending Oulu, pushing for the first time into the heart of Finland itself.

Nevertheless, reinforcements did not arrive in time, and the Scandinavian gains were soon lost, and the front restabilised in its original stalemate position. However, the Scandinavian government responded with jubilation at yet another example of the mighty Goliath being brought to bear by the forces of the poor, innocent David.

The Soviet government - purturbed by its near defeat in Finland - responded by shipping tanks to the region, but fresh axis reinforcements arrived shortly thereafter, negating the attempt by the neo-Marxist imperialists to prepare new ways to enslave the battle-torn axis bastion of the north.

Meanwhile in the Atlantic, still reeling at his defeat in Trondheim in the previous session, and desperate to provide himself with a safer base to which he would be able to evacuate his government before the inevitable future occupation of his country by the Japanese/axis units pushing up from Florida, King Canute of Canada (as he is known in the majority of the civilised, axis world) launched a cowardly attack on the Polar Bears defending Iceland. Several were slaughtered, but put up a brave fight against the Canadian divisions until finally forced to surrender when the Canadians brought up cruisers and machine guns to support the invasion. In an official press statement, the Scandinavian government greeted the news with disinterest, having lost 0 natural resources, 0 supplies, 0 money and 0 industry as a result of the operation. Scandinavian leader, Vidkun Quisling, also blew a very large raspberry in the national parliament, announcing: "that's for the Canadians."

Nationalist Spain

During the hot summer, spanish forces regrouped for new offensives, as France was eliminated and Afrika secured. In North America IJA was making very slow gains, and it was decided to help the hard pressed Japanese divisions by making distracting manouvres. First the Azores was retaken, and soon after Bermuda was once again in spanish hands. Although the navy had lost its precious CA's and BB's, they hadn't much to fear as IJN and Kriegsmarine ruled the waves in these waters - which was proved by the decisive victory by IJA over the puny USN. 3 Divisions was sent to US mainland, and spanish TP's helped some 60.000 Brazilians get to Savanah. Forces on the eastern front was digged in, and only saw action in late August were they repelled a Soviet attack. The airforce didn't fly many missions either in this area, as the Soviets didn't want to risk their biplanes over enemy territory...

After the USN losts its carriers, the spanish high command now proposed a daring plan, wereby Newfoundland would by liberated. If this attack succeeded, the entire Canadian coast would be in jeopardy. Franco agreed, and soon 30.000 men were shipped north. Newfoundland was taken without resistance, and Britain once again lost some valuable industrial complexes. (Actually only 1 but what ever... :p). Intelligence reports soon arrived with the information that Canada had no troops defending their coastal provinces. Based on this fact, Franco made the fatal decision to try and take a province with the 3 divisions from Newfoundland . For days this looked like a good call, but unfortunately the Canadian reinforcments arrived a mere 4 hours before the province could be secured. This caused some heavy fighting, and the amphibious landing had to be called off. In a foolish counter-attack that followed on Newfoundland, the Canadians troops were easily defeated. Now the spanish navy saw its opportunity to really hurt the enemy, and the Canadian convoy was intercepted. 2 hostile TP's were sunk, and it is known that at least 1 contained a division.

spain10.JPG

After this naval battle, the remains of USN was sent out to decimate our belowed spanish navy. They succeeded in catching the Spanish armada, but then the world was suddenly freezed right in this scary moment....
Next session will decide if Spain is still a naval power or not - cant wait :)

Don't be sad. ;) I meant it as harmless advice, but maybe I'm just too bound to my standards. "Smart" quoting is good for three reasons:
  • there is close connection between quoted part of the post and reply to it, making it easier for readers to identify discussed thing
  • it doesn't flood forums with unnecessary texts and images
  • it saves database space, server resources in general and bandwith too

The interesting event for the UK this time was the return of the Antipodean expeditionary force. This was an army that had orginally been sent to Singapore; was diverted to Australia; fought a long campaign on both sides of that continent; evacuated in some peril; spent some time seeking refuge amongst the islands of the South Atlantic; fought another campaign up and down West Africa; evacuated that too; ran the gauntlet of the North Atlantic; and then returned home to Liverpol with some relief and much celebration. The senior commanders, Brooke and Montgomery, have been knighted for their brave service to the Crown.

Japan

What a session for combined Eurasian forces!

Despite some setbacks in the West, the combined northern forces were on steady advance. At the end of the session, Washington DC was reached, yet not captured. It remained a stronghold for half a session.
Dozens of retreating divisions have been obliterated, which was part of the success in the session. In the end, a bold combined invasion of New York and Newark took place. Original planes were that Brazilians land there first, but alas my Troops came 2 hrs early and made the whole place Japanese.

The US put up quite a fight however, and especially in the west the front provinces changed sides quite often. However, in the end IJA combined forces prevailed. Though sometimes outnumbered and generally to soft (there are no motorized or armored forces at all in the combined forces in the US.).

One of the two pinnacles of this session was Operation Freckled Thunder. Germany finally unleashed hell from his 4 dozens of V1 within 2 days, totally destroying UKs economy, leaving it at 39 base IC, losing 3 tech teams. It did not fully recover till the end, partially due to continued v1/2 bombing of UK cities.
The second pinnacle of this session was clearly the establishment of the Confederate States of America, CSA in short. Japan holds no interest in the southeastern US, and only in the industrial heartland.

With the first TP made Brazil changed herself into an empire. First stop, the Carribean with the invasion of British, Canadian and US islands. All went well and Brazil's ambition went even further. With 8 vichy TPs free for use an invasion of Canada was decided. So the invasion started until by chance a Canadian DD level 1 engaged our TP's, it was laughable but nonetheless scared the Vichy Admiral and he retreated against orders eventhough he would of suceeded in invasion and left unharmed, instead he was retreating from ravaging naval bombers.

After the defeat plans were still considered to invade Canada and a joint Spanish invasion south of Quebec began. 7 divisions in all, a rather large force were on the shores only to be pinned down by hundreds of British bombers. With the seas now clogged and air power in enemy hands, the disbanding of the troops proceeded but surely they will return in a matter of months.

Not dettered by the failures, Brazil planned an invasion of the US if only to distract forces away from the Japanese. So when a lone destroyer scouted the area and found no sign of bombers or navy and New York not garrisoned, other powers became interested and Spanish and Japanese forces were dispatched and landed in the New York, Newark areas. The Brazilians stormed in with troops and faced the same bombers as before. But they resisted this time and the only counterattack in Newark was beat off. Now its only time before the forces reunite.

Scandinavia

"...and the crowd is chanting now, the atmosphere is absolutely electric. I'm sure many people will have a story to tell their grandchildren about this incredible day.
The Scandinavian diplomat has stepped up. He is saying a few words, difficult to make out at this distance, but the crowd seem to be enjoying it. The cheers are almost deafening!
And here comes the moment they have all been waiting for. He is slowly lowering the Hammer and Sickle, and...wow this is incredible...people are actually crying now.

The attendant is now folding the flag, and taking it away... Now I think I can...yes, I can just make it out...yes it's the Japanese flag. It is being unfurled. Ha ha ha ha...I just cannot believe this crowd! People are chanting and screaming. Amazing. Ha ha ha ha.

Ha ha ha ha ha.

...Yes, and here it goes, the flag is being raised. Ha ha ha. Wow.

WOW! Ha ha ha ha ha. WOW! Ha ha ha ha. I just can't believe it. Ha ha ha ha ha. They are going absolutely bezerk. This magnificent port city has surely never seen anything like this before! Amazing. Flowers are being thrown, people are singing, dancing, crying. Incredible! WOW. Ha ha ha. What more can I say? WOW!"

That was a transcript of a live report from Vladivostock, formerly part of the Soviet Union, after the handover by its Scandinavian conquerers to new Japanese Masters. Your reporter was Mr. Joseph E. Johnston of the Confederacy of the Free United States.
