I open this thread in order to explain a little problem I have had with the game since release.
It's not a bug, it's not a glitch, it's not even a graphic issue. It's about a sound. Oh, just to make it clear : I'm french, so there's no mistake on my behalf here.

The file is ...\sound\characterview.wav, it's the ambient sound of mumbling you can hear when you go to the character sheet.
During this "loop", you can clearly hear two sentences in french, said by two women :

00:02 -> 00:04
Ils sont jolis ces vitraux.
("Those stained glasses are nice.")

00:08 -> 00:10
Moi, je trouve que la Vierge elle est... (*inaudible*)
(I find the Virgin to be...)

I can tell you that once I heard it, I COULDN'T UNHEAR IT :(.
This is terribly disturbing and distracting, and at the moment the only solution I found about it was to put the effect volume slider on "0", which removes a lot of the immersion.


So here I am, complaining about something only I can understand. Typical from a french guy, I must admit...

first is harder to hear, but i can confirm the second one, kind a strange to have only one comprehensive phrase in all that inaudible text block ... (and i am not even french -> so it is not a mishearing wich migth happen often for the motherlanguage)

couldn't you replace the sound file with another one, possible one containing no sound. Then you could have the other sound on.

Does this line refer to sunglasses? If it does then are you sure they are women talking?

But OT, I don't understand how it could be distracting. It is obviously refering to a stained glass window in a church, with the virgin Mary depicted.

Haha , i noticed it too ! Was not sure it was french first.

And i can't understand the end of the sentence with "la Vierge" . But i hear something a little different when the woman talk. I understand :

Moi j'ai rencontré la vierge et....

I find those funny. But really , i want to know what she is talking about the Virgin.

I experienced the same in CK1, when you move troops there was a sound file that played, and I swear on my life you can hear a british person at the end of it shout 'Oi c***', I kid you not.

I've been looking around the net for some crowd murmurs, but it's really hard to find anything that is not "polluted" with understandable sentences, exacerbated echoes, loud footsteps, and/or modern-days sounds.
If anyone has any lead on that matter, that would be GREATLY appreciated.

[edit] Just tried to see what it would give if the sound was reversed. It's terrible. Do not want.

It's barely audible and for the life of me I can't discern the first one, only a few words of the second one.

What is so disturbing about people discussing stained glass windows in a church?

maybe that they could actually be understood, which then probably makes them distracting?
I guess... at least that's what I could relate to (ie. hearing my native tongue in "background chatter" in decidedly non-native settings) :laugh:
or probably that the audio content is kind of non-sequitor vis-a-vis the character sheet?
Since I can't really understand the audio though and listen more to the BGM, it isn't distracting for me

Also, surely this is just one of the things you grow to love about the game? In the same way that I'm constantly quoting "voulome", "podromos" and "malista" to fellow ex-AoM players in fond remembrance of the little things about it?

On another note, I'd love to hear Warcraft 2 sounds play when you select/move troops and councillors... (work work work.; zug zug)
