HOI2 has greatly improved and the added scenario and cold war event is amazing. When is the modern era, like the after end of the cold war starting from the end of cold war until now and the invasion of Iraq by USA event will be introduced? I cant hardly wait to try the HOI3 with this new campaign and scenario! :rofl:

I like the idea of a "modern" HOI3. However I would say go forward a little bit in time from present day. Invent some new tech that basically eliminates the effectiveness of nukes. Machines that protect and clean radioactive materials out of the environment perhaps. This line of thought I believe would effectively eliminate the USA's dominace of the world in a "modern" war game environment. Thereby allowing new units and tech that would involve imagination and fun :p

i would love to see a a modern day game.
i agree that the modern asymetric warfare is very hard to model properly in games of HOIs scale.
still for such a game it would be best it would be best to assume that the main actors in international affairs are still nation-states (personally i think this is the case, but that is another story)
while i think the game should have an extended economy and state development side i think that many social and economic issues could be abstracted well enough.

the game could lift the historic straight-jacket that holds HOI together.
superpower II tried it and i think it was fun to play (although i gave it up as it never worked properly).
so to have the spII idea done on the paradox basis and professional programming would provide for great gameplay and fun especially in multiplayer.

just some ideas:
- a timespan from maybe 2000 to 2050
- generalisation of techs*
- a switch ABC-warfare on/off option for multiplayer

*such as main battle tank (generation)III - m1a2 abrams
when u research gen XII - name it yourself
(you get the picture)

A whole game made up entirely of WW1, never happened b4

I would suggesta game of 1900 till 1945. Or maybe later.

That way you can take it on yourself if there even will be a second world war. And if there is, which ocuntries will be the major players.

I wouldl ike to ee more control of the characters taking part in the government of countries though, getting osme detail about them so yuo can decide better what your countries goal is going to be.

One of the problems I see is that WWII basically happened (or the probability of it happening was increased) because of the nature of the peace treaties that ended WWI. What if Germany had not been so punished by the Allies at the end of WWI? What if Italy had got some more rewards in exchange for her help to the Allies? And so on. So, a realistic game should consider the possibility for Germany and Italy to be democracies in the '30s, thus reducing the chances for a global conflict.

This doesn't mean that the 30s-40s will not see wars: Japan vs. China and Russia and England, maybe, and that could spark a different chain of events leading to a different WWII - but I do not know if the engine would be able to manage a totally different flow of history.

Some kind of modern HoI ... that's what i'm waiting for. Especially for the period from the mid-60s until 1989/90. there is no such game or mod on the market and i think that the cold war offers a plenty of possibilitiys.

there are nato and warsaw pact, many many events and more then enough new techs like choppers, sam-systems, different sub-classes (SSN, SSGN, SSBM, ...), tanks and and and ... more then enough stuff for a cool game.
also the cold war-period offers a better background for spying, diplomacy or trade agreements (building mig's for china? selling sam-sites to france?). the possibility of changing divisions for let's say raw materials like in hoi is nice, but i think that there is more potential in this option

by the way: i always wanted to play through a fictional conflict between nato/warsaw pact. but on good old hoi-level and not within a real-time game such as the funny but unrealistic Red-Alert-Scenario :D

Not with downgraded nuke-effect - besides: no one can tell me that it is impossible to make a good cold-war-scenario only because there are nukes in this time period.

I'm sure that there is a possibility to avoid the "nuke-problem"

I always thought the Cold War period was interesting. Up until Desert Storm. That event kinda marginalized Russians as the Other Superpower. But nonetheless, there could be all sorts of proxy conflicts, alliances of convienence, propping up of corrupt regimes, etc. Sure maybe a little different engine would be needed, not an all-out war game engine.

The real crux of the Cold War was to win WITHOUT having too have a nukefest. The US outmanuvered the SU politically, militarily, and economically but war was still on the table. I have some ideas for DD but don't know if they are feasible with the current engine. Anywho my two cents. For what it's worth.

In my opnion, expanding the war to 2000 and including the techs there should be sufficient. I don't *THINK* that major terrorist and assymmetrical warfare began until the attacks of September 11 and the subsquent wars. And the extent that the guerilla fighting is modelled in HoI2 seems okay so far and should be able to carry up to 2000

A far more complex economic and diplomatic system is necessary for the Cold War. And the military system needs thorough revision to deal with small scale conflicts like Vietnam. If done properly, the new game would have as much in common with HOI2 as Victoria.

In HOI2 many people get bored during the peaceful years between '36 and '39. A Cold War game would basically extend this period to between '45 and '90.

For modern HOI, I'd replace divisions with brigades as the main unit. Division-sized formations are rarely used in their entirety, but are split up into separate brigades. There would have to be some changes to which units are included as well- I'd probably do it like this:
LAND UNITS
Infantry = Standard infantry (later models mechanised)
Cavalry = Mot. cavalry (recon units)
Mot. - gone
Mech Infantry- stays the same (stryker brigades etc.)
L. Arm- gone
Arm- Stays the same
Airborne/Marines/Mountain- stay the same
Garrison- gone
HQ/Militias- stay the same

AIR UNITS
Interceptor = Pure Air-defense fighter (F-15C, Rafale)
Fighter = Fighter-bomber (JSF, Typhoon)
Strat = Big bombers (B-52, etc, now very rare)
Tac- Standard attack planes (Mirage, Harrier, Jaguar)
Nav- Naval Patrol- Nimrod etc.
CAS= Low-speed attack planes (Warthog)
Trp= Air transport
Flying bomb- gone, maybe Predator drones
Rocket- ICBM
And you'd need air-tanker attachments

NAVY UNITS
BB- perhaps keep, for the Iowa class and arsenal ships
BC- Guided-missile cruiser
CA- Destroyer
CL- Frigate
DD- Patrol boats/Corvettes
CV- supercarrier (Nimitz/Charles de Gaulle)
CVL- STOVL small carrier (Invincible, Russian/European carriers)
SS- hunter-killer sub
SSN- SSBN
TP- assault ship. A brigade-style attachment for an air group.

You mean "fantasy" like HoI2??

Like Britain and India under Occupation and the Empire is still fighting? Or nuking 5 major Citys in Russia/USA/any Country and it's still far away from capitulation? ;)

It's o.k. for me if someone doesn't like the cold-war-scenario but don't tell me that it's impossible to design a good cold-war-game only because of "Fantasy", Nukes or Operation Desert Storm ...

Trouble is (and people don't seem to get this) Modern Warfare is so different that it might be impossible, or the product may come out stupid. Modern Warfare is more about Counter Insurgency than anything else. The actual fighting is always an easy victory for U.S. forces. There would be maybe 3-4 countries worth playing at all. The interface would have to be nearly 100% overhauled. Not only is that asking too much from P-Dox, it would be abandoning the last "good war" for a nuke fest.

A modern HOI3 should be based on Victoria instead. With a VERY complex diplomacy and trade system. So that you can fight like a Vietnamn scenario making your enemy waste valuable resources with out you actually doing any fighting. :wacko:

Wow haven't you guys played the modern Day Scenario, I believe its the best mod out there. they accomplished the Insurgency in Iraq. if a bunch of moders can make a well made modern time mod I'm pretty sure the developers of HOI can make a better one.

Going back in time is stupid. just play Victoria if you want to do that.
