That was a great session. I've been hanging on like grim death as Germany in the hope that something would turn up. Initially the session was quite quiet - winter brought a pleasant respite in the fighting as most of the other players focussed on the fighting in China.
Guderian made ready for his role as Germany's new mass-combat minister by leading two panzer divisions across the Belt to Malmo, while German marines made a Viking raid near Stockholm and forced their way ashore. These forces then linked up and advanced upon Stockholm, where Swedish troops fought bravely to protect the virtue of their women. But, at the third assault Stockholm fell and Sweden was puppeted. Swedish blonde au pairs will now been recruited to all corners of the Reich and, in this way, German population growth will be doubled!
The Soviet Union had been wary of further hard fighting with the Axis and pursued its own economic goals by seeking to add Persia to the Union. The UK reacted strongly to this threat to its vital Anglo-Iranian oil company and declared war upon the Soviets. (a sphere event in which Ederon chose the war option). The Soviets then reacted by making peace with the Axis! This restored the frontier to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact line in Poland while the Soviets got to keep all their gains in the Balkans: Rumania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Hungary.
The Allies recoiled in shock from this realignment but then responded with the bold stroke of puppeting Japan. This had the unexpected effect of giving control of the axis-held Japanese territory to the remaining member of the Axis and so Germany now found itself in control of most of China. A stalwart corps of Japanese troops even renounced their allegiance to the Emperor and vowed to fight on for the New World Order under General Honda.
The diplomatic map has now been radically redrawn and so we concluded the session to take stock of the new situation. With Japan now in the United Nations, the Allies VP total of 598 was way out in front of the other two alliances. But with both of those alliances now being at war with the UN rather than each other, maybe the military balance has shifted.
The date is now February 1944. This is uncharted terrtory for me and I wonder how this interesting alternate history will now play out. With the fluid new situation and fighting all over the globe, we could perhaps use some more players. Brazil, France and Communist China might all be worth playing now ...
