itch on your back? scratch that

I get more enjoyment from scratching my balls actually. :)

The previous guy in charge of MDS used to calculate IC by taking the GDP and adjusting it so that the portion of the GDP contributed by the industrial sector contributes twice as much as the agricultural and service sectors. I think you should use that as a basis and then add significant efficiency bonuses and maluses from corruption levels, technology, war industry, peacetime, defence spending (with defence spending losing much of it's relevance in wartime) and such. It was reasonable, but not perfect. It is the best we had so far.

But why on earth are you using per capita GDP to calculate IC? You should use the total GDP of the country.

EDIT: If you find it difficult to adjust the resource values of provinces traditionally, perhaps you should use the 1999 levels of NWO2 for both IC and resources and then add a percentage of increase relative to GDP growth for the following years for everything.

Thanks for the advice. I have it all done and dusted now. I'm quite pleased with it and it wasn't the nightmare I imagined. I think it was the simple method I chose and the logical approach I took that eventually gave me the resulting numbers which were very agreeable.

All the numbers have been entered into the province.csv file. So 2 days work in total completed that task.

NWO, yeah thought of doing something exactly like that but when I went to run it, my copy of nwo had been corrupted (probably testing something much earlier..?) and because I was in a hurry (as usual) I had to choose... well I more likely probably got distracted by something totally other, and forgot about nwo in the meantime...

I don't see myself as "minding" MDS anymore. That was a few versions ago. When I think of what is in the last version and this version of this current mod, it has very little in common with the original MDS. Only the events are the same. Everything else, well 90% of it, is totally different.

The reason why I removed the previous version to the last posted version, was simply when I loaded it up, it LAGGED so badly, I couldn't bear to still have it "released".

I actually struggle to think of any one thing except events ... (ai, techs, unit pics, tech pics, units, backgrounds, skins,) ah yes the dreaded ministers and leaders are the same. So novapaddy'sMDS has very little in common with the hoi2 version.

A work in progress:

Regarding the revised version of MDS2, I and many others have no lag at all with it. IMO it actually runs better than DH and most other mods, except for a small waiting time on the end of each day. The lag you experience is not the mod's fault but something else, possibly the OS (Windows 8 64 bit is one not so unlikely cause). Or are you talking about the old version with the division/brigade based system? That one did indeed have some lag issues, while definitely playable.

EDIT: If you don't mind receiving a lot of critique I would like to see the new IC levels you have concluded.

Will be the fix for new IC levels published soon? I'm constantly applying your fixes to most recent Novappady's MDS2 scenario, and it is getting better and better. This is probably last big thing missing, so if it'd be out soon, I'd be very happy. With such solid version, I could even try to do AAR with it. New things will be then mostly storyline stuff that you mentioned, right? Not that I'd dislike your further work, I fully support your plans, I just don't want to start a project with new and new improved versions coming out, making my game outdated.

What about some battlescenarios first, though? Those would be fun.

And with the exam period over, I'll start getting back to speed this week.

Well those are going to be war scenarios, better than battle scenarios?

EDIT: I mean, if you wish to continue playing after the war finishes, you will be able to, if not, choose another war.

I meant proper battlescenarios. You know, those in which you only use a portion of the map and handle only the military.

Yeah, I hear ye!

My basic premise was to use the mod as a base and concentrate on having specific wars. I don't know if a battlescenario would fit into a modern war? Since if the USA is at war, the chances of NATO also being at war are high, and if CHC is at war, the chances of RUS, IND and BRA also being at war are probably as high? I mean, localised conflicts seem to be a thing of the past. Aren't we really in a WW1 type situation, where it is all the inter-connected alliances, which when war comes, will make it so much bigger?

A battlescenario, I'd have to create something new and specific. Whereas if I just use the mod in 2003, I can concentrate on the war, and not have to create a whole new "thing" first?

Quite the opposite. The likelihood in today's world of any global war or even war between internationally recognized countries, except in a few cases involving minor countries with a poor reputation (such as Libya, Georgia or Iraq - or the bloodless war between Sudan and Chad a few years ago) was lower than it had ever been before in history during the 90 and early 21st century. Although we it is possible we are gradually moving towards a more dangerous world now - while there are no signs that we will keep moving to that direction or that it wouldn't stop moving there at some point. Today's world is definitely one of regional and local conflicts, however rarely limited to national borders. The will of participating in war is also lower than it has ever been before, with alliances meaning less than ever before as most NATO countries for example feel no real need to fully commit to conflicts that doesn't threaten or affect them severely or directly, generally contributing only token assets. NATO has turned into more of a symbolical organisation than a real alliance - it would probably require a full-scale nuclear strike by Russia for all NATO members and most partners of it to commit everything they can to the defence of NATO members.

These are some possible battlescenarios that could be considered plausible within the timeframe of 2003-2020.

- Russia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia vs Georgia 2008 and possibly a fictional continuation in the near future.
- Chinese-Japanese naval and air conflict over the disputed Senkaku-Daioyu islands, possibly with some American aid given to Japan. The goal of the Japanese side would be to avoid a full-scale war by balancing success with good diplomacy simulated by chains of events and decisions and convince the Americans to pressure the Chinese to back down or commit sizable enough forces to do so.
- Fictional Venezuelan-Colombian war over the FARC and ideological issues. Most likely in the Chavez era?
- Libyan Civil War - with or without the historical situation of western air and covert support for the rebels
- Fictional follow-up to the Libyan Civil War involving a breakup of the Libyan Civil War into different regional factions.
- Syrian Civil War. Fictional or possible Western and possibly Israeli or Turkish intervention a possibility, but never all three at the same time - Western being by far the most likely with Israel providing mainly air cover, intel, bases and logistical and technical support.
- Fictional Chinese-Taiwanese war that doesn't involve direct American aid - would be most interesting in the early years before the Chinese start to obtain a significant technological edge and superior air force to the Taiwanese.
- Fictional US Bush-era invasion of Iran or Syria.
- Historical US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 (may not be 2003 but should still be doable).
- Fictional new Indo-Pakistani war, possibly with Pakistan propped up by China and India facing increased internal instability from extremism and secessionist groups (they already have that to an alarming extent, although so does Pakistan) - western powers have difficulties picking any side and may stay neutral.
- Internal conflicts in Africa, such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Mali_conflict
- Fictional Sudanese refusal of South Sudanese independence resulting in war, with South Sudan most likely receiving support from the outside world, from the African Union in particular.
- Proper historical representation of the Second Congo War.
- Historical war in Somalia, involving secessionist states like Somaliland, Puntland as well as insurgent groups, Ethiopia, nominal African Union and US covert involvement and the outside world-backed Somalian Federal government.

I imagine smaller conflicts like Northern Mali will be among the easiest to make and could be a good area for experimenting, if you or anyone else is up for it. I guess it should mostly be event-driven and decision-driven.

One cool thing you can do with Battle Scenarios is have a scenario where you control production and technology as well as your military. The only one I know of like that is the Spanish Civil War in Vanilla HOI2, but it is possible.

If you really wanted you could have an "Iran-Iraq War 2.0" where both sides could start at war and start producing things.

Sprites are enabled in the launcher and the counters still work, but still no sprites. Also I had no problem with previous versions of the game. Again, I coppied and merged the unites folder in the db folder, replaced existing files and what have you.

?

The download only contains the sprites and the spr files. You have to just uncompress the folder and copy the whole "units" folder into your C:\DH_RC3\Mods\novapaddysMDS\gfx\map folder.

It has nothing to do with the units folder in the db folder.

@Samilou: Food for thought.

Been busy: I know it needs adjusting.

I wouldn't call it DEFCON though. Putting aside the fact it's a US thing, DEFCON 5 would be achieved at 0 mobilisation, which isn't quite the case in reality. Whether there is mandatory military service has quite an influence on the slider, more than readiness of war.

Side note: You could use Globalist and Nationalist instead of Open/Closed Society, just as it was in MDS, but I presume the text got lost somewhere.

I do agree with CocoBZ about Defcon seeing as it deals with mobilization id see it as more a Volunteer versus Conscript army type

But have you considered renaming the Free market/Central Planning slider to Capitalism/Socialism seeing as thoose have been the two main economic theories that dominated the post WW2 world
