This may be a silly question, and in that case forgive me for asking it. But here goes:

How does moddir work? I've searched through this forum for an explanation, but it's seems like it's supposed to be so simple that nobody bothers to talk about it.

I finally found an explanation in the EU2wiki, but frankly I don't understand it. I understand that I should put all my modded files in a separate directory under the HOI2 root catalogue - but then what? How do I tell the program where to start looking for the data files?

I'm probably not getting it because it's much simpler than I could possibly imagine. Anyhow, I would be very grateful if somebody could enlighten me.

Sorry I meant to reply to this yesterday but I forgot.

On your HoI2 shortcut add the name of the folder to the end of the Target box. Then it should run the contents of the folder. I think that should be it and you've grasped the basics.

It is very simple.

You have to copy the shortcut to HOI2 and then right click on it and go to the target line and add the name of your mod file to the end of the line-

eg- "C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2\HoI2.exe" yourmod

This tells the game to run your mod from your files instead of the vanilla files.

If you have already added a 'yourmod' folder to this location C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2

...then you are ready to go. (assuming you have built the mod folder correctly)

Just tried making a moddir and it worked easier than I expected, except for one thing... Why can't the game load my AI in the moddir? :wacko:

For anything to work in moddir, it needs to have a copy in the vanilla files, so if you have ENG_ai_yourmod in your moddir, it must be in your vanilla ai file too.

Also, Im not sure the game will automatically load your mod AI's. I made AI events to fire on the first day to switch to my mod AI. I havent properly looked into it but I think that is the only way, short of removing all the AI files (but I wouldnt advise that)

Maybe if I put the ai in the original path then... It's not like they replace anything so it shouldn't hurt, but then it's not kept within the moddir anymore... aww well.

The problem is like Enterprise described, there must be a file with the same name in the vanilla ai folder for it to work.

I ended up creating empty files with xxx_1936.ai names for 75 country tags that didn't have one named that in vanilla. I place those files in the vanilla ai directory and that allows the ones I create in the mod's ai directory to load.

These empty ai files are available at the RandRoad page as StubAIFiles.zip.
