ModDir - How does it work?

1. I may have posted this before, can't remember if I did or just considered it. If so I apologize for multiple whinging.

2. Could we possibly get stickied a Dummy's Guide to Moddir? I know the mods use it, and it involves setting up a file within the existing directory and setting up a separate shortcut - but that's about all I remember.

There was a post with the directions earlier but I went through all this forum and 18 pages of the main forum without my memory twigging on it.

The main HOI directory is- /c/programs/paradox/hearts of iron2 ...pretty much...

You drop your mod file into this section and then make a shortcut (copy the standard one) but right click on your copy and go to properties and add the name of your mod file after where it says /c/programs/paradox/hearts of iron2.exe

eg- /c/programs/paradox/hearts of iron.2exeMYMOD

Basically this tells the game to run MYMOD instead of the regular game.

The game will read anything in your mod file but read anything you have not changed from the vanilla files...

pretty much as E-prize states.

make a copy of the shortcut. Go in to properties and change target filed from...

"C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2\HoI2.exe"

to

"C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2\HoI2.exe" MYMOD (note that the folder name is outside the quotes and there is a space)

where Mymod is the name of the folder containing all your scenario files. Your scenario files act as a seperate HoI2 folder (so inside that file you have a gfx folder, db folder etc as if it was a seperate HoI2 installation), the game reads those files before it reads the HoI2 vanilla stuff.

I very much appreciate the quick help on this. Now I'll have to decide which mods I want to try first. Is it something that might be added to the FAQs? (Assuming, of course, that it's not already there o )

Don't forget that the file must exist in vanilla first. You can't add files in a mod, you can only replace them.
