I think removing regular infantry is a bad decision. U.S. Army is the most modern army in the world, so it techs should be handled like Germany in HoI (they have discovered many). So if U.S. is the most advanced we should think what is the most undeveloped country. Most 3rd world countries still use equipments from 60's or 70's or even from 50's. Surely *most* world armies are still mainly foot infantry.

What I suggest is to attach avitation brigade to division to make it airmobile. Today's airmobile divisions are not like paratroop divisions in WWII. Airmobile division like 101st is *fast* moving infantry division supported by attack & transport choppers. They just switched horses & trucks to choppers. ;)

What we need:

Divisions:

militia (3rd world army)
infantry division (regular foot)
mot. infantry (wheeled infantry, trucks)
mech. infantry (tracked infantry, APCs)
Armor (tanks + APCs)

Brigades:

By adding brigades we can make more modern units (example attack and transport choppers). I'm not sure can we change brigades name, hopefully... We could remove/change some old brigades.

Avitation (transport + attack choppers)
- Attack/defend is heavily depends about helicopter tech
- Fast moving infantry, rivers etc. gives no bonus to defender
- Could only be attached to mountain/elite/light divisions (?)
- very expensive to build and supply!

Combat Avitation (attack choppers)
- No transporters for every units / no speed bonus
- Attack/defend is heavily depends about helicopter tech
- very expensive to build and supply

Armor Brigade (tank brigades to give more punch)
- Gives more hard / soft / defend
- Much like artillery brigade

Conclusion:

From this point of view we can examine todays U.S. Army:

1st Armored division
- Armor division
- No attached brigades (IRL engineer batallion, like *every* divison have)

1st Cavalry division
- Armor division
- Attached Combat Avitation brigade

82nd Airborne division
- Paratroop division
- Attached Avitation brigade (in game terms, this could not be added, coz' choppers could not be paradropped)
- Worlds only *division* able to really make a jump

101st Airborne division
- Old paratroop division, but today airmobile and not able to make a paradrop
- In game term this could be infantry or mountain division attached by Avitation brigade

10th Mountain division
- Mountain division
- Attached avitation brigade

5 infantry division
- Mech divisions

And maybe a two dozen or so reserve (mech) divisions...

Some notes: IRL only 101st is truly airmobile, but 82nd and 10th have their own smaller avitation brigades. Only 101st can be lifted to air in one time. In game terms, I don't see any problem to add same avitation brigade to all. HoI is a strategic scope game and it does not simulate every batallion or brigade.

Just my two cent...

I agree with the Partisan idea. I mean, look at Mogadiciu(sp?), or that war in Yugoslavia. They should be highly effective in Jungles, Mountains, and also places with high Infrastructure(if that's possible), to represent cities. The only thing partisans are truly weak against is Heavy Armor, because I don't really think an RPG can knock out an Abrahams.

This is all true. I think we should have partisans, too.

Partisans are, as far as I know, not organized into divisions, brigades or even regiments. Usually they are company size, even smaller maybe, harldy ever battalion size units.

This is because they are not "front line troops", and thus they really don't have a chance against regular army units. They can cut supply routes, communications, blow up bridges and make a few strikes here and there, but apart from that they really don't fare well against regular troops.

Maybe give them superior defence ability to represent the fact that it takes long to root them out from a province?

Yes, I think their use will be limited only to Naval Bombers at first... But you can add some ekranoplane tech that will allow building different types of ekranoplanes, can't you?

What about this:

Militia - Garrison?
Infantry - Conscripts/Reservist/Nat. Guard (line inf for some countries)
Motorized - Light Infantry (mot)
Mechanized - Mech Infantry
Cavalry - Air Cavalry Inf
Marine - Marine and Navy Commando(subclass)
Mountain - Mountain and Army Commando(subclass) and/or guerrilla
Para - Paratroopers
Tanks - Tanks

Also could be a tech like this:
Mountain Formations:
Add mountain class, desactivate Guerrilla formations

Guerrilla Formations:
Add guerrilla clas (insted mountain class, in the same place) , desactivate Mountaion formations

the guerrilla and mountain will use same techs, so the guerrilla should be drasticly weak, much less org. (anyway the countries that use guerrilla should not have advanced techs)

Keep in mind that the FARCs have some (at least!) 10.000 mens. Combined with other guerrilla movements there are more than 20.000 guerrilla/paramilitar troops in Colombia.
Another example is Sudan. I dont think that goverment paramilitars qualify as infantry, so they are more close to be guerrilla.

just some ideas

That’s kind of what I was thinking.

Infantry - motorized infantry, troops in trucks and light armor
Motorized - Airmobile
Mechanized - modern IFV mounted infantry
Tank – Tank
Cavalry—Export Armor, a working idea for weaker nations
Militia - Partisans/Guerillas
Marines - Marines
Mountain - light infantry and specalist troops, various skill types level
Paratroopers - Paratroopers

Tanks

So when will be decided the units classes?

Mayby the tanks should be:

American made
0- M48A1 -obsolete or disabled for the USA
1- M48A2 -same

2- M60A1
3- M60A3

4- M1A1
5- M1A2

Rusian made
0- T-54 - obsolete
1- T-55 - obsolete

2- T-62
3- T-72

4- T-80
5- T-90

British made
0- Centurion MkIII -obsolete
1- Centurion MkV -obsolete

2- Centurion MkV/105
3- Chieftain

4- Challenger I
5- Challenger II

German made
0- USA - obsolete
1- USA - obsolete

2- MBT/Pz70
3- Leopard 1

4- Leopard 2A4
5- Leopard 2A5

more or less, to made them comparables (M48A1 = T54 = Centurion 3, etc)
plus I think that must be light tanks (or at least should be included as MBT)

Example: AMX-13/105, Scimitar, etc

Unit classes are really just conceptional right now with little actual work done on them but what you have above is about right. I’d also like to see something similar for the mechanized infantry like this.

US
0-- M113
1-- M2 Bradley
2-- M2A3 Bradley

UK
0-- FV 432
1-- Warror
2-- Warrior 2000

Russia
0-- BTR 152
1-- BMP 1/BMP 2
2-- BMP 3
